Since we just celebrated the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick during the Saturday Mass this weekend, I want to once again
address an ongoing issue, and a source of sadness and frustration for me: the confusion for many people between the Sacrament of the Sick, and the Sacrament of the Dying.
It is not unusual for me to receive a call to “come and anoint”. (So far, so good.) But once in a while the sick person has already died, and far too often the person is “actively dying” and no longer conscious, although they were conscious previously. That’s the frustration. If only I had been called sooner!
There seems to be a deeply-ingrained—although erroneous—belief among many Catholics (especially us “older” ones) with regard to so-called “last rites”. (Many younger Catholics, I fear, wouldn’t even know what I’m talking about when I say “last rites”, unless they’ve heard something of it from TV shows, or have picked it up from their elders.) Let’s start with some basic information about the Sacrament of Anointing, especially as it pertains to people who are sick at home, at a care facility, or in the hospital. (This is different from ministry to the dying.)
Whenever someone in your care becomes seriously ill, that is the time to call for the Anointing of the Sick. Don’t wait for them to be on their deathbed! The Sacrament is there to strengthen the person, and perhaps bring them healing. I am especially frustrated when I hear of people who refused to even consider the idea of “calling for the priest” when there was a serious medical condition for fear that “the person might think they’re dying!”
Some of the most exciting moments I have as a priest is when I have anointed someone and shortly after get a message that “right after, that’s when [the

The “One-Hour
Challenge!”
To have a happy, peaceful life, it is important that we have our lives in order, with our grateful response to
God for his gifts being our top priority. That is how a disciple responds in the areas of prayer, family, finance, and service.
If you need help to put balance in your life, take the “one-hour challenge”: Each week, spend at leastA
• One hour in prayer and worship.
• One hour, special, focused on your family or other important relationship.
• One hour’s wage (if you have a job) for the Lord. No job? Then give what seems right for you.
• One hour in service. (Helping another, or working for some cause.)
It’s important to be specific in what steps to take in order to ensure that each “hour” actually happens!
May God bless you!

person] really improved; we’re so grateful you came, Father!” Anointing of the Sick is precisely that: it’s for the sick.
IT IS NOT CORRECT TO THINK OF ANOINTING AS “THE LAST RITES” or “THE LAST SACRAMENT” to be given before a person dies. Properly, the sacrament for the dying is Holy Viaticum, which is Communion given to those who are near death. The Latin word, viaticum, could be loosely translated as [Jesus is] “with you on your way”. It is the joy and the privilege of Christians to be strengthened by the Bread of Life as we begin our final journey—for the Lord to be with us on our way—knowing that He has gone that way before, and has been victorious.
Now, even though I say anointing is not primarily for the dying, it certainly can be used at that time, for example if a serious condition just developed (as with an accident), or if a sick person, even if previously anointed, has their condition worsen and the danger has become more serious.
Now I quote from the official instruction for the priest as regards those who have died:
“When a priest has been called to attend a person who is already dead, he should pray for the dead person, asking that God forgive the person’s sins and graciously receive him into His kingdom. The priest is not to administer the sacrament of anointing.”
The instruction goes on to say that if there is doubt whether the person is dead, the priest may anoint “conditionally”. (Normally, we would interpret “doubt” to cover a very brief time after what appears to be death.
Any number of times—far too often—I have been called to minister to a sick person, and find that the person is unconscious or semi-conscious, although he or she had been sick for some time and had been lucid previously. Such a person misses out on the opportunity to go to Confession. In fact, the chief reason that deacons are not permitted to anoint the sick is that there might well be a need for the sick person to go to Confession before being anointed. The Sacrament of Confession is, of course, reserved to the priest.
Sometimes Shelli Jump, our Christian Service Director, or even Deacon Bob, will accompany me when I am called to anoint someone. Community is important. I ask Shelli, who assists me in scheduling most anointings, whenever possible, to set up a time when members of the family can be there to pray with the sick person. The value of community in ministering to the sick is evident also in the custom that has developed in our parish of frequently celebrating the Anointing of the Sick after a weekday morning Mass, or

even after Mass on the weekend. We can gather a goodly number of people then to “lay on hands” and pray. That has been a been a powerful experience for many people: one of comfort, strengthening, and healing.
In any event, the best procedure is to call for pastoral care of the sick as soon as it is
clear that there is a serious illness.

Everyday Stewardship
During the Easter season, we reflect on being followers of the stone that the builders rejected, the crucified and risen Jesus. Like a shepherd he leads us by his voice that echoes throughout the centuries and remains real and effective even in our modern world. To be his disciple means to risk rejection in a similar way as he experienced. The shepherd will not lead his lambs into danger, but there is danger all around us regardless.
Everyday Stewardship can be something we talk about in the abstract or a way of living we simply wish we could follow. It can be an imperfect reality that at times places us in direct conflict with the world. As we decrease and Jesus increases in us, many will be drawn to the love and compassion that flows through us. However, some will see us for fools and will suggest we are ridiculous. Cultivating our gifts for God's sake and the total surrender of all we possess and have become to God is not wise in some eyes. Either they think we are crazy, or, just maybe at times, the example of our lives causes them to question their own values.
If you give a little, you will be admired. If you give a lot, you will be celebrated. If you give it all, you can be rejected. Not everyone will have this negative reaction. Some will see your example and will seek to do the same. They will then join you in following the shepherd. They will become a true sign of Jesus Christ to the world. But their conversion of heart begins with you and your example.

A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Today’s gospel is a job description for Christian parents. For most people the most influential shepherds in their lives are their PARENTS. Every parent is called to be a “good shepherd” to “freely lay down their life” for their children, to “love” and “know” their children and to “lead” them so “they know your voice.”

Third grade students have really been enjoying writing in cursive! They are becoming so good with their strokes and connecting their letters to write words. We have completed all of the lowercase letters and this week we’ve begun learning the uppercase letters. They are very excited to be able to write their names using proper cursive letters.
In math, third graders are working on their measurement unit. They are learning both customary and metric units to measure. We will also include time and temperature in the measurement unit as well.

Why Do We Do That?
Question: Can you explain what we mean by a vocation or calling? I have heard this term used in many
different contexts and am not sure what it means. Does
it apply to religious life?
Answer: A vocation or calling refers to a spiritual experience whereby a person senses within oneself the
closeness of God and what he is asking in one's life. It
is a realization of what one's part in God's plan could
be. Vocation comes in all kinds of ways. Some are as
dramatic as St. Paul's, being knocked off his horse,
blinded, and hearing God's voice. Others are less
dramatic, often occurring over time through little events
and personal interests. Others happen in a hurry,
accompanied by great spiritual insight or conversion.
We often think that this applies to religious vocation, but
in fact, every Christian has a vocation, a calling to serve
others in and through the Church. Whether married or
single, religious or lay, we are all called to live out our
baptismal commitment to preach and teach the Gospel
message. Each of us has our role to play in God's plan,
and we become coworkers with God in the work of
redemption. With a little confidence, a willing spirit, and
God's grace, we can and will respond to his unique call.

Live the Liturgy
There is something comforting about knowing that
we are in someone's care. Children can feel this most
easily when surrounded by the embrace of a mother
or father. All is well. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. We
don't have to figure out all of the complexities of life.
All we need to do is allow Jesus to be the true
shepherd of our lives: to point us in the right direction,
lead us to the best pasture, and keep us safe from
harm. So many things in the world can hurt us, and
we can quickly find that we are on the road to
despair. Keeping focused on Jesus, remaining close
to him, allows us to develop the gifts and talents God
has given us and discover the key to true happiness.
Jesus welcomes me with all of my doubts and fears,
limitations and sins.

Pray for the Sick of Our Parish
All-powerful and ever-lasting God, your Son accepted our sufferings to teach us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who suffer pain, illness, or disease realize that they have been chosen to be saints and know that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Gospel Meditation
Today's Gospel occurs in the middle of Jesus' ministry. At first, Jesus' words seem to be about the value of self-sacrifice in a leader. "I am the Good Shepherd ? I will lay down my life for the sheep." The Apostles likely would have accepted these words easily enough. But then comes something more strange. "I lay down my life in order to take it up again ? I have power to lay it down and power to take it up again." Only later, when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them after his resurrection, would the Apostles understand his words. Only then would they understand why such an act was necessary for the salvation of the world.
Even now, we may struggle with the necessity of Holy Week. How often do we hear complaints against the silence of God, as if He is the "hired man" who "runs away" from suffering? Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is our redemption in fact. God himself bears the full weight of sin's consequences. The Paschal Mystery is also a sign that happens in full view of the human experience. We have seen Jesus lay down his life. We have seen him accompany others. "I know mine and mine know me." We have seen him reach those outside the traditional flock, "sheep not of this fold." Jesus is the Good Shepherd, not only in Scripture but in our daily lives.
While we can't experience physically walking alongside him like the Apostles did, the grace of our redemption continues through the Church. We are shepherded by the sacraments, by faith formation, by good mentors. At the same time, we are not only the sheep. In imitating Jesus, we, too, are invited to lay down our lives for others. We can be the hands, feet, and shepherd's crook of Christ.

Series: Deeper Reflections
April 24th at Sacred Heart Major Seminary – NFP, Subfertility and Infertility
April 22 – 28, 2018 is National Infertility Awareness Week. Approximately 1 in 8 couples will struggle to build their family. At this meeting we’ll explore NFP in relation to subfertility and infertility. Couples have found help from NFP to identify and treat a variety of fertility concerns. The Church recognizes the pain of infertility and offers her love and support to couples dealing with this unique cross. We will come together to offer prayer, comfort and understanding for all those affected by infertility.
RSVP to nfp@aod.org and visit www.aod.org/nfp for upcoming dates and more information!

Stewardship Thoughts 4
In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims, I am the Good Shepherd, giving us the beautiful image of Him as shepherd attending to us, His flock. In contrast to the hired hand that bolts at the first sign of trouble, Jesus will never desert His flock. St. Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles, reminds us that there is no salvation through anyone else but Christ. In St. John’s First Letter, he affirms that we are children of God. These themes are supported at the Lord’s Last Supper, where Jesus institutes the Holy Eucharist. He left us with an ongoing presence of His consecrated Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the sacrifice of the Mass. As faithful stewards, we believe and embrace this true presence. When we receive Holy Communion, we receive grace against evil and are inspired to share our joy in Jesus with those we encounter, to build up the Church, to evangelize the world, and to make disciple of all nations (Mt. 28:19). One way to take the Catholic faith to the streets is to join a local St. Paul Street Evangelization team, or to volunteer at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter serving our less fortunate brothers and sisters.
