Fundraising Objective and Results Our fundraising efforts have been focused on promoting two primary
goals: 1) to promote professionalism within dentistry and incorporate it
into all SPEA events and activities and 2) to raise awareness of SPEA and
the American College of Dentistry at Roseman. In September 2016, our
chapter presented a $500 funding proposal to the Roseman Dental
Student Association, which oversees all dental clubs at Roseman
University, to fund activities supporting these two goals. The proposal
was unanimously approved and will be used to support the 2016 Ethics
Fight Night Event and three additional Lunch n Learns.
Relationship with American College of Dentists In the Spring 2016, the Roseman Chapter of SPEA was honored to have Dr. Blaisdell, past Utah Dental
Association president and current representative of ACD in Utah come talk to us about the ACD and host
a discussion on various ethical issues surrounding dentistry. This event was very well received and we
are currently engaging with Roseman dental faculty who are members of the ACD on future events.
The Effect/Impact the Chapter has had on the Roseman University This year has been one of great effort on the part of the SPEA chapter at Roseman University. We have
strived to make SPEA an organization that has a real impact here at the school. This year, literally
everyone on campus knows about SPEA and what it stands for, which is a major difference from years
previous. We have definitely had an uphill battle to make SPEA more relevant on campus, however this
year we feel that we have done just that. Beginning with our Rush Week at the start of school, we made
a huge push to involve D1 students and create a culture of the engagement and involvement. For the
first time ever we had three people run for the D1 representative for SPEA; instead of having to beg
someone to be involved. The presence and culture of Roseman SPEA is beginning to shift. We are seeing
new growth, new excitement, and
more involvement than ever before.
Students are engaged and excited
about events. After events we ask
students what they liked about the
event and why they came. We have
received responses such as, “I was
intrigued by the description of the
event, I really wanted to come hear
“SPEA has raised the ethical standards high at Roseman and has challenged the students to think more about ethics in dentistry.” Former Roseman SPEA President Andy Suh
about the doctors’ experiences in practice and how they handled ethical situations they found
themselves in.” Responses like these have been both humbling and ignited a sense great pride in what
we as a SPEA board are striving to accomplish at the school. Roseman SPEA has also made a big push to
encourage opportunities for students to dialogue with dental faculty as well as, national and state
leaders in ethics and professionalism. Over the past year, we have organized events with members of
the American College of Dentists, the Executive Director of SPEA, Utah State Dental Board
Representatives and Dental Licensure examiners. We have gone from having events on campus with no
more than a handful of people, to now averaging more than seventy people at our events. While we are
very happy about the results we are consistently seeing, there still remains a great deal to do. We hope
to continue to build upon this past years activities to leave a legacy that affects and impacts students for
many years to come.
Accomplishments and Goals Achieved Throughout the Year The culture of Roseman University College of Dental Medicine is centered around the lifelong colleague
philosophy, that every interaction reflects a sincere desire to develop each other as lifelong colleagues.
The mission of Roseman’s Chapter of the Student Professionalism and Ethics Association (SPEA) is to be
a leader in educating dental students on the importance of ethics and professionalism. The Roseman
Chapter of SPEA combines the Lifelong Colleague philosophy with the mission of SPEA to promote ethics
and professionalism. As a chapter, we identified four goals to further the SPEA mission and focus our
events and activities. These goals are to
1. Emphasize professionalism and integrate it into all Roseman SPEA events 2. Take new approaches to promote ethics within the school 3. Raise awareness of SPEA and ACD and what these organizations entail 5. Promote lifelong colleague within SPEA
Over the past year, SPEA has been successful in building its presence on
campus and increasing student participation in SPEA activities. Roseman
SPEA has gone from having only a handful of students attending our
events to having more than 50 students routinely attending events. Our
kick-off event for the 2016 Academic Year was a lunch n learn to discuss
how to use social media ethically and professionally to promote your
dental practice. The interactive event was attended by approximately 70
students and was very positively received. We received feedback from a
lot of students that they would really like a follow up event to dive more
in-depth into this topic.
This past year, our chapter has had a very successful collaboration with
the Roseman ASDA chapter which has allowed us to expand our reach in
raising awareness of ethics and professionalism issues. For example, ASDA
hosted a Dental Jeopardy night, and Ethics was one of the six broad topics
included in the event. We also held a two-part series discussing dental
“Working with SPEA over
the last year has been an
incredible experience for us
in ASDA. Their willingness to
collaborate has helped us
raise awareness not only
about ethical issues facing
dental professionals, but
more importantly the
importance of getting
involved and giving back to
the profession.”

Roseman ASDA,
licensure exams. The first session was led by ASDA and reviewed the different types of licensure exams
and the pros and cons of each. The second session was hosted by SPEA and was a panel discussion with
CDCA and WREB board examiners and a member of the Utah State Dental Board. During this panel
discussion, students were exposed to the perspectives of board examiners and state dental board
representatives and ask questions of the panelists.
The Roseman Chapter of SPEA continues to work to raise awareness and discussion of ethical and
professionalism issues within the dental student body. We strive do this within the lifelong colleague
philosophy and are very proud of our collaborations with the Roseman ASDA Chapter and other dental
clubs.
