October 2015Saint Michael Connections Make Me Comfortable I have always loved Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, and over several decades my connections with the parish have been numerous.

Pam and I moved from Chicago to Dallas in 1982, and nearly immediately our lives began

to be touched by Saint Michael’s. After spending many years in graduate school, my first “adult” job was as the religion teacher in the middle school at The Episcopal School of Dallas, which of course grew out

of Saint Michael. It delights me to no end when I walk in the north Lanai entrance and am greeted by Kelley Salewske whom I taught when she was in the 8th grade! (Neither of us have changed a bit!)

I can’t begin to list all the folk at Saint Michael who are friends and have had a major influence in my life, but I’d draw attention to at least a few. In 1987, Bishop Donis Patterson ordained me to the diaconate. The following year I was ordained to the priesthood. At the time one of the two priests who oversaw the formation of newly ordained clergy was The Rev. Michael Harmuth, who remains a good friend and mentor. As you’ll recall, Michael was the Lower School Chaplain at The Episcopal School of Dallas for 17 years. He continues to help the clergy of Saint Michael’s on Sundays. I’ll always be grateful to Michael for the guidance he gave me in the early years of my ministry.

As we reflect on the vibrant celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Saint Michael and All Angels on the Feast Day of Saint Michael along with the significant legacy of The Reverend Bob Dannals and his wife, Valerie, we parishioners cannot help but think about all of the impressive Rectors who have guided and nurtured our parish over the past seven decades. Some of us remember a Rector who was a consistent pastoral presence when our family went through a devastating experience. Others appreciate the teaching of a priest who touched our minds at a particular time, or one who invited us into outreach experiences that became important to us. Some of us regularly reflect upon those whose sermons challenged us into deeper spiritual growth.

Among the 12 members of the Rector Search and Transition Committee, we have heard the sentence, “Find a Rector like _______,” hundreds of times. In fact, the word “clone” came up in people’s survey responses! Each of us thinks of past priests of Saint Michael and All Angels and of other churches that have been important to us. Our memories seem to depend on the personal qualities of priests we’ve known and on how we knew them.

What will our next Rector be like?continued from page 1

Of course our new Rector will not be a “clone” of a priest any of us has connected with from past years. He or she will bring a unique set of gifts that we pray will be a perfect fit for the next stage of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas. As we try to discern who that may be, we will be sifting through the remarkable, frank, and substantive input you have given us through the survey. We plan to visit with you as our Parish family to share what we have learned from your survey responses.

You’ll find on this page a listing of the four sessions in October at which we’ll talk about the survey results, and continue our conversation on what qualities we want in our next Rector. We will try to find the Rector whom God has chosen to be our next leader.

Currently, we are sincerely grateful for the ministry of all of the Rectors of Saint Michael and All Angels, and of the clergy who supported them. Turning the corner, we look forward to a robust Interim period with The Very Rev. Doug Travis, and we look forward to seeing you at a Rector Search and Transition event soon!

The Farmers Market

Farmers Market Serves 7,500 During Season The Saint Michael’s Farmers Market closed for the season

on August 29th, marking its fourth year of bringing great local fresh-from-the-farm products to our parish and the community. The spring started off with several rainy weekends, but the market averaged 400 shoppers per week, reaching 7,500 people

over the course of the season.

Every Saturday beginning April 4th, anywhere from 20 to 28 vendors set up in Saint Michael’s north parking lot from 8:00 to 12:00 Noon to sell their products, the majority of which are grown or p r o d u c e d within 150 miles of Dallas.

The market f e a t u r e d several local f a r m e r s selling seasonal fruits and vegetables, most notably tomatoes, peaches, watermelons, squash, and berries. There were also local ranchers with grassfed beef, pork, sausage, and eggs. Shoppers were able to get coffee and

breakfast tacos or croissants while picking up fresh steamed tamales and other prepared foods. Kids and adults stayed cool with gourmet popsicles while enjoying music from the Discovery Mass Band. Some energetic

souls even took advantage of the free workouts offered by Crossfit Odyssey.

While many of these shoppers were parishioners, a large number were also non-church members who appreciated a chance to talk to and buy from local farmers and

merchants. They were greeted by a dedicated group of friendly volunteers at the welcome booth, where they found weekly recipes and devotions as well as information about church activities. Shoppers also contributed to our very successful drive for the Shoe Bank and other local organizations.

In 2016 the market plans to start its season in April, and we’re working on lots of ideas for improving and expanding its offerings. Elected Officials Discuss Faith and Society at The Forum in October

Three leaders in Dallas County’s major elective and civic organizations will discuss how their faith influences their roles in the community in The Forum at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel.

On Sunday, October 4, Miguel Solis, a member of the Dallas Independent School Districts Board of Trustees, will talk about issues facing the district and its new Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. Solis in 2013 became the youngest person ever elected to the Dallas School Board. He served as its president last year.

On Sunday, October 11, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins will meet with The Forum. As the chief elected official of the County, he presides as chairman of the Dallas County Commissioners Court. He is a graduate of Baylor Law School and president of the law firm Jenkins and Jenkins.

And on Sunday, October18, Larry James, Director of CitySquare will address The Forum. CitySquare is a civic organization with the mission to fight poverty through service, advocacy, and friendship. James has led CitySquare since 1994. Previously he was senior minister of Richardson East Church of Christ.

On October 25, the Rector Search and Transition Committee will be in The Forum with an update on the committee’s work and the recently completed Parish Survey.

Adult Bible Class Explores Judaism on Sunday Mornings

Judaism will be the focus of the Adult Bible Class on Sunday mornings in October. Dr. Howard Cohen will address the topic, “Everything you wanted to know about Judaism but were afraid to ask.”

Dr. Howard, a Dallas dentist, began studying the history of the first century about 30 years ago. It was then that he had a realization: Jesus was a mainstream Palestinian Jew.  In recent years, he has devoted his Sundays to discussing the Jewishness of Jesus.

“I want Christians to hear their own testament from a Jewish perspective,” Howard says. “Only recently have Christians begun to understand that their religious roots are Jewish, and they’re eager to learn and embrace the connections.” Cohen also believes that presenting the Christian testament from a Jewish perspective decreases anti-Semitism. 

The adult Bible study meets at 10:00 in the Coke Activities Room.

SMU Choirs Combine for Saint Michael Presents Community Concert

The three choirs from SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts are combining for a major community concert at Saint Michael and All Angels on Thursday, November 12.

As the opening concert for the Saint Michael Presents season this performance of music will

explore the spiritual and physical places we call “Home.” The centerpiece of the program is John Corigliano’s beautiful setting of the Dylan Thomas poem, “Fern Hill,” – the poet’s recollection of carefree childhood visits to his aunt’s farm in Wales. It will be a perfect introduction to the Thanksgiving and holiday seasons.

The choral program at SMU dates back more than 40 years. Many members have gone on to successful careers as vocalists, conductors, music educators and church music leaders. The Saint Michael Presents concert will feature the Meadows

Concert Choir (the largest mixed choir), Diva Dolce (a superb women’s ensemble), and SMU’s top choral ensemble, the

Meadows Chorale. 

The concert is free to the public. Tickets, at no charge, will be necessary to assure adequate seating. Tickets will be available beginning October 15.

Bishop-Elect George Sumner to Preach at Saint Michael October 25Bishop-Elect George Sumner will preach at the 9:00 and 11:00 services in the church on Sunday, October 25.

He was elected to be the seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas at a special election in May. In September he received the necessary consents from the House of Bishops and Standing Committees. The Bishop-Elect’s consecration will be 11:00 Saturday, November 14 at First United Methodist Church at Ross and Harwood (directly south of the Dallas Museum of Art) in downtown Dallas.

Following confirmation of his election the Bishop-Elect said, “I am excited about what God has in store for us in the Diocese of Dallas. The theme of our upcoming convention is God’s saying ‘I have a plan for you,’ from Jeremiah, and so we believe. Let us keep praying in confidence in accordance with that word.”

The Rev. Rich Towers Joins Saint MichaelThe Rev. Richard A. Towers has joined the clergy staff at Saint Michael and All Angels as a Weekend Associate. During the week he is the Lower School Chaplain at The Episcopal School of Dallas. 

Before coming to Dallas, Father Towers served as Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ithaca, New York. He also has served preparatory schools, seminaries and parishes in the United States and abroad, including South Korea, Guam, and the Philippines. As a Chaplain in the United States Navy, Lt. Towers served as Reserve Force Chaplain for U.S. Naval Forces Korea and prior to that as Squadron Chaplain for Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth.

A native of upstate New York and graduate of Bexley Hall at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Fr. Towers is completing a Doctor of Ministry in Educational Leadership at Virginia Theological Seminary.

It is time to make your annual stewardship commitment to Saint Michael and All Angels. Some may see it as an obligation, some as another monthly bill, some as a duty. Here is how some fellow parishioners see it.

As our family counts our many blessings, Saint Michael and All Angels rises to the top.  From the first time we watched our

young children run to sing (and dance!) in the Joy Mass choir or chant “I heard it” as the bread was broken, we knew we had found a home here.  Spiritually we have all grown in this community.  Joy Mass, Catechesis classes, Adult Formation classes, the annual Nativity Pageant and even the weekly treat at a bake sale make us feel whole.  Church is the foundation we rely upon for simple joys and during hard times.  We

give back to Saint Michael because of all that the church and God give to us.

Recently I turned 70 and discovered that I needed to start taking funds out of my IRA account. It was a great thing. I upped my pledge by a considerable amount and changed my will to leave a nice amount into the Saint Michael’s Foundation. It makes me so happy that I am able to support my church in this way because the church supports me in more ways than I could ever number.

Over the past six years our family has been part of the Lay Eucharistic Visitor Ministry. Our family has received more from these experiences than we feel we have given. All LEV ministers talk about how rewarding this experience has been for them. We feel fortunate to be a part of it and hope more people consider being an LEV.

Blessing of the Animals, Sunday, October 4From kittens to chickens, guppies to puppies, our clergy will be BLESSING all pets great and small on Sunday, October 4, at 4:00. This free event is open to the entire community, so come and enjoy this annual Saint Michael and All Angels tradition. A short liturgy will be led by the clergy followed by individual pet blessings. Each pet will receive a lovely St. Francis medallion for their pet collar. Nibbles will be served for the pets AND their humans.

Overview

Women of Saint Michael to Hear Expert on Historical Dallas

Jann Mackey, a well known expert on historical Dallas and the architecture that has helped define the city, will be the featured speaker at the Women of Saint Michael’s luncheon, Wednesday, October 21. The luncheon begins at 11:30 in Parish Hall.

Mrs. Mackey is a frequent lecturer in SMU’s Continuing and Professional Education programs, as well as for local historic preservation organizations, libraries, and community groups. In 2006 she was awarded a fellowship from the Royal Oaks Society, The British National Trust, and The Attingham Trust to conduct an in-depth study of British country houses. She currently serves on the board of Preservation Dallas and Saint Michael and All Angels Foundation. She will discuss “Historic Neighborhoods of Dallas: The Heart of the City.”

Woman’s Exchange Set to Open Its New Store - Book Signing Set

The new St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange will open its new store in Highland Park Village this month. The address is the same, 5 Highland Park, and the location is just a few steps from the old store. But, it’s all new and on two levels.

The Exchange will kick off its new home with a reception for author Kimberly Schlegel Whitman and a signing of her book Monograms on Thursday, October 22 from 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon.

Monograms, traced back to the 6th Century B.C., are still in vogue and the author gives exquisite examples of how to use monograms as your “personal logo” in stylish, elegant ways in any part of your home. Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, a resident of Dallas, is author of six previous books on entertaining and event planning, and is Editor-At-Large for Southern Living magazine.

Honor Our Veterans Sunday, November 8

On Sunday, November 8 at 5:30 we will honor our veterans and men and women in uniform at Saint Michael’s Annual Veterans Day Service.

All are welcome, so please invite your friends, family and neighbors of all ages as we say “Thank You!” to these heroes.

There will be a candlelit reception in the Garden Cloister following the service. Photos of Saint Michael men and women who served or currently are serving our country will be featured on our Wall of Honor for the month of November. Saint Michael and All Angels Day

Feast Day Celebrated 70th Anniversary and Dannals’ MinistryThere was jubilation at the Feast Day of Saint Michael and All Angels on Sunday, September 27 nearly 1,000 parishioners celebrated the church’s 70th Anniversary and the eight year ministry of Valerie and Bob Dannals.

More than 60 parishioners, the 7th Decaders, were honored during the service and presented a special 70th Anniversary commemorative.

Senior Warden Matt Waller read a Vestry Resolution thanking Valerie and Bob Dannals for their 8-years of ministry at Saint Michael. (see the resolution on page 12)

The Dannals then were presented gifts from the various ministry groups in the church, which included the unveiling of The Rev. Dannals portrait, which will hang in the Ambulatory with the church’s previous rectors. The Saint Michael choir presented an anthem, written and scored by Music Director James Diaz, as its gift to the Dannals.

Resolution Of Thanksgiving

WHEREAS, eight years ago, the Reverend Dr. Robert S. Dannals (Bob), and his wife Valerie, accepted our call to be our seventh Rector, and;

WHEREAS, Bob began his ministry among us by reconciling us one to another and to the changes in the Episcopal Church, and then soon thereafter, shepherded us through the Great Recession, and;

WHEREAS, among accomplishments too numerous to name, Bob led:

• Completion of the Expanding Our Faith capital campaign and

resetting our operational finances, all in the face of the Great Recession;

• Strengthening of our relationships with the Diocese of Dallas, The Episcopal

Church, several seminaries, and several missions of the Anglican Communion.

• Pilgrimages to the Holy Land, Greece, Turkey, and Rome;

• Founding of the Farmers Market;

• Establishment of the Saint Michael’s Presents music ministry;

• Building the new Columbarium;

• Development of the Preschool into the Saint Michael Episcopal School;

• Creation of the daily E-Devotions, which opened our hearts and minds to the scripture and

challenged us to accept our calling as Christians;

• Resolution of our long term relationship with the Episcopal School of Dallas; and,

• A vital Master Plan for our future mission and ministry as a parish.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Wardens and the Vestry of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, on behalf of its parishioners, recognize and give thanks for these accomplishments, but most especially express gratitude for his gifts in preaching and teaching, his tireless hard work on our behalf and for his graceful pastoring.

We also give our thanks to Valerie for her work among us, but most especially for her embracing love for us and her exuberance, joy, wit and beauty that captivated us.

We, as a community of Christ, will be diminished by Bob and Valerie’s departure. We wish them all the best as they move to St. Bartholomew’s, and we will treasure their friendship.

May God’s blessings be with them always.

Postcard From New York

Dear Friends,

How do we adequately tell you what is in our hearts as we write this postscript “thank you?” How do we sum up the myriad of feelings as we worshipped with you for the final time on September 27 -- Our parish’s 70th Anniversary! Well, there is no way to capture the full measure of our feelings in a few words, except to say with profound gratitude “thank you” for the many expressions of goodbye during the past months. The meals, the notes, the special moments, the receptions, the portrait, the purse, the gifts and the well-wishes have been extraordinary and quite overwhelming.

As we literally drive east to embark on interim ministry in New York, we are very taken by the honor of serving with you at Saint Michael and All Angels. You have given us extraordinary love and friendship as we have toiled in the vineyard of this part of God’s kingdom.

We hope you know what a remarkable parish you are! In the best “can do” spirit of Texas, we believe that your best days are ahead of you. We hope you give your unqualified, prayerful support to your clergy, your wardens, the Vestry, the future campus plan, and the Search Committee as you make transition and set a course for the next chapters of mission and ministry.

We go now, hoping that all of us will be embraced by Christ’s abiding grace as it opens us to “the broad open spaces of the universal love of God.” (Bonhoeffer)

Greetings from the Amistad Mission in Bolivia! As one of the long running mission trips of Saint Michael and All Angels, the Amistad Mission trip embodies the blessings of pilgrimages and experiencing life in a different place than our own. While the Amistad trip may not look like a traditional mission trip, it is a trip that invites us to see life through the lens of a different culture and people. It is a trip that invites us into change as we listen to the voices around us and seek to know God through new voices, new languages, new cultures, and new experiences. The beauty of a pilgrimage is that the work of the trip is to practice the ministry of presence and to listen for God’s love through the words of people that have a very different reality than our own. Though the context is different, pilgrimages to different places help us remember that gifts of the Spirit are in every community, and they help us to remember to look for those gifts when we are in new places and when we are at home.

Perhaps the greater challenge for us is to think of the ways that we can make pilgrimages in our community to discover the giftedness of our sisters and brothers across town. For example, what might we be able to learn from simply going to Jubilee and walking around the neighborhood while greeting neighbors? What gifts might we discover by praying with the good folks down at Austin Street Shelter? How can people living with HIV/AIDS teach us something about hope? How might we begin to change the world by simply looking for the unexpected in places where we are already doing ministry? We might just find that making trips around the world are not necessary to rediscover the giftedness of God’s creation; we might discover that taking a pilgrimage to a far off land is just the reminder we need to look for God’s beauty in the everyday of Dallas and Saint Michael. Through our current ministries, we might see that God is doing amazing things in our lives if we can stop long enough to pay attention.

Cuba Mission Trip – Sancti Spiritus, CubaIn October, Saint Michael and All Angels is making its final trip to Cuba to assist the parish in Sancti Spiritus with installing a new kitchen for the community in Cuba.

For the past few years, Saint Michael and All Angels has fostered a relationship with the parish in coordination with the Diocese of Cuba. As the relationship blossomed, Saint Michael and All Angels was able to assist with the purchase of a new parish building and renovations to that building. A Gift of Prayer to the Parishby Marillyn Burton Seeberger

The Prayer Ministry at Saint Michael and All Angels is pleased to announce two new leaders for the 2015-2016 term, Dana Juett and Joan Faubion. Each are dedicated members of Saint Michael and the Prayer Ministry and bring from their own personal, educational, and career backgrounds innumerable credentials that provide them with skills, talents, and character attributes that we will all be blessed to enjoy. They are enthusiastic about the coming year and have designed a program that will continue to enhance the “A Time to Pray” series from last year, via the bi-monthly evening meetings. Beginning at 5:30 on the designated third Thursday evening, snacks are available and we will enjoy the sacred music of Jackie Doss, followed by a member of the clergy as the guest speaker. We will always end with Evening Prayer and finish by 7:00.

Our other big news is a gift to the parish!

The leadership of the Prayer Ministry was searching for a gift of prayer to bring peace and serenity to everyone. Dana Juett remembered the popular Bach Noon Recitals from perhaps 25-30 years ago. Why not bring them back? And so we have.

We hope that Noonday Prayer will feel more available and contagious to many who say, “I’m too busy to pray”, as well as those who say “I really would benefit from carving out a bit of quiet, serene time.”

Noonday Prayers with music provided by James Diaz will take place on the following Wednesdays: October 14, December 9, February 3, and April 13. We will gather in Saint Michael Chapel from 11:45 until 12:40. This will include the Office of Noonday Prayer, 30 minutes of organ music, and 10 minutes of quiet meditative time, and intercessory prayer for those that would like it. It will be open to all members of the church as well as outside visitors. Everyone is invited to bring a sack lunch.

Parish Nurse Ministry. October is Women’s Health Month. In addition to the Blood Drive, the Parish Nurse Ministry will be focusing on Women’s Health Month in October. Nativity Pageant Tryouts are October 11

What part will your child play in God’s Story? If your child is age 3 – 2nd grade, their parts are assigned so all they need is a registration. For 3rd-8th grade children, we will be holding tryouts for Nativity parts on October 11th from 12:00 Noon - 2:00 and 4:00 – 6:00.

All children who tryout will receive a part. To register your child or to choose their tryout time slot, go to www.saintmichael.org/nativity.

This year’s Nativity Pageant will be on Sunday, December 20 in the church, followed by lunch in Parish Hall.

Home Communion and Instructed EucharistThe Paddock family will open their home for an informal home communion and light dinner. Disciples Class Wants Books for Jubilee Park

Every year Saint Michael’s 6th Grade Disciples Confirmation Class collects books to take to Jubilee Park. The group sorts the books by age and takes them to the community center for distribution at the Jubilee Park Literacy Fair.

Bring new or gently used books for all ages to the Youth Center by November 4. Help spread the word.

longtime Director of Adult Formation. At various times we’ve invited each other to give lectures or teach classes. One of my great pleasures while Dean and President of the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest was to witness Shelly receive the Durstan R. McDonald Teaching Award for a lifetime of excellence in Christian Formation and Education. What an acknowledgement of Shelly’s contribution to the life of the Episcopal Church, and likewise what a recognition of Saint Michael’s impact on the larger culture of the Episcopal Church!

And finally, of course, it’s been my great pleasure to get to know and enjoy the friendship of your retiring rector, The Rev. Dr. Robert Dannals. Bob served on the seminary’s Board of Trustees during my tenure as Dean and President. He was always very supportive of me in my role, but more than that he embraced the seminary’s vision which places it in the “deep center of the church,” a position very similar I think to that occupied by Saint Michael’s.

In an article I wrote several years ago for the seminary magazine, Rathervue, I insisted upon the centrality of friendship to all Christian endeavors. (Cf., John 15:12-17) I then proceeded to underscore that the “deep center” is not a point equidistant between two poles marked by cowardice, a lack of resolution, and an inability to make a stand! Rather the “deep center” is that space occupied by those whose first priority is Christian friendship – by those who have sought and, through God’s grace, attained authentic spirituality maturity and groundedness in Christ.

My vision for Seminary of the Southwest was that it be “a community in which we singly and together eschew the temptation to have an ‘other,’ but instead seek Christian friendship even with those with whom we disagree.” My every experience of Saint Michael’s is that it is precisely such a community, and so it is a great delight to be with you as your Interim Rector. My wife, Pam, and I look forward very much to being with you these next several months.
