Electromagnetic Environments

Pina has lead the Test and Experimentation discipline leadin her S&T capability team, where she led and managedall the testing and experimentation of installedelectromagnetic systems on air, navy, land and spaceplatforms. Pina’s current role is Acting Group leader ofthe Electromagnetics Effects, Characterisation andControl Group, where she manages and leads a groupthat researches on computation & testing of complex andhigh power electromagnetics. In 2010 Pina was awardeda Defence Science Fellowship to undertake a 12 monthsresearch associate placement at the Naval PostgraduateSchool, Monterey, USA in the Department of Electricaland Computer Engineering, where she was researchingthe concept of integrated masts as an ElectromagneticInterference mitigation strategy. Pina has publishednumerous technical reports, journal and conferencepapers.

Pina is currently the first female chair of the IEEE SouthAustralia Section. member of the IEEE EMC Society,member of the IEEE EMC Society Technical Committee 9on Computational Electromagnetic and a member of theApplied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES).She is also a member of the Engineers AustraliaElectromagnetic Compatibility Society. She establishedthe IEEE-SA section Women in Engineering Affinity Groupand held the position of Chair and is presently theVic-Chair. She has also held the office of Treasurer of theIEEE-SA section. She presently holds the Vice-Chair of theIEEE-SA section and Vice-Chair of the Women inEngineering Affinity group, IEEE-SA section. One of herpassions is promoting STEM and STEM careers tostudents, in particular high schools girls.

Abstract: The modern war-fighter relies heavily onsensor (Radio frequency and Electro Optics) andweapon systems to detect, track, identify and thendefeat threats. These systems have to have theability to collect, process, integrate and transportinformation throughout and between platforms.The function of these systems can be influenced ordegraded when operating in a contested andcongested electromagnetic environment that is amixture of intentional and unintentionaltransmissions. This can create some significantelectromagnetic compatibility (EMC) challenges,which will be highlighted, discussed and theresearch being considered at DST Group in anattempt to address these challenges.

Biography: Pina obtained abachelors degree (Hons) with1st class honours in Physics in1991 and obtained her PhDdegree in Physics on the topicof “A Study of PulsedTownsend Discharges inMolecules and Atoms” in 1996.Both degrees were attainedfrom Flinders University. Afterher doctorate she had a breakfor few years and then worked

in private industry as a Research & Development SalesConsultant. In 2000 she joined Defence ScienceTechnology Group (formerly DSTO) Edinburgh, SouthAustralia as a research scientist where she worked onassessing the impact of electromagnetic systemsinterfering with command and control systems. In 2003she was promoted to Senior Research Scientist atDefence Science Technology Group, to lead and work oncomputational electromagnetic (CEM) analysis for largeelectrical structures, in particular maritime platforms,and has now expanded her work into considering CEManalysis for small space platforms. She leads all thecomputational electromagnetic modelling for maritimeand small space platforms. Her research interestsfocuses on electromagnetics, in particular theelectromagnetic characterisation of installedperformance of radio frequency systems (focus onmicrowave RF), radio frequency systemselectromagnetic interference, and the mitigation of RFsystems electromagnetic interference and compatibilityinstalled on structures.
