Concept of Repository ETD repositories are becoming a major resource for
information in all subjects and ETD repositories are
providing institutional knowledge available online and
thereby increasing it’s visibility and use.
ETD are the important source
for the researcher in the world. many higher education
institutes are actively engaged in introducing ETD
repositories at national as well as international level.
Benefits of ETD Repository• More access to research
• Less expense to authors and libraries per cost
• No physical shelf space
• Lower cataloging costs.
• Better presentation of research
• Addition of multimedia files
• More dynamic presentation of data hyperlinks
• Programs and code
• Other format support.
Merits of ETD RepositoryFollowing are the merits of ETD which are given by Bandra (2002)1
• To improve Students to convey a research message through the use of multimedia and hypermedia technologies.
• To improve graduate education by allowing students to Produce electronic documents, use digital libraries and understand issue in publishing.
• To increase the availability of student research for scholars and preserve it electronically.
• To lower the cost of submitting and handling theses and dissertation.
• To empower universities to unlock their information resources.• To advance digital library Technology.
Creation of Repository For creation of ETD word processor software vis. Ms-Word,
Latex etc.used The theses or dissertation are submitted as a
PDF (portable Document Format) file. Dspace, Reprints ,
Fedora etc.digital softwares has been broadest applications.
Today open Archives initiative protocol for metadata
Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is an interoperability framework based
on HTTP . Metadata tags such as SGML/XML and MARK UP
language that assign unique identifiers to identify items with
in a repository
UGC Recommendations The UGC Notification (Minimum Standards & Procedure for
Award of M.Phill./Ph.D. Degree, Regulation, 2009) dated 1st
June 2009 provides for submission of electronic version of
theses and dissertation with an aim to facilitate open access to
Indian theses and dissertations to the academic community
worldwide. Online availability of electronic theses through
centrally-maintained digital repositories will not only ensure
access and archiving of Indian doctoral theses but will also help
in raising the standard and quality of research.

At University level well-equipped computer labs must be put in place to provide, reducing the time from acceptance to public access, and, of course, one ETD can have multiple simultaneous usersLibrary community must take initiatives in the maintenance of ETD seriously. It is essential for librarians as information professionals to take the initiatives to make progress in this crucial area and librarian should take opportunity to attend workshops and conferences to gain knowledge of ETD repositories.
Role of Universities and Librarians
ConclusionINFLIBNET is now taking steps in this direction. INFLIBNET
starting developing a National Union Catalogue of ETDS in India
and INFLIBNET can assist them in formulating the policies
training and necessary funding. The ETD repositories should be
properly uploaded and maintained in order to provide accessibility
of research work. There is increased need of discussing these
problems globaly and UGC, INDEST consortium an open Access
Advocacy Group, ICSSR and National knowledge Commission.
are Playing key role in framing National policies for digitization of
theses and dissertations in India
