Surrealism BrainPop
LG: I will be able to explain the key components of
the Surrealist movement and analyze a surreal
painting.
Create a Circle Map with “Surrealism” in the middle
Write down what you learn about this movement,
the artists, and style.
Surrealism
Relationship between the real world,
imagination, and subconscious mind
Dreamlike quality
People, backgrounds,
and objects may be
painted in a realistic style
but are arranged in an
unrealistic way
Interest in psychology
Solution to find new
ways to portray
the world around them
1920s and 1930s
rejected everyday world
and focused on creating
a reality inside the artist’s
mind
Believed the
subconscious could be
more honest
Art History Activity
Choose a Surreal artwork from the following slides.
Add a slide to this Google Presentation: Google
Presentation Surrealism
Type your name and period in the header of your slide.
Copy and Paste the image you chose on one side
Answer the following questions on the other side
What do you see? (subject, colors, patterns, textures, lines,
shapes, etc.)
What is realistic? What is unrealistic?
What do you think the painting is about? (what is the artist trying
to say or express?)
Why did you choose this artwork?
Your Project
LG: I will be able to create a surrealist painting that conveys a personal mood, meaning, expression, or story.
Think about dreams (night or daydreams) you have had. This is a great starting point to brainstorm ideas for a surreal painting. Think about what was realistic and what was unrealistic about your dream. Think about how you felt in your dream.
What do you want to express or say through your artwork? Is it a happy dream? Scary? Does it express a deeper feeling?
Is it a place or a person or an object?
What parts are realistic?
What parts are unrealistic?
What if you don’t remember
your dreams?
Try thinking of objects or things that are in places
that they do not belong:
an alligator on an airplane
a piano that is in the form of a hill
Begin sketching some of your ideas to choose your
best composition.
Think about your foreground, middle ground, and
background.
Your intention/meaning/story should be clear and
your composition should be strong.

If you haven’t had art before, you may need to do
some work to catch up on these things we covered
last year!
Painting Techniques
LG: I will be able to use proper paint techniques,
color mixing, and a color harmony.
To do this, I will demonstrate proper paint
techniques, which you will apply with the use of a
color wheel to experiment with color harmonies and
gradations.
