Specialties of training
To build better livelihood restoration is a crucial factor for sustainable recovery and building
resilience to future disasters. Hence, we have scaled up viable and market oriented alternative
livelihood training trades to reduce vulnerabilities that may lead to poverty in affected areas.
Our recovery framework is nearing its crucial phase of sustaining the work, which we jointly
carried out with support from ILO-UNTRS-AIF-UNDP & training providers. Results will have to
be demonstrated in terms of placement of trainees and sustainability of the alternative
employment opportunities created. This placement brochure is an effort to market the skills
of our dedicated and hardworking trainees and we reaffirm our commitment to the society
“we build back better” for economic and social reconstruction of Tsunami affected coastal
communities.
Can you be my
prospective employer?
Merly daughter of a
gulf returned
coolie labour
studied up to Plus
Two and decided to
discontinue her
studies due to economic
hardship. Dreams of becoming
a teacher remained as her
unfulfilled ambition. Poverty
and ill health of her father again
worsened the situation. Her
parents were not able to send
her for higher education and
preferred to invest on her only
brother whom they wanted to
be the bread winner of the
family. In the mean time Merly
got married to an X-ray welder
working in Gulf. To meet
marriage expense her parent
arranged loans and personal
favors from relatives and was
submerged in debt trap.
Life became more miserable for
the family as Merly’s husband
failed to earn enough to sustain
a family of five members.
Despair stuck her again and she
was in no mans land. In such a
perplexing situation Merly came
to know about ILO-ALP-UNTRS
Project and approached QSSS to
find her destiny. Merly was
counseled by project team and
was enrolled in 6 month Diploma
in Computer Application course.
Being an ardent learner she
became “the best” in her batch
and was loved by other ALP
trainees. Being punctual,
responsible, resourceful and
friendly, other students started
approaching her with doubts
and thus become their “kutti”
teacher. In a span of six months
she came out with flying colors.
Merly said- “I realized my
teaching skills when I did topic
presentation as a part of my
course curriculum. I am now
confident enough of getting an
enchanting career waiting
ahead and hope to support my
family with an additional
income. Merly concluded her
conversation with project team
by showing her deep adoration
to ALP and said “I bestow all my
earned success to Alternative
Livelihood Project for helping
me to make my life a meaning
full one.

We Give Voiceless People
“A Voice” Through Economic
Reconstruction
Quilon Social Service Society is a Non
Governmental Organisation working for coastal
communities of Kollam coast since 48 years. In
southern Kerala, after December 2004 Tsunami,
we succeeded in extending a plethora of succor
to affected communities and assisted them in
rebuilding efforts focusing on shelter,
psychosocial support, capacity building,
livelihood, disaster management and advocacy.
To be with the least and the last is the guiding
principle that makes us walk with them.
QSSS in association with International Labour
Organization is implementing Alternative
Livelihood Project in Tsunami affected villages
of Kollam district having a target to train 495
youth/SHG members in a variety of technical
and non-technical trades with resource support
from reputed training institutes of government
and private.
ALP aims at creating alternative employment
opportunities with specific objectives of
diversification of coastal economy through
expansion of human and social capital for
employability and inclusion of vulnerable
groups such as woman-headed households,
persons with disabilities and other under-
privileged sections of society with a
meaningful purpose to improve skill and
competencies to get high reward in terms of
money, efficiency and utility. Post training
support and monitoring is prime concern of the
project.
