W A IT IN G FOR R E N E W A L .Living, as men live on earth, is trying
to the spiritual as well as to the physical nature of us all. I t wears away w hat we call the soul as well as the body of us. With a greater or less degree of activity we are all striving for something. W e are reaching, as it were, to grasp some object—working to accomplish purposes, and as we reach and w ork we are conscious of a w asting process which not only reduces, for the nonce, bodily strength, but which also fritters down the soul which animates the body. There
such a thing as spiritual exhaustion, and it is produced by the repeated disappointments concerning ourselves and others, by the unfulfilled expectations, by the degradation of much of the seeming- h unavoidable pushing and jostling along . e dusty road we travel—ail of which go 'n to make the m ixture we so truly,-and Wt so superficially, call our life.
In the physical body, as there is wast- so also there is repair. Food and
arink and kind na tu re’s sweet restorer, called sometimes the twin of death, make Z°°d bodily losses from the friction of
life’s uneasy way. And the need of som ething in the region of m an’s spiritual existence analagous to the restoration of vigor which comes daily in our bodies is a need keenly felt—more so at some times than at others—by every one who realizes that virtue has gone out of us in spiritual ways.
Now, recognition of the necessity for spiritual renewal of men is nothing new. I t is, rather, so old and so general a tru th that it may be regarded as a b irth m ark of hum anity— one of the signs of the strange natu re God has given us— the confession of a common hum an need, embodied in the experience of the race from time untold. M en’s spirits are exercised even to weariness— they strive, even to exhaustion,— they are wasted and m ust be replenished, or renewed, else they die. Dejection and despondency will inevitably prevail in m en’s hearts to their destruction, unless there is some source of com fort and of joy where relief, in renewal, may be sought and found. Hence, at different periods of the w orld’s history and in different stages of education we find men leaning now upon one support, and then upon another. W e find them now glorying in the possession of independent and self- reliant character, and then cultivating a spirit of stoical indifference to the harshness and angularity of the w o rld ; we find them looking from the trials and m isfortunes of existence to the consolations of philosophy—plunging into the follies of life to drown the memory of its cares, and after all tacitly confessing that they need som ething more sustaining than these— som ething so high as to be above change and decay, and yet so low as to be everywhere available—someth ing upon which the self-reliant character may rest when broken down at last and to which the stoic may turn when the m ask of indifference is torn away and sensitive hum anity, palpitating with hopes and fears, is disclosed underneath.
W hat is the keeping of Lent but a recognition bv the Church of this universal need of spiritual reinforcem ent? W e need Help. I t is on its way to usward. Som ething is always coming to our help, and we are always to exoect it and to wait for it. The spiritual man will get new strength of spirit whenever he lingers, waiting, where it i s . . W hen he finds himself weak or worn he does not
lie down and give up,—he stands and waits. H e waits because the spirit of his life survives by reason of the eternal tru th , that issuing from the source of life above, there proceeds over to this world of ours stream s of spiritual vitality abundant for the filling of all the empty or half-depleted souls of men. D iscouragements come, som etim es; the m ystery of life falls blindingly as n ight falls on the earth. But altho’ it may be night, there is a com ing day. A ltho’ there may be dark places to walk in, there is going to be light enough in which to see. W e take the world as it is, and we cherish no fantastic notions of help for it. W eary wrongs bend shoulders intended to be s tra ig h t; lips speak awry, shaped for fair u tterances; hearts w ear cloaks destined to be unmuffl'ed and f re e ; struggles with heredity and habit dash hopes hard to be renewed,— these, and more, cause many to doubt their strength ever to walk upright, or even to creep onw ard to the end. But this doubt awaits cancellation in the memory of the w orld’s H elp— the Desire of all nations—the Jesus of Christianity, the Spirit of Com fort for the whole world of straying, lost, bruised, pathetic, strug gling, H um anity.
A nd so we w ait for the Lord, nor strive to take Him, nor H is help, by violence. “They that w ait on H im ,” declared a spiritual genius of long ago, “ shall renew their s tre n g th ; they shall feather them selves an ew ; they shall run and not be w eary and they shall walk and not faint.” —A dapted from article in the Poughkeepsie Chronicle.

A gain the Carnival comes in Lent. Last year we published a letter from a layman on the subject. I t was suggested by the w riter o f the letter that the Carnival be set each year for the week before Lent. T hat it is entirely foreign to the m eaning of Carnival to have one in Lent is evident to those who know the origin of the term , and we deeply regret that there cannot be some way to respect the convictions of a t least a respectable minority. .
Some years ago the Sunday law was changed in these Islands chiefly for the benefit of small O riental shop-keepers, as it turned out. “T ourists,” it was said and written, “will consider this a ‘jay

tow n’ if a man can’t buy this and that on Sunday.” The point is th is : people seemed to be greatly stirred by the idea tha t anyone should think H onolulu a “jay tow n.” W e wonder how m any tou rists have been heard saying, “ W hat a queer idea—having a Carnival in L e n t! D on’t people here know tha t there is such a season?” W e have heard quite a num ber say these very words.
In places w here we have lived on the M ainland, it would have been out of the question to have a Carnival in Lent. People used to take into consideration the times and the seasons when they talked of a Carnival.
T he reason tha t heretofore Lent has been so little appreciated here has been, we believe, largely because the Roman Church in H aw aii being a Mission, it is largely dispensed from the Lenten fast. This was probably wise in the old days of poi and fish, and few amusements, but today, with the devotion to pleasure, with children who expect to go three or four nights a week to a show, it would be a blessing all round if self-denial was practiced and if the Rom an Catholic Church would set forth a set of rules for Lenten observance, as Rom an Bishops do on the M ainland.
As it is, Lent makes no impression on the religious life of the City. I f it were used as it m ight be for self-denial and prayer, we should have a revival, far more real than that which any traveling evangelist could w ork up and carry on. As it is year by year in H onolulu with Church people, Lent is wasted opportunity. . *o+o+o+o+<>

W e read accounts of a m ost ex traordinary kind of the meetings held by Billy Sunday in Philadelphia. One hesitates to criticize efforts m ade by anyone when the purpose is good and when good is accomplished. B ut it certainly is kindly and fair to ask this question : “Did Jesus Christ, ou r g reat Exam ple, speak in the m anner which this man does?” '
W e read H is sermon on the M ount. Is th a t such as would arouse excitement and g reat emotion? Did our Lord distru s t the curiosity of m ultitudes thronging to hear H im or did H e not? W ere the methods which H e used such as would set an example for w hat we read of Billy Sunday, o r were they not? Did H e take H is disciples apart and instruct them , did H e w ith the individual or in the home quietly appeal to the best in the hum an heart, or did H e depend for the efficiency of H is work upon swaying masses of men by impassioned- speech? W ere the parables of the Sow er or the
Prodigal Son such as to arouse intense excitem ent ?
I t is necessary tha t we ask ourselves these questions in view of the way in which men are being carried away by carefully-prepared methods designed for the arousal of the emotions. I t is all very well to say : “Look at the numbers this man tu rns to God.” In the Bible we are w arned against pu tting any trust in numbers. W e may learn much from history. Excitem ent of the kind Billy Sunday arouses, is not new. In the eighteenth century Jonathan E dw ards and George W hitefield were the leaders of a movement which swept over the Colonies. T he language used by these men was as fierce as tha t used by Sunday. “P agans,” “dumb dogs,” “without piety” were mild term s with them. One of the companions of W hitefield in Boston, whom the Rev. T im othy Cutler describes as a “m onster, im pudent and noisy, told the people that they were “ D am n’d, dam n’d, dam n’d,” and he adds, “This charm ed them and they wallowed in the snow night and day to hear him. I t would be impossible to describe the scenes of confusion and disturbance occasioned by him .” This great awakening was m arked by the m ost extraordinary physical phenomena such as contortions and spasms. One w riter describes W hitefield as “half educated, impetuous, self- consciou,s im patient of law, but w ith a burning eloquence as g rea t as was ever given to m ortal m an.” H is efforts were contrasted w ith the “cold m orality of the Church,” to the la tte r’s g reat discredit. In tha t day Churchm en (and I use the term in its hsitorical sense as members of the Anglican Com munion) either openly condemned the methods of the man or waited for the reaction which was sure to come.

ce. i h religion and m orals ever reached long the old New England stock, though thing's were worse in the South. The days of Christianity were thought tobe numbered.
This is the case always with such methods. It devises m achinery to arouse the emotions. “ It makes little of sacraments and empties them of grace,” as one writer has said.
On the other hand stands the old and tried way. “This has for its starting point not the adult, but the child. I t assumes it to be the child of God. I t leans on Christian nurture. I t looks on the Church as a hospitable home in which all have a right. I t is d istrustful of spiritual cataclysm. I t thinks that religious life to be most healthy which is the least conscious.”
It is this for which we stand and it always wins in the long run. W e may be abused as hinderers or ungodly and cold. But the lessons we get from history tell us what is the law of God in spiritual life. Portions of this country which trusted most in these emotional revivals, which were burned over by them, are the most indifferent to religion, until writers, not of our way, speak of these rural districts as practically pagan. It was the only kind of religious life which the people knew, and when emotion failed them they .lapsed into indifference. I t is the same everywhere.
Here is a lesson from Rome. Am idst all such movements this g reat Church, as does ours, with the experience of the ages and its knowledge of hum an nature, goes on in its work and continues to Slow and holds the masses as no P ro testant denominations do.

waiians. This has been told me by men now living, the sons of M issionaries.
The secret o f the steady grow th of this Church in the U nited States has been its adherence to the principles on which it has always carried on its work. Does it believe in revivals? Y es; but it does not tru st in emotions aroused by carefully-organized m achinery and by every method possible as evidences of religion. Psychical disturbance is m ost mysterious and m ay lead men and women to grasp Gospel tru ths, but .it is often disastrous in its effects. W e have lived in communities in which the g rea t m ajority had been carried away by such movements, and in which religious life had become dead because there had been no real foundation no r any real upbuilding in spiritual life.
W e w rite this, because as a religious leader we m ust speak the tru th , and we try to speak it in love. W e doubt no one’s sincerity, but the word of God in the Bible and in hum an history tells us plainly tha t sudden and violent emotional religion is a dangerous1 experim ent and in the end will result in harm . There are many who say: “But he does some people good.” G ranted ; but we are on dangerous ground when we argue that the end justifies the means.
W e have heard men and women who believe that the doctrine which he preaches is false, who yrit say, “But he reaches people we do no t.” Falsehood may do good, but are we justified in using it or tolerating it? Yet many who believe tha t Billy Sunday’s idea of God is horribly false and his doctrine of heaven and hell and salvation false to tru th , yet say, “ But he does good to thousands.” W e hold that false ideas in the end always do harm.
T here are many in this city who would repudiate with scorn the ideas of God and salvation which Billy Sunday preaches so forcibly, m any who believe them utterly contradictory to tru th and harm ful to spiritual life, yet would advocate his coming because “he would do good to m any.” W e cannot understand the position of such.
W hat then? H as a revival no place in a historic Catholic Church ? Certainly
it has. Parochial Missions are most helpful, and we have tried hard to get a good m issioner here. So fa r we have failed. W hen Archdeacon W ebber was here ten years ago, he certainly did good.

B ut the Church has provided a yearly time for a revival of spiritual life, and that is the Lenten season. I f the readers of this article will heed the call of the Church and go step by step w ith Jesus Christ tow ards Jerusalem during the g reat Forty Days, there will be a revival which will go down deep to the springs of spiritual life. W ill you hear her call ? W ill you read your Bible daily? W ill you try to make your prayers m ore real ?

W ill you abstain from pleasures and amusements which are at other times lawful and even commendable, in order that your spiritual life may have a chance to assert itself? W ill you attend services regularly? W ill you come to the Holy Communion weekly in penitence and faith? W ill you try to cleanse your heart o f sin? W ill you examine yourself and see w hat your relations are with your fellow men ?
I f you will do these things, then there will be a real revival of spiritual life compared with which an arousing of emotions is poor and but a passing feeling. B rethren, let us make this Lent a time of real revival for each one of us, and then the Church will show its power through you.

The Episcopal Church has always been to the fore in m atters of social service. H e r g rea t parishes have long been centers of a diversified w ork for the unlift of man.
In 1910 at Cincinnati the General Convention appointed a joint committee on Social Service, and this commission was re-appointed in 1913. I t is interesting to note w hat this commission has accomplished.
I t has employed, since 1911, an executive secretary, who has traveled 30,000 miles, holding conferences with parochial and diocesan social service agencies. I t has since 1912 m aintained an office in the Church Missions House, New York, and distributed a dozen different publications to leaders and workers.
I t has been instrum ental in increasing Diocesan Social Service Commissions from 15 to 76.
I t has stim ulated throughout the country in community service, and published program s fo r social service work.
I t a rranged a Social Service week in connection w ith the last General Convention, including a mass m eeting and a series of conferences.
I t has cooperated with the Commission appointed by the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, and with
the social agencies of o ther communions through this body.
I t is cooperated with Church societies —the G irls’ Friendly Society, the Church Association for the advancem ent of the interests of labor, and others.
I t has advocated reform legislation of the S tate and Nation, cooperating with other agencies.
I t has appointed sub-committees to report on social reform , such as prison labor, w orkingm en’s compensation, etc.
I t has had a traveling exhibit which has been on view in m any Diocesan Conventions and Parish meetings.
I t has emphasized the need of education for social service in the Sunday Schools, Theological Seminaries, and Parishes.
This and other w ork has been admirably perform ed. F o r the carry ing on of the program the Commission needs $10,000 a year.
A m ong the members of the Commission are not only prom inent Bishops and Clergy, including the R t. Rev. W alter T. Sum ner, D. D., the newly consecrated Bishop of O regon, but there are many laymen whose names are fam iliar to all the reading public of the U nited States.

I t certainly Is a rem arkable recognition of the w ork of St. Luke’s Hospital, connected with the Mission of this Church in Japan, to have the E m peror give tow ards its building fund, the sum of 50,000 Yen. This is the first time the E m peror has made a personal g ift to a Christian institution.
The announcem ent of the Im perial g ift to this Church institution was made at a luncheon attended by 50 of the most prom inent persons in Tokyo, including the Am erican Am bassador, who made a speech.
I t is notable also, tha t in announcing the gift, Count O kum a said tha t the E m peror was personally desirous of solidifying the international understanding be tween the U nited States and Japan.
This has been followed by other Jap anese gifts of a substantial character.

D uring that brief period they are to be given, among other privileges, tha t of cooperating with Churchm en elsewhere in replenishing the treasury of the C hurch’s g reat Missionary organization, and; providing the means for more vigorously prosecuting its aggressive w ork both at home and abroad. I t goes w ithout saying that thev are all interested in this work. There is not, alas, the same degree of interest on the part of all, but it is true that all are interested. N ot one tha t does not wish the w ork of Missions w ell; not one that would not feel a sense of shame should failure overtake the enterprise inaugurated in the Name, and at the command, of the M aster. There has been a steady increase in the amounts raised by various Sunday Schools from ear to year, and, until last year, there
has been a commendable increase in the sum total sent from our. District.
But our best has been fa r below what mkht properly have been expected of us. For want of personal in terest on the part of some, who have failed to see in this effort a distinct means of grace, enthusiasm was allowed to cool, plans for active work were not made or encouraged, opportunities w ere lost and the precious days of L ent allowed to drift by without much being accomplished.
But all that was in the past. W e cannot remedy the record now. There is, however, the present, the “Today,” the Lent of 1915, in which we can do something to retrieve past deficiencies. And the appeal was never m ore earnest, nor the Master’s command m ore loving than in this eventful year of grace, 1915.
Shall we not give both the heed they are entitled to ? Shall we not, for this once at least, try harder to come up to the full measure of our privilege and duty? May we not have the cooperation, involving whatever it may of personal sacrifice, of each and every one, young and old? Will not those who have heretofore left the children to m anage for themselves, this season generously take a kindly interest in teaching and guiding them in their w ork th a t they may Jave a record offering to bring to the United Service” on E aster D ay? Several new Bishops have been consecrated lately. A t St. M ark ’s Cathedral, Salt Lake City, on December 16th, the Rev. George H unting was consecrated Bishop of Nevada, and the Rev. Paul Jones, Bishop of U tah to succeed the late Bishop Spalding.
A t St. Jam es Church, W ilm ington, N orth Carolina, on January 6th, the Rev. Thom as Campbell D arst was consecrated Bishop of E ast Carolina to succeed the late Bishop S trange.
The Rev. H iram R ichard H ulse was consecrated on January 18th in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York. A large num ber of Bishops, Priests and lay people were present at this first consecration of a Bishop in this Cathedral.
On January 25th, St. P au l’s Day, the V ery Rev. Paul M atthews, Dean of the Cathedral at Faribault, M innesota, was consecrated Bishop o f ' New Jersey. Bishop M atthews m arried a Miss P rocter, a daughter of the late W m. A. P rocter of Cincinnati.
The Rev. H erm an Page was consecrated Bishop of the M issionary District of Spokane on January 28th at St. P au l’s Church, Chicago.
The Rev. W alter Taylor Sum ner, one of the m ost widely known men in the U nited States in all that relates to social service, was consecrated Bishop of O regon at the C athedral in Chicago.

T he Board of Missions of the Distric t has recently held three interesting and im portant meetings. The Bishop related to them in detail the changes he proposed to make, and his action was
heartily confirmed and the necessary money provided.
The B oard also, by resolution, endorsed the Bishop’s proposal to purchase a certain piece of land for Church and School purposes.
The Board also took action which we hope will result in the employment of a General M issionary for new work.
The B oard resolved to hold regular monthly m eetings hereafter.

There is about $2,000.00 short of the contract price in the hands of the treasurer. '

They have done exceedingly well in gathering together $2,600.00, and Church people should be glad to help them to carry out their plan. W hile they do not wish their names to be known, yet we can assure them of the gratefu l appreciation of the ir kindness and generosity in this and other m atters connected with the w ork and the Church.

It is ra ther late to make mention of the death of R ear A dm iral A lfred Thayer Mahan, U. S. N ., but in reading notices concerning him it is probable that few read about his Church life. H e was recognized as the best inform ed man upon Naval history and N aval w arfare, but he found time always for active, earnest w ork in the Church. Few laymen have w ritten m ore upon ecclesiastical and devotional subjects, than he has.
He was a m ember of the General Convention. In the year 1900 he was elected to the Board of Missions, and he served upon the B oard continuously until its reorganization in 1910. H is wide experience in foreign affairs made him a most useful member, particularly on the committees relating to China and Japan.
Sometimes the assertion is made that men who travel widely and observe keenly, are skeptical in regard to the value of missionary enterprise. Adm iral M ahan was one of the m any whose lives have absolutely disproved such a statement.
In the New Y ork Churchman, to which he was a frequent contributor, there have appeared several articles relating to this great Churchman, as well as great Naval Officer, and these articles testify from personal knowledge, the deep, spiritual and consecrated life of the late Adm iral.
Admiral Stockton writes of his intimate friend Admiral M ahan, as fo llow s:
“He was an author, a thinker, an historian and a naval statesm an, but in it
all and interwoven throughout was the earnest, sincere and devout Christian.
“H e was a loyal C hurchm an; he believed, of course, in the expansion of C hrist’s K ingdom, and was in sympathy with that extension at home, in the parish, and the diocese, and abroad, on this continent and all others of the world. H e found in his P rayer Book and his Bible his daily religious sustenance.
“ H e loved his P rayer Book not only for w hat it contained, but also for its rich associations.
“Those who like him followed the sea and have followed with it the P rayer Book, on shore and afloat, in cathedral and chapel, in varied climates and latitudes, not only find a vivifying of home associations, but a richness and depth in its prayers and responses that restricted areas and dull repetitions do not give.-
“A m utual friend told me tha t he visited M ahan’s cabin— he was then afloat —and found his book shelves full of religious and theological books, of which he was the constant reader.
“A dm iral M ahan was not only a Christian gentlem an and a devout Churchman, but belonged to the highest and most unselfish type of Am erican citizenship. H e loved his country and advocated for her a naval strength, not from a narrow professional view, but in order that she m ight be protected in her unity and greatness both in the present and for the fu ture.”

House, and P riest in charge of the M ission, and his resignation also, from his various positions in the M issionary D istrict.
Some time ago Canon Potw ine told the Bishop that he considered it his duty to leave on account of his family. M rs. Pqtw ine needs a colder climate and has found tha t a change to different conditions has been of g rea t benefit to her.
L ast year when Canon Potw ine left on a furlough, the Bishop then expressed in the Chronicle his appreciation of the services of Ganon Potwine, not only in connection with St. E lizabeth’s, bu t as a member of the Cathedral Chapter, of the Council of Advice, and the Board of Missions, E xam ining Chaplain, and other positions o f corffidence and trust, held under appointm ent of the Bishop o r by election of Convocation.
I t is only necessary to state here that the loss will not only be to the work, but that it will be a personal loss to the Bishop. Canon Potw ine was fam iliar with Canon law and Church prqcedure in Am erican Dioceses, and was m ost helpful in getting the Convocation and Church committees to understand the mode of procedure and the spirit prevailing in the Am erican Church. H e has been secretary of the Convocation, and his services in that capacity have been most valuable.
But beyond all his official services, there has been the value of his personal character and devotion, which have been known and read of all men. W e can only express our hope and prayer that in the parish of Santa Rosa, California, which he has accepted, that his labors will be abundantly blessed. M y dear B ishop:— It is w ith sincere regre t tha t I noiw advise you of my p u rpose to tender my resignation as Superintendent of St. E lizabeth’s H ouse and my position as priest-in-charge of this M ission, appointm ents with which you honored me nearly eleven years ago. As I purpose asking for a letter dimissory to the Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento at the same time, this resignation will also carry with it form al relinquishm ent of the Canonry at St. A ndrew ’s Cathedral, the resignation of the Secretaryship of the D istrict and other offices with which the Convocation and you as its president fu rther honored me.
I have already advised you of the reasons for my retirem ents from a field where I had fully expected to end my days of active m inistry and where my heart’s affections have been deeply and earnestly enlisted. A later and more careful review of those reasons leaves me under the conviction tha t duty to my family justifies the course I am taking, in severing ties here which have become most dear to me.
A ppreciating from, long and intim ate association with the C hurch’s w ork here the difficulties and discouragem ents peculiar to this field and your need of loyal and devoted workers, I shall not cease to pray that God will raise up others to hold up your hands and to bless you in all that you undertake.

T he R t. Rev. John M cKim, M issionary Bishop of Tokyo, arrived in H onolulu on the Tenyo M aru on February 16. Bishop and M rs. M cKim intend to stay a few weeks m Honolulu. W ith the Bishop and wife was M rs. George W allace, the wife of the Rev. George W allace, D. D., was for some years in charge of the Second C ongregation of St. A ndrew ’s C athedral. M rs. W allace was called to the U nited States by the death of her daughter in San Francisco. Miss W allace passed through H onolulu in December last on the way to California and was entertained qver night at the Bishop’s house. Dr. W allace was in New Y ork at the time of his daughter’s death, which occurred on January 31. Mrs. W allace stayed the n ight of February 15 at the Bishop’s house, where several of
her old friends called on her. She proceeded on her sad journey expecting to meet her husband and son in San F ran cisco. D uring his stay here Bishop McKim will preach twice at the Cathedral. T he Bishop has lived in Japan for many years and was consecrated Bishop in 1893.

W e have noted arleady, in a previous issue, of the Rev. W . H . Fenton-Sm ith’s departure from Hilo, and in this num ber we announce that M r. Bodel has been appointed to take charge of the Holy Apostles, Hilo.
This will necessitate a new man for Lahaina. I t so happened tha t the Bishop heard of no less than three good men who were willing to come to the Islands. One of these is the Rev. Sydney A t- tridge, now in the M issionary D istrict of San Joaquin. W hether he comes will depend upon his appointm ent by the General Board of Missions in New York.
In this connection we may state that there have been three meetings of the Board of Missions of this M issionary District, to consider with the Bishop the selection of men for vacancies and to vote the necessary money as far as their ability goes tow ards the support of several men.
A t one m eeting the Bishop submitted to them the appropriation for new work which he had asked of the General Board. A fter thoroughly going into the whole m atter, they advised him to emphasize, above all else, the need of a general missionary who shall have especial charge of St. M ary’s Mission, devoting a portion of his time here.
It is quite rem arkable that the day after this m eeting the Bishop received a letter from New Y ork in which the Board offered for the w ork here, a P riest who had been at w ork in Mexico, but had had to leave, and who sees no prospect of re turn ing to his form er field. A nother m eeting of the Board was called and the new phase of the m atter discussed, and the result was that a cable was sent to New Y ork which it is hoped will result in having a new w orker in the field before long.

On Sunday there was a Confirmation of three K oreans at 7 a. m. One of these tvas a young man 19 years of age who had become totally blind. H e is intelligent and speaks English well. I t is a pity that he cannot be placed somewhere or in some institution where he could learn some useful occupation.
At 8 a. m. the Bishop celebrated the Holy Communion at 10 a. in., made a brief address to the Sunday School, and at 11 o’clock preached at M orning Prayer.
The Church of the Good Shepherd, Wailuku, is certainly one of the prettiest country Churches we have seen anywhere. The exterior is pleasing, and the interior, with its rich koa furn iture in the Sanctuary and Choir, is really beautiful. The organ is of sweet tone, and Mrs. Villiers, the organist, is an excellent musician.
At 7 :30 p. m. the Bishop preached at Puunene, reaching W ailuku at about halfpast nine. On M onday, January 18th, calls were made upon the people, chiefly the men in their offices.
About 2 o’clock a s ta rt was made for Lahaina, with M r. Villiers as companion. When Lahaina was reached, at the pretty parsonage on the beach, a conference was held in relation to the w ork at Lahaina, after Mr. Bodel should leave. I t was a rranged that M r. M ainw aring should carry on the w ork as fa r as possible, until the Bishop procured some P riest to take charge.
It was after 1 o’clock when the Bishop stepped into the boat for the M auna Kea. It had been a pleasant trip, and it is astonishing how much more one can do in two or three days than it was possible to do, a few years ago, in a week.

On Sunday, January 23rd, the Bishop sailed on the M auna Kea for Hilo, to arrange, as far as possible, for the work of the Rev. J. K. Bodel, who takes charge jje first Sunday in February. M r. fieorge N. Day was on the w harf to wel- С0Ще us, and we proceeded at once to
parsonage. The Bishop was accompanied by the Rev. K ong Yin Tet, who also stayed at the parsonage.
^fter the 11 o’clock service a meeting *asheld, of the Mission Committee, and
was good to learn that so large a sum ad been subscribed tow ards the support . the Church. There is one subscrip- °n of $10.00 a m onth, five at $5.00 a °nth, and a number more at sums vary-

H apai, has made a good solicitor, and has made it possible, through the am ount raised, for. the Bishop to send M r. Bodel to take charge of the Chruch of the Holy Apostles. M r. Bodel spent the first two Sundays in January at Hilo, and the people requested his appointm ent, and he himself was desirous of m aking the change on account of the education of his children.
M r. Bodel and his excellent wife have done very good w ork at Lahaina. He leaves there w ith the respect and confidence of the people, to whom he has m inistered as P arish P riest for four years. The best wishes of our people in the Islands will go w ith M r. and M rs. Bodel in their new home.
A t 1 :30 p. m., in the Church of the Holy Apostles, the Bishop held services for the Japanese, preached and Baptized a child, the first infant of Christian p arents that we have Baptized in Hilo.
A t 4 o’clock the Bishop w ent by train to Papaaloa, where he was the guest of M r. and M rs. Colin M cLennan. A hearty service in the beautiful little Church was attended by a large congregation, chiefly of men who are connected with the plantation.
The Rev. M r. Cullen, and M r. J . N.S. W illiams, who was also guest of the M cLennans, were fellow passengers to H ilo by an early train of next day, M onday. The m orning was spent in calling upon the men in H ilo and endeavoring to emphasize the need of cordial and active cooperation with the new P riest if the Church is to do her work. T he Rev. K ong Yin T e t rem ained in Hilo for the rem ainder of the week, as he desired to visit the volcano, which he had never seen. A fter quite a rough voyage, H onolulu was reached at the usual hour Tuesday m orning.

On January 31st the Bishop visited Schofield Post Chapel. M rs. John E. Baird was kind enough to take him in
her automobile, Miss M ulheron and Miss Funston being also in the party. I t was a very wet and disagreeable day a t Schofield, and this in terfered m aterially with the num bers present, but, despite the rain, faithful people were there, and th irty received the Holy Communion. A fter the service the Bishop baptized the two young children of Captain and M rs. Browning.

There has been placed in the Cathedral, in memory of the late Dr. W alter R. Brinckerhoff, a memorial tablet o f rem arkable , beauty. Shortly a fte r Dr. B rinckerhoff’s death, the Bishop was approached on the subject of a memorial,
and after consulting the C athedral Chapter, the gentlem an who had the m atter in charge was inform ed tha t such a memorial could be placed in the Cathedral, provided tha t the design was approved by the Chapter.
In due time a photograph of the proposed model, came to hand and the Bishop and Chapter immediately accepted the design which had been laid before them. O n the arrival o f the bas relief the Chapter m et fo r decision as to the place on the wall where it should be erected. The Chapter recognizes that the place decided upon does not give it sufficient height for the best light. I t should be considerably higher but the architect will have to be consulted before any change is made.
The artis t who designed and executed the tablet, is John M assey Rhind, of New York. M r. R hind belongs to a family of sculptors and artists, and am ong his works are the fine bronze doors a t T rin ity Church, N ew York, which cost the donors $100,000.00.
I t is nothing but ju st to say tha t the artist, who is a connection o f the one who has been chiefly interested in the tablet, practically gave his services, so tha t while the tablet represents in value quite a large sum, yet this g ift of service made it possible to put the tablet in place.
Local artists and those fam iliar with works of this character, all agree that it is a very fine work of art. I t represents Jesus Christ w ith uplifted hands blessing and giving pow er to the young physician who is m inistering to the diseased man who is bending before him. F rom above shines the light from heaven illum inating and ■ giving pow er to the whole. T he tablet well deserves careful study for the beauty of its conception and the fine work done.

T he first m eeting of the Woman's Guild for the year 1915 was held with the President of the Guild, M rs. C. D. Lufkin. T here was a good attendance, and am ong other items of business transacted, the Guild voted to pay the somewhat heavy expenses connected with a thorough overhauling and tuning of the Church organ. .
O n Sunday, January 17th, the congregation enjoyed greatly a visitation by Bishop Restarick, and listened with pleasure and profit to a sermon by him on “Love” as the tru e Christian motive and atmosphere. F our persons were confirmed during the day, three at the early communion, and one after the morning service. Bishop R estarick also preached to the congregation at Puunene in the evening.
In the aftrenoon of Thursday, January 21st, the funeral services of Mr. Charles H . W hite w here held in the Church of the Good Shepherd, conducted by the Rector. M r. W hite died in the hospital at W ailuku, where he had been a patient for some time. H e came to

Maui with the intention of becoming an inmate of the Baldwin Home, but was too ill for this to be carried out, being a sufferer from acute B righ t’s disease.
Mr. W hite was at one time a teacher in the Iolani School, and later a teacher in the Royal School, of Honoluln, and still later, for a num ber of years, a bookkeeper on one of the plantations of H awaii. H e was born in Lincoln, England, and came to H onolulu from Cambridge to accept a position under Bishop W illis. It was his hope at one time, so he told the writer, to enter Holy O rders, but for some reason was led to secular employment. By those who knew him— and there are those in M aui who had known him for many years—he is said to have been a man of generous instincts, ready to give expression to his sympathies in tangible form. So far as is known he had, at the time of his death, no living relatives. The pall-bearers at his fu neral were all communicants of the Church of the Good Shepherd and, m ostly, members of the Vestry.
The arrangem ent for the Lenten services this year is as fo llow s: Children’sservice on M onday afternoons, a t three o’clock; evening service on W ednesdays at 7:30, and on Fridays a t 7:00. A series of brief addresses will be given by Mr. Villiers under the general head of ‘The Doctrines and Duties of the Christian Religion.” D uring Holy W eek there will be nightly services, and the Three- Hours Service will be observed on Good Friday. I t is hoped that the attendance will equal that of the Lenten season last year, which was very good.

ly of Apostolic origin, has held a place in the lite of the Church from very early time, and, certainly, the ideas and ideals which the Church associates with the Lenten season had a central place in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Some people, and not a few, seem to think th a t the Church puts her emphasis in L ent wholly, or nearly so, on fasting, and on fasting, not as a means to an end, but as an end in itself. In this they are mistaken.
I t is not the idea or aim of the Church to prom ote the spiritual life of her comm unicants through extrem es of physical mortification, but by a season of wise restraint, not only in the m atter of foods, but in the m atter, also, of pleasures and amusements, to recall to the memory of her children, and to revivify therein, the great tru th tha t it were no profit to man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul. The C hurch’s pu rpose in observing Lent is, thereby, to teach and emphasize a tru th which comm unicants of the Church, as well as others, not Church communicants, are liable, very likely, to forget, in these days when the tem ptation of life' is to put “first things first.” L ife’s tru est in terests are best prom oted, not by the things of pleasure and pastime, but by those things which dem and of us sacrifice and service in the name and spirit of Christ.
Some years ago a son of the writer, who had noticed his fa ther’s occasional lapses of memory, said to him in words of child-mind coinage, “Father, you have a good “forgctter.” I f ever, in the history of the Church, there was need of the observance of Lent, surely, there is such a need today, when there are so m any inducements held out to us to forget and tu rn away from consideration of the great tru ths that belong to the life tha t is life, indeed. The world in which we live, w ith its atm osphere of materialism , pleasure and amusement, tends both to religious neglect, m oral and spiritual obtuseness, and sins of omission and commission. Special seasons of religious concentration, such as Lent, are necessary to keep alive, and strengthen within our souls, the doctrines and duties of our Christian Faith.

SiThe above suggests a somewhat novel
point of view. Is it possible tha t there is tru th in. the suggestion? T here are really few churches in which the people are not like m ost Am erican people, friendly and cordial and glad to welcome strangers. A good m any causes in terfere with their show ing their friendliness. Sometimes shyness stands in the . way, sometimes ignorance of ju st the best way to proceed, sometimes a fear of intrusion and sometimes, as in m ost large churches, an uncertainty as to w ho is the stranger. A t any rate it is certainly w orth while that the visitor o r stranger should do his part. H ere are some suggestions for him. .
Rem em ber the difficulties which may
stand in the way of people speaking to you.
Rem em ber tha t some old parishioners have been rebuffed by people who do not w ant to be spoken to.
Rem em ber th a t the congregation is really glad to see you.
Take the initiative by giving your name to the clergym an or some responsible person. T ry to come to some m eeting or gathering.
i f nothing happens after such initiative try again for mistakes are sometimes made.
Finally rem em ber that as a Christian it is ju s t as m uch your responsibility to see that the Church does its w ork as it is the responsibility of the m inister or the old parishioners or anybody else.

Paauilo, Haw aii.The prevailing sin today, and one
which has created the hardest task the Church is asked to combat, is not any great or aw ful violation of the m oral law, but som ething which is ju s t as inimical to the life and welfare of the church — I mean a kind of good-natured indifference to any form of Christian service. These good men and women are ready to give high tribute to the Church, and to holy things in general, so we cannot look upon them as p ag an s; but the real offense is old, “ W hen i have a more convenient season, I will call for thee.”
Today a man will give of his funds generously, but ask such a one to be personally responsible for, or to assume certain religious obligations or tasks, and there is no response. T he sense of personal responsibility is almost lost sight o f ; the words “organization,” “congregation,” “ Church m embership,” etc., are so much spoken, so much in evidence, that they seem to have had the effect of changing the relationship between the individual member and his personal responsibility, and are, further, helping him to hide behind one or all of these “ stalking” collective nouns, from the security of which he feels he can so easily and comfortably fulfil his duty “en masse,” and thus avoid the “ennui” or irksomeness of assum ing the personal responsibility for the discharge of any duties or tasks connected with the Church or its mission. • ■
Now, I think no P riest or M issionary could do better during the com ing Lenten season, than to emphasize this se
rious lack on the part of our Church people, by rem inding them that the Gospel is for the individual soul—Jesus’ sacrificial blood was shed for you and for m e; God’s plan of salvation is not measured out to “g r o u p s ,n o r to “cities” nor to “societies” of worshippers, but to each individual member. The overture comes, “Lovest thou m e?” “ I f ye love me, ye will keep my Commandments.” Let the people, then, rise to the full m easure of their personal responsibility to God for the w ork H e has appointed them to carry on in H is name.

T he New Y ork Times says:New Y ork City contains no fewer than
tw enty-nine Episcopal Churches having memberships exceeding 1,000 each. The Episcopal Church report for last year shows the largest grow th along all lines in many years. T he Diocese of New York grew 5 per cent last year, and now num bers 93,424 communicants, w ith 35,000 more in Brooklyn and Queens.
In the whole country there are now eighty-five Episcopal parishes w ith memberships exceeding 1,000 each, a , gain w ithin the year of 16. There are fifty- six others now just below the 1,000 mark, many of which are likely to pass it next year. Chicago has two of these large

parishes, M aryland six, N ew ark three, Pennsylvania twelve, and in M anhattan and Yonkers there are twenty-three. Six of the num ber have above 2,000. The figures for the year show a total Episcopal membership of 1,032,600, a net gain of 28,400. .
New Y ork gives $3,000,000 a year in regular contributions, Brooklyn nearly another $1,000,000, and Newark, consisting of N orthern New Jersey, $650,000. The two other large dioceses in money gifts are Pennsylvania and M assachusetts.

The parent is the one who is responsible for the child’s train ing in every particular.
Now, the parents may do this train ing themselves or delegate it to others.
If you w ant your child to be an educated person you send him to that school which your experience tells you will give him the best intellectual equipment that you can afford. If he has a musical tendency, you send him to a musical instructor, which your own judgm ent has selected. _
It is a curious fancy that in religion the train ing which the child receives should be a m atter of his own caprice, for surely it can not be a m atter of his own experience. “Let him grow up and choose a religion for him self” is a favorite method by which parents unload from their own shoulders the whole responsibility of _ the religious and moral training of the child.
Religion, like education, is largely a matter of early training. One m ight as well say, “ Let the 'ch ild grow up and choose an education for him self.” I do not know w hether he will w ant to be a lawyer or a m achinist o r a bank clerk.”
W hat would be the result if you adopted this plan regard ing his education? Would it not be th a t he probably would be neither a lawyer nor a machinist nor a bank clerk, but a loafer. •
In the same way people say, I will let my children grow up. I do not know what they will w ant to be. In all probability they will not w ant to be anything but heathen. It is a curious world.

When a boy, the w riter lived on a farm. One sum m er the wells all failed to give w ater. On every side was heard the distressing announcem ent: “O ur well is going dry .” W hen only about a quart °f water could be draw n from our well at a time, father said: “ Now, boys,, we must deepen our well.” -
T he next m orning we boys* took our places a t the windlass, and as father dug and filled the bucket, we hauled up the d irt from the bottom of the well. By night we were very tired and ready to give up, but ju st before we did so, father called to us and s a id : “Boys, the w ater is running in very f a s t ; send the rope down quick.” This we did, and soon we had him out of the well. The next m orning we found by actual measurem ent tha t we had as much w ater in the well as we had deepened it during the day. W e had deepened the well ten feet, and we had ten feet of w ater, Ever afterw ards there was no lack of w ater in th a t well.
W e are running dry in our efforts to sustain missions. I t is m ore than our boards can do to supply the present demands. O u r wells are giving out. Debt is over us, and, strive as we may, the supply is not adequate to the demand. W e m ust deepen our wells. There is no real lack of means to carry on this God- appointed work. All that is necessary is for us to dig deeper into the source of supply. T here is plenty of means, but it is not on the surface. For years we have been satisfied iwth giving w hat we felt like giving. Too often we have not felt like giving anything. A t this crisis we m ust not talk about feeling. The dem ands upon us now call for m ore than ever before, and the remedy for our shortcom ings is to dig deeper into our L ord ’s com m and: “Go In to all thew orld.” Let us go down into the well of giving in the spirit of consecration. In our hands m ust be the shovel of prayer with which we m ust fill the bucket of dedication. The rope of liberalitv holding the bucket will draw up the load if the windlass of loyalty to God is used. W e m ust dig th rough selfishness, greed, and avarice, and the flow of money will come. saving it, saved the tru th which it contained. W e may dispute about the tru th now that it has reached u s ; we may pull it to p ieces; we may say that we do not like to believe i t ; but this at least,: in common honesty, we ought to acknowledge—that we owe it to the Church, and under God, to the organization of the Church, th a t there is the Christian tru th here at all for us to dispute about, quarrel with, and oppose.
But we may imagine someone saying to all this : _

is the religion of Christians. A nd certainly the Church cannot be accused of underrating the importance of the B ib le; large passages of Scripture are read by the Church at all her serv ices; nothing may be taugh t by her m inisters as essential to salvation which may not be proved by the Scriptures, and her motto has always been, “The Church to teach, and the Bible to prove.”
T here is, however, one fundam ental objection to such a statem ent with regard to the Bible being the only religion of Christians, and that is

I t was presumably not until m uch later tha t any Christian could have had all the books of the New Testam ent in his possession, scattered as they were, and not until the fourth century that the authorized list of books, as we have it now, was finally draw n up by the Church. T here were, of course, the Old Testam ent S c rip tu res; but no one would assert th a t these in themselves contained all things necessary for a Christian to know and believe for his soul’s health.

All this time the Divine Society was true to its trust, and souls which, if they had only to depend on a w ritten New Testam ent, would have had nothing to sustain them, had the ir minds instructed in the Christian doctrine, and their souls strengthened with the Christian Sacram ents by the Church.

But even more than this, when we are pushed by inquirers to say why we believe tha t the documents afterw ards
and very gradually selected out of the mass of current w ritings, to form a New Testam ent, were rightly selected, we have no answ er but this—tha t the Society founded by Christ was really given the guiding Spirit, which H e had promised, really had a “ right judgm ent” in all things, and am ong others, was rightly guided in rejecting this w riting from the canon and selecting that o n e ; we are bound to believe in an “inspiration of selection.”

W e come back, then, to this old formula, under which, if rightly understood, Church and Chapel m ight be reconciled. It is unhistorical to ignore a Society of eighteen centuries founded by Christ H im se lf; it is illogical to set up the Bible as a m ake-weight to the Church, when it is the Church which has brought us the Bible, and appears upon the scene in our genera tio n ; after its long course down the centuries, with the Bible in its hand. On the o ther hand, it is equally foolish to ignore th e . extrem e value of the w ritten record as a check on teaching and a test to which doctrine may be brought. I t is surely a design of P rovidence to defeat the self-will and im agination of man, who, but for that, m ight develop doctrine into som ething not easily recognized as Christian tru th .

T he English Church has been—at any rate, since the R eform ation— loyal to both sides of the T ru th . I t dare not disown its. unbroken history of so m any centuries, o r its commission from its Founder, as fresh today as it was eighteen centuries ago ; but on the o ther hand, it never hides aw ay its Bible. I t sa y s : “eSarch the Scriptures, and see if these things are so” ; it never has a service w ithout many passages of Scripture, and almost every prayer has an allusion to
som ething in the B ib le; and it is because in the m idst of a divided Christendom, it stands firm and unmoved on the rock of history with the Bible in its hand, that the one hope of a united Christendom seems to be this—that it may one day be reunited under the banner of the Anglican Church.

In a letter home a Cheshire man who was present at the battle of Mons states tha t he and a fellow-Englishm an lay wounded on the ground a fte r the great fight. H is companion seemed to be dying of th irst, and cried out piteously for water, but none could be found. A German officer, who was m ortally wounded, beckoned to an ambulance man, and pointed to his own w ater flask. I t was raised to his lips, but w ith an emphatic “Nein, nein,” was refused. H e insisted tha t it should be given to the thirsty Englishm an, and then passed away. “We buried tha t noble G erm an,” says the w riter, “with all the honors we could, and though we did not know his name, we placed over his grave" a little wooden cross with this simple inscription, ‘A l.’ ’
