The Scrum RolesAs an IT Leader, I need a clear understanding of all the

Scrum roles, so that I can help the team work well together.

The Scrum RolesWhat is your ROLE in your organization?

Product Owner/Product Manger, Scrum Master, Developer, Manger/Leader, Project Manager, or Other?

- General George S. Patton

Never tell people HOW to do things. Tell them WHAT to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

A Word of CautionScaling a Broken System Won’t Fix Anything

Assess Your Scrum TeamEvery team has a PO & SM with a clear, ordered backlog; they perform all Scrum events and deploy on their own.

Some of the events, roles are missing but they still produce working product each Sprint.

Bad Symptoms• “We have no dedicated PO or SM roles.”

• “Our teams do some events, no one goes to backlog refinement.”

• “There is no transparency of our work.”

Aren’t Daily Scrums all there is to Scrum?

The Scrum of Scrums (SoS)

• Not an event

• A “Team of Teams” that have a need to coordinate

• Responsible for a shippable increment of product at the end of a Sprint.

• May need experienced architects, QA Leaders, members of the Product Ownership Team, and other operational skill sets

• Meet daily in the Scaled Daily Scrum (SDS)

The Scrum of Scrums

13

• Ensures that impediments are visible and removed

• Improves the effectiveness of the Scrum of Scrums.

• Spreads and standardizes knowledge

• Discuses and resolves dependencies

• Could be one of the teams’ SM

• Coordinates priorities among Teams’ Product Owners

• Align backlog priorities with Stakeholder

• Could be one of the teams’ PO

• Same responsibilities of the PO but at scale:

• Sets a strategic vision for the whole SoS.

• Creating a single, prioritized backlog of larger items for the

team’s PO to decompose

• Release planning for the SoS.

• Create a minimal, uniform “Definition of Done” that

applies to all teams.

• Resolve dependencies raised by the teams.

• Decide upon and monitors metrics

• Leads the MetaScrum event if there is no CCPO

• Owns the Transformation

• Final Stop for impediments

• Measures and improves the quality of Scrum in the organization to build capability for business agility

• Must have a CPO, a SM and a transparent backlog.

• Members include leaders who can change company policy without having to ask permission [ex. COO, CIO, CTO]

18

EAT

• Acts as the PO for the entire organization

• Made up of CCPOs and Executives

• Owns the organizational vision

• Sets the strategic priorities

• Aligning all the teams around common goals

• Meets at least once per Sprint with key stakeholders at the MetaScrum Event (PB review)
