Managed LanesWhat are Managed Lanes• TxDOT defines a managed

lane facility as one that increases freeway efficiency by packaging various operational and design actions.

• Generally a “freeway within a freeway” where a set of lanes within the freeway cross section is physically separated from general-purpose lanes

Express LanesWhat are they?• Physically Separated Toll

lanes with Controlled Points of Access

• Utilize Fixed, Variable or Traffic Responsive Tolls to Manage Demand

• Also Known as Value-Priced Lanes

Objectives• Relieve Congestion • Optimize Use of Capacity• Improve Operating

Speeds• Provide Incentive for

Modal Shift• Offer a Reliable

Alternative

HOT Lanes HOT lanes are limited-access, normally barrier separated highway lanes that provide free or reduced cost access to qualifying HOVs, and sell additional capacity to other vehicles which do not meet passenger occupancy requirements.
