CHALLENGE

AnewlyconstructedwastetreatmentplantwasthefirstofitskindinFrance.Theplantprocessesover400,000tonsofmunicipalwastefromtheMarseilleprovince.Thewasteissortedintoplastics,metals,organicandcombustiblematerials.Theorganicwasteisusedtoproducebio-gasandcompost,andthecombustiblewastefuelsthefurnacetocreatesupercriticalsteamwhichisusedtogeneratepower.Thispoweristhensoldontothenationalelectriccompany.

Anysteamraisingplantwillusesteamdrums,andthesesteamdrumsrequireaccurateandreliablelevelmeasurementtoensurethesafetyoftheplant.Thewastetreatmentplantwasalreadyusingdifferentialpressure(DP)transmitterstomeasureandcontrolthelevelwithintheirtwosteamdrums.However,afterarecentreview,theplant’sinsurerswereconcernedthatiftheDCSwastofail,theDPmeasurementwouldbelostandtherewouldbenowayofknowingthelevelwithinthesteamdrum.Thiscouldleadtothesteamdrumrunningdry,orrisinglevelandwaterenteringthesteamturbine,bothcriticallydangeroussituations.TheinsurersinsistedonanadditionalmeasurementonthesteamdrumwhichwouldbeindependentoftheDCS.

SOLUTION

Theplant’soperatorsapproachedEmersonTM forasolution.EmersonproposedtheMobreyHydrastep,aproductdesignedspecificallyforthisapplication.OneHydrastepsystemwastobefittedtoeachsteamdrum.Thetwo-inputboardoptionwaschosenfordualredundancy;shouldoneboardfail,theotherwouldcontinuetooperateandprovidealevelmeasurement.

TheHydrastepiscapableofinterfacingwiththeDCS,butitwasdecidedtokeepitindependentincasetheDCSwastofail.Remotedisplayswerepositionedinthecontrolroomtogiveaclearandcontinuousindicationofthelevelineachdrum.

Theplant’sinsurerswerecontentthatHydrastepwouldgiveareliablelevelmeasurementandwouldenablethecustomertocontinuethesafeoperationoftheirplant.
