March 2020
Rock Steady Boxing – Bonita South Bay is Here!
Thanks to grants from both the Parkinson’s Association and San Diego Central County Parkinson’s Support Group, Rock Steady Boxing–Bonita South Bay is up and running. Rock Steady Boxing is a multi-faceted exercise program designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s. It is non-contact, and thus differs from what you see in the ring. Exercises combine physical activity and the learning of new
skills, requiring the brain to adapt to new challenges and routines. Coach Lisbeth Garces is ready and waiting to welcome you to the world of exercise…rock steady boxing style! San Diego’s first bilingual Rock Steady Boxing classes start March 10th, and will be held Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 1:00–2:30pm at Azteca San Diego Boxing Club, 4088 Bonita Rd., Bonita 91902. For more information or to schedule an initial assessment, please contact Lisbeth at: 619.917.3904. To learn more about Lisbeth, please see this month’s In-Focus article on page 2.

IN-FOCUS: Lisbeth Garces
By Dolores Cohenour
San Diego’s newest Rock Steady Boxing coach, Lisbeth Garces, has had extensive personal experience living with disability. Originally from a small town in Venezuela, Lisbeth’s sister was born with cerebral palsy, her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 60 and, more recently, her brother, as well. Lisbeth’s sister received no medical support or education and had no social interaction outside of the immediate family, and Lisbeth witnessed the slow decline in her mother, who has had little support, as well.
In 1989, Lisbeth learned that her 4-year old son, Juan Carlos, had Muscular Dystrophy. Unable to offer help, doctors in Venezuela advised Lisbeth to go to the United States. Having seen firsthand how people with disabilities live in Venezuela, Lisbeth vowed to provide her son with physical and social activities that would give him better quality of life. With neither of them speaking a word of English,
they immigrated to the U.S. later that year, arriving in San Diego where her brother lived. Lisbeth worked for her brother’s business, cleaning homes, and cared for Juan Carlos for the next 10 years. Knowing that his life could be cut short at any time, she sought out experiences that would enrich his physical and emotional life. Juan told her how empowered and joyful he felt when he took part in physical activity. In 1999, Juan Carlos passed away at age 15. Grief stricken, Lisbeth could not eat or sleep and turned to exercise in an effort to exhaust herself so sleep would come. Experiencing the many benefits exercise offers, Lisbeth became certified as a Zumba instructor and, in 2008, began teaching at the YMCA.
Remembering how happy her son was when engaged in physical activities, Lisbeth decided to turn her grief into something positive by giving back to those living with disability. One day a lady came to the YMCA with her son who had Downs Syndrome, and he started dancing. “It was just incredible!”, exclaimed Lisbeth. So, she began teaching dance to low-income, disabled children, and started her non-profit, The Juan Carlos Foundation (in memory of her son) to help underwrite the program. Soon after, Lisbeth’s teaching expanded to people with Autism, Muscular Dystrophy, seniors, and people in wheelchairs.
While at the Y, Lisbeth met Donne Willett who wanted Lisbeth to become certified to teach dance to people with Parkinson’s. Both Donne and Lisbeth dreamt of a place where people with Parkinson’s could come for physical therapy and exercise. Lisbeth learned about the Parkinson’s Network, which certified her to teach dance and physical exercise to people with Parkinson’s. Not ready to stop there, Lisbeth sought and received a grant from the Mohammed Ali Foundation to learn how to reach out to the non-English speaking Latino community so they could receive help. Then, with grants from the Parkinson’s Association and SDCCPSG, Lisbeth completed training last month to become a Rock Steady Boxing coach, and will start teaching bi-lingual boxing classes this month, in Bonita, for people with Parkinson’s.
Remembering her mother and how she couldn’t help her, Lisbeth says, “Now, I feel like I can help people with disabilities who feel they cannot exercise. I can show them how to do the exercises in a safe way and this can make a difference in people’s lives. The only way to fight Parkinson’s is to move, to exercise, to find and push it back from taking away your mobility. And, I have made a difference in people’s lives and this is why I am doing this. I feel blessed that this has happened, and I feel that my son, Juan Carlos, is with me helping others.”
