It is now a common phenomenon that before entering any job and passing any degree you have to face a viva voce. It does not matter from which school have you passed, number of degrees holding, the experience you have or whom you know; if you fail to do the interview successfully, you will not get the job.

So we can say that some planning and actions are needed to win in interview . Now we will see how we face the viva voce successfully.

Home working : it may looks odd to hear it but it has no alternatives. You have to get a good idea about the particulars of the company such as, co. strategy, products , mission ,vision etc. But don’t forget to go through the major key points of your study area.

Check the interviewers : if you have some idea about the interviewers then it will be helpful for you to deal with them.

Interview style: different organization have different interview style as some focus on behavioral question, some on case studies, some on test general knowledge questions. It will be helpful for you if you know their style.

Connect with people who interviewed before and company’s employees. know about the job: Get a minimum idea about the job you are

interviewing for. Prepare answer for some common questions: Tell me about yourself. tell me about you background and accomplishment what are your strength ? Weakness ? what interests you about our company? why company will hire you?

Practice : After all practice makes a man perfect.

Stimulate an interview scenario with your friends , where he interviews you. Self interview before mirror is a good rehearsal.

Resume : Take excess resume with you even the interviewer has one. Please don’t fold it.

Clothing: Employers reject improperly dressed candidates. Generally , formal office wear will work right. Things that should be avoided;

* No sports jacket for men. * No pantsuits for women. * Dress for your boss’s job. * You can’t be too conservative. * Extremes in hair, clothes, make-up and

Stress minimization: the company wants to hire someone who is self assured and can deal with pressure. Always maintain a relaxed attitude. To maintain it, you need to know that your career is not riding on a single interview.

Take it easy. Viva board is not a detention center.

Keep in mind that every human being has some limitations.

Read your own resume- be sure that you don’t have to look into your resume to recall details during the interview.

Timing : arrive at least 15 minutes early for your appointment

During the interview session:Introduction: Greetings ,example : "Good morning, I am…" Maintain good eye contact during the interview. Maintain high energy level. Take seat by taking permission. Back straight. No smoking.

Note: It is to your advantage if a subject of mutual interest arises, but do not fake knowledge. Be yourself. Dignity, confidence, and self-respect are of great importance.

The Site: Employer's office: If there is more than one

chair, take the one closest to the side of the interviewer’s desk. The desk is the barrier between you and the interviewer.

Style Eye contact! Look directly at the interviewer. Listen! Give the person the opportunity to

talk. Do not touch anything on the interviewer's desk. Do not move around with anything you have, such as a pen, tie, etc.

Relax and be confident (do deep breathing to relax).

Be enthusiastic-use your eyes, hands, and voice inflection to show support

Sample interview questions and their answers:

Ques: How would you describe yourself?Ans: You must prepare yourself earlier what you tell about yourself in the interview board. You should describe attributes that enhances suitability for the position. Try to add something that is not described in the CV.

Ques: What are your long-term goals?Ans: Long-term goals must fit with the

organization’s objectives. For example if you apply for a sales manager’s post, you can say your long-term goals are to bring you the top marketing position by proving your worth.

Ques: Why did you leave your last job?Ans: The possible answers are: Job was not as it was described to meOrganization changed its focus/goals Organization could not effectively use my

talents/skills For a better career opportunity

Note: Don’t show negative impressions about your previous job as it may be known to the interviewer.

Ques:Why do you want this job?Ans: This job suits my career objectives. I want

this job because I think this job offers me more responsibility, better opportunity.

Note: Never tell it is closer to my home or the gym.

Ques: What are your strengths?Ans:– You should highlight accomplishments and

experiences that relate to the position for which you are applying.

Ques: What are your weakenesses?Ans: . Don’t mention anything that could make the

interviewer question your ability to do the job, for example “I am always late for everything.”

Instead, discuss a weakness that could also be strength such as “I am a workaholic!”

“I am sometimes impatient, which drives me to work excessively.”

“If I start on a project, I sometimes forget to go to lunch.”

Ques: Describe some times when you were not very satisfied or pleased with your performance. What did you do about it?

Ans: I scored poor marks in Business calculas test,which made me unhappy. I was not going to let it continue. I went to my course teacher and sought some suggestions. My course teacher helped me out incredibly. My grades soon improved and I was able to overcome the situation.

QUES:“Why is your GPA not higher?” ANS: Don’t whine or make excuses

Your response should enhance your value as an employeeYou were very involved with sports,

extracurriculars that may have hurt your grades, but made you more well-rounded

You held a job while in school, which hurt your grades but gave you great experience

Ques:Describe a challenging work issue you had to face, and how you dealt with it?

Ans: Get a list of challenging work you were issued earlier. Now find something in your past that highlights a skill, experience or situation that might occur or be needed going forward.

Ques: How do you handle conflict? Ans: “I know everything cannot run smoothly at work all the

time. When there is a conflict I usually try to determine the source of the problem and see if it can be solved. This might involve other members of the work team discussing the problem and offering possible solutions. I would then try to pick the solution which appears to have the best outcome and put it into action.”

Ques: In what way do you think you can contribute to our company?

Ans: Preparing to answer this question requires a 2-step preparation: assessing your skills and researching the needs of the company. Considering the job opening, what are the skills needed? Make a list of the requisite skills and then list concrete examples of your possession of the skill. This question, by the way is just another version of “why should we hire you?”

back on your accomplishments to date: “I started out in my profession as a junior clerk while I completed my graduation. Soon after 2 years I got promotion and became senior executive.

Listen to/memorize the comments of the interviewers what they are said during the viva.

If your performance is not satisfied of the interviewers then you will find out what things they are desired.

Mind it expectations are varies from man to man, person to person.

Identifying the mistakes: It is said that “problem identification means problem half sold”. After completing viva the mistakes that occurred should be identified. And it is ensured that this errors do not happen in the future.

Development: after identifying the problems try to minimize the mistakes. And try to develop myself by practicing. There is a proverb “practice makes a man perfect”.

Send thank- you notes to everyone who interviewed you. This helps put you in their top of mind.

And finally wait for the results.

Down below are the reasons to why employers rejects job applicants

1) Poor personal appearance.

2) Inability to express self clearly – poor voice, diction, grammar.

3) Lack of interest and enthusiasm – passive, indifferent.

4) Lack of tact, maturity, vitality, courtesy, and social understanding.

5) Little sense of humor.

6) Lack of knowledge of field specialization.

7) Lack of planning for career – no purpose and goals.

8) Overbearing, overaggressive, conceited, superiority complex, a “know it all”
