Data citation

What is research data?

- Research data means data in the form of facts, observations, images, computer program results, recordings, measurements or experiences on which an argument, theory, test or hypothesis, or another research output is based.

- Metadata means information or facts about

research data for the purpose of attribution, description, management, verification and discovery.

“In recognition of the significance of data as an output of research effort, this journal requires data to be cited in the same way as articles. If citing or making claims based on data, please refer to the data in the text and provide a formal citation in the reference list. We recommend the format proposed by the Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles: Author; Year; Dataset title; Data repository or archive; Version (if any); Persistent identifier (e.g. DOI).”

Why cite research data? How?

Data publication

Journals and their publishers are in a position to make a significant contribution to enabling access to the data underlying the articles we publish. Our research has shown that journals are second only to funders in influencing authors to make their data openly available.

Funder mandates

Many funding bodies now mandate that data produced from funded research be made available, similar to Open Access mandates. The SHERPA/JULIET site can help you review which mandates different funders require:

NHMRC and ARC both encourage, but do not mandate, data sharing RCUK: “Published results should always include information on how to access the supporting data”

How can we make this easy for authors?

• Authors create data during the course of their research

• This data will soon be able to be uploaded within the existing ScholarOne manuscript submission system.

• After acceptance, data files will be transferred to figshare under a CC0 license without charge or further work.

• A link to the data on figshare will appear in the published article on Wiley Online Library as a full data accessibility statement.
