Characteristics of Cloud Computing?

• Hosted at a superior Data Center • Shared Platform• Location Independent• Maintenance and upgrades performed by vendor• No CAPEX requirements• Easily Scalable• Subscription or Utility Model

Infrastructure in the Cloud

• VPS (Virtual Private Servers)– Dedicated Server– CPU/Memory/Storage configurable– Administrative access– Fast Deployment– Monthly Fixed Cost

Infrastructure in the Cloud

• Utility Computing– Dedicated Servers on demand– Configurable by the user– Deployed by the user on demand– Billed on a utility model (pay for use)– Similar to Amazon EC2

• Cloud Storage– Available

• Can be accessed from any location• Quick deployment

– Scalable• Capacity can be increased on demand

– Resilient• Data is redundantly stored

– Secure• Multiple data protection techniques employed

Why Infrastructure in the Cloud?

• Abstraction of the hardware and server requirements from the application.– Focus on your core business.– Faster to market.– Predictable costs over time– Instant Scaling

Lower Costs. The user need not pay a single (usually large) licensing fee. He only needs to pay recurring

subscription or usage fees.

Fewer Personnel. The need for specially trained IT personnel to handle maintenance, monitoring and software

updates is eliminated. The Cloud provider will provide a dedicated team to handle these tasks.

Advanced Systems.Cloud Applications will be more advanced in terms of reliability, availability and security than

most SME solutions traditionally available.

Client and Provider Goals Alignment.Providers must now work consistently to earn the continued business of the client. There is

no assured lock in since the client is free to leave with their data at any time.

What to look for in a Cloud Vendor• Financial Stability

– Ability to finance continued operations

• Transparency– Quality Assurance – Verifiable Capabilities

• Security and Data Protection– Documented Security Policies

• Service Level Agreements (SLAs)– Clear SLA with documented Remedies

• Support– 24/7 Support?

Cloud Ready InfrastructureCloud Ready Infrastructure• VITRO Internet Exchange (VIX)

• Internet Content Exchange• Connected directly to most major

Internet Providers
