SettingsBaltistan – the mountainous area that
includes such places as Korphe; this is the home of the people known as the Balti
K2 – the mountain that Mortenson wanted to climb following the death of his sister Christa
Korphe – the village where Mortenson wound up after being lost for some time and where Mortenson started to see abysmal (truly poor) living conditions
![Page 14: Amelia Goudie Period 6](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062410/5681610f550346895dd067c5/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Themes
• CHARITY• GRATITUDE• MAKING A DIFFERENCE
"The first cup of tea, you're a stranger; the second cup, a friend; and the third cup, you're family."
I would give this book a 9 because its story has a powerful and inspirational impact
![Page 15: Amelia Goudie Period 6](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062410/5681610f550346895dd067c5/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The main social issue of this book is Education in Pakistan and
Afghanistan
![Page 16: Amelia Goudie Period 6](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062410/5681610f550346895dd067c5/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Why is this issue a problem?
• Children in rural areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan are being raised with the thought that their life is worthless
• They grow up to become terrorist because they don’t know any better
• Children in these countries (especially girls) are denied of their human rights
• There is a lack of educated people in these countries because so many children grow up without a school to go to
![Page 17: Amelia Goudie Period 6](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062410/5681610f550346895dd067c5/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
• YouTube - Greg Mortenson Interview
What is being done to solve this issue?
