It is used to talk about actions or situations in the past that have already been finished.

She played with her friend

It is used to describe actions that are in progress or that haven’t finished yet

She is playing with her friend

SIMPLE PAST• Tommy and Carlitos played with a ball.

PAST CONTINUOUS• Tommy and Carlitos were enjoying their vacations.

EXAMPLES

Past Continuous + Simple Past

I was sleeping when the alarm rang

We can join these two actions with when:

I was watching TV when The light went out

We can use:

when + short action (simple past tense) while + long action (past continuous

tense)

1. I was watching TV 2.The light went out

There are four basic combinations:WITH WHEN:

She was walking WHEN it started to rain.WHEN it started to rain, she was walking.

WITH WHILE:•He arrived WHILE we were eating.•WHILE we were eating, he arrived .
