A stroke occurs when a blood vesselin the brain is blocked or bursts. Thiscan kill parts of the brain by cuttingoff blood and oxygen. The parts ofthe body that are controlled by thedamaged area of the brain oftennever work properly again.
Know the SymptomsWhen a stroke occurs, brain damagecan begin within minutes. Quicktreatment may be the largest factorregarding how well one recovers.
Symptoms of a stroke include: Sudden numbness, tingling,
weakness or loss of movement inthe face, arm, or leg, especially ononly one side of your body
Sudden vision changes Sudden trouble speaking Sudden confusion or trouble
understanding simple statements Sudden problems with walking or
balance A sudden, severe headache that is
different from past headaches
See a doctor for any signs of a stroke,even if they go away. This cansometimes be a result of a transientischemic attack (TIA) or mini-strokeand is a warning sign that a strokemay happen soon. Getting earlytreatment can prevent a stroke.
Risk FactorsKnown risk factors include: high blood pressure (hypertension), atrialfibrillation, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, heavy use of alcohol, beingoverweight, physical inactivity, age (risk increases with age), race (AfricanAmericans, Native Americans, and Alaskan Natives have an increased risk),gender (women have a higher risk) and family history.
DiagnosisA CT Scan of the brain will reveal what kind of stroke has occurred and ifbrain damage has resulted.
TreatmentOnce the condition is stable, treatment focuses on preventing other problemsand future strokes. Medications and surgery may be a necessary part oftreatment. Rehab and home care may be needed.
