Sunday Nursery
St. Michael’s Church Nursery is now open for children ages 1 – 4 during the 9:30 AM Mass.
Dear Friends in Christ:
Hurricane Matthew was a natural disaster of great magnitude. While the damage it did in our state and country was less than anticipated, it was bad enough. Sadly, some neighboring countries in its path were hit far worse than we, especially Haiti, where Reuters now reports the death toll at about 1,000. A newspaper article I saw with a picture of a woman sitting on the remains of her home, lament-ing that she had lost everything, reminded of some-thing that the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel once said, “The poor always suffer more when there is a natural disaster or economic downturn.”
On a visit to Haiti many years ago, I was astonished at the conditions under which human beings like you and me have to live. There were naked children walking around in what could best be described as an open sewer. When rains came, this same water would wash into their homes, which consisted of some pieces of corrugated aluminum supported by tree branches. My group was led into a kindergarten where the children cried out of fear when they saw us as they thought we were ghosts; they had never seen people with white skin before!
As I write this, Associated Press reports that helicopters are ferrying in food and medicine to devastated southwestern Haiti, but almost a week after Hurricane Matthew's assault, life here is still far from normal and desperation is growing in communities where aid has yet to arrive. Power is still out, water and food are scarce. Throughout Haiti's southwestern peninsula, people are digging themselves out from the wreckage of the storm, which killed hundreds, destroyed tens of thousands of houses, left at least 350,000 people in need of assistance and raised concerns of a surge in cholera.
“I lost everything. See what I have on? Some-body gave it to me," said Merlaine Chere in Port Salut. She showed off a wound from stepping on a nail and said she had been denied treatment at a local hospital because it demanded a $150 payment she didn't have.
Prayer for a New Bishop Almighty and all loving God, Eternal Shepherd and
Guide, we are grateful for Bishop Lynch and his twenty years of ministry in our diocese.
During this time of transition, we trust in Your love, confident that You will once again give to
the Diocese of St. Petersburg a shepherd who will inspire us to be Christ’s heart of mercy, His
voice of hope and hands of justice.
Guide our new bishop to enlighten our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments, and the desire to serve you in all things.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I know that the people of St. Michael’s would like to do something as a parish to help relieve the great suffering in Haiti. So I decided we would take up a second collection this weekend. This is in spite of the fact that, with the World Mission Sunday Collection next week, this will means there is second collection almost every week in October. Nevertheless, in all situations, we do what God makes possible for us to do. For as the Lord Jesus said, “Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matt 25:40) Sincerely in Christ,

BEING A CHRISTIAN……..is a lot like being a pump-kin. God lifts you up, takes you in, washes all the dirt off you and opens you up. He touches you deep inside and scoops out all the yucky stuff—including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see.
