F1 Visa• Valid visa is required for entry only.

• Visa can be expired.

• A new visa is required if you leave the U.S. and return.

What means to be an F1 studentIn order for you to remain LEGALLY in

the United States, you must maintain your F1 status.

−Admission to the U.S. with a valid F1 visa−Successful Change of Status to F1−Visa can be expired as long as you

maintain your status

• Compliance with the immigration regulations

If Fallen Out of Status• Add credit hours (=$317 per

credit hour)• Get a new I-20, go back to

your country and come back• Petition for reinstatement to

F-1 status−No guarantee −Denial will result in immediate departure.

Statement of Understanding

Full time load• I must be a fulltime student

by enrolling and completing a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester to maintain legal status as an F-1 student.

• Spring and Fall only

• Summer is optional.

Grade

• I must receive a final letter grade of A, B, C, D, F, Z or P. I may not receive a W or Y if it means I will drop below 12 credit hours per semester.

Minimum GPA• I must maintain a minimum of

2.0 GPA.

Internet course

• I am limited to only one internet course. 

Advising

• I must see an International Student Advisor for course advisement and selection if I am taking ESL classes. 

Withdrawal

• I must speak with an International Student Advisor BEFORE withdrawing from a course.

Immigration Documents

• My passport and I-20 must be valid at all times.  

Address Change

• I must notify International Education Office of any address change within 10 days of the move. 

Travel Signature

• My I-20 page 3 must be signed by a Designated School Official (DSO) if I travel outside of the U.S. every semster.

I-20 Extension

• I must be in-status to be eligible for an I-20 extension. I-20 extensions are approved as long as the reason for delay is related to academic or medical reasons. 

Off-Campus Employment

• Working off campus without proper authorization can lead to deportation. 

On-Campus Employment

• I must be in status to be eligible if I plan to seek employment on campus (up to 20 hours per week). 

• ISCWE program – 3.0 GPA required

• If I fall out of status, it is ultimately my responsibility to resolve the situation with the assistance of the International Student Advisor.
