What is standard-based assessment?

An approach that compares students’ performances to the standards, rather than comparing them with other students.

CRITERION-REFERENCED

NORM-REFERENCED

What is standard-based assessment?

The measurement of students’ learning performance according to predetermined educational content and performance standards (Sana Rafiq, 2008).

The standards define the skills and knowledge content which will need to be mastered by each student in a certain time frame.

Learning Area Standard

Key Stage Standards

What is standard-based assessment?

Assessment is aligned to the attainment of the students’ defined skills or competencies.

x + 3 = 12

y + 3 = 12

x2 + x + 3 = x2 +12

x2 + 3 = 12

Grade Level Standards

The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts and principles of patterns and algebra (sequences, series, polynomial equations, …)

• Classroom assessment is an ongoing process of identifying, gathering, organizing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information of what learners know and can do.

What is Classroom Assessment?

Two Types of Classroom Assessment

• Formative• Summative

When the cook tastes the soup, that’s formative; when the guests taste the soup, that’s summative.

Learning Standards

• Content Standards• Performance Standards• Learning Competencies• Concept Development

How are learners assessed in the classroom?

• Individual & Collaborative Formative Assessment

• Formative Assessment in Different Parts of the Lesson– Before– During– After

Examples of Formative Assessment – BEFORE the Lesson

Examples of Formative Assessment – DURING the Lesson

Example

Example

• Use 2, 3, 4, 5, +, and = to form an equation

• Each ‘character’ must be used only once

32 = 4 +5

Examples of Formative Assessment – AFTER the Lesson1. Checklists2. Discussion3. Games4. PeTas that emanate

from the lesson objectives

5. Practice exercises6. Short quizzes7. Written work

Summative Assessment• Individual & Collaborative Summative

Assessment• Components of Summative Evaluation

– Written Work (WW)– Performance Task (PT) – Quarterly Assessment (QA)

Components of Summative Assessment

Component When Given

Written Work (WW) At the end of the topic or unit

Performance Task(PT)

At the end of a lesson focusing on a topic/skill

Quarterly Assessment (QA)

Once, at the end of a quarter

Weight of the Components for Grades 1 to 10

PeTa #1 : “EAT’s an Ellipse!•You’re part of a group of food technologists and your objective is to come up with a food or set of foods that resembles the shape of an ellipse. A client has assigned a center for each group (Please refer to the table below). Based on that center, the group will think of their OWN equation and eventually come up with the vertices & foci. These important coordinates should then be made evident in the food to be presented (using flaglets, or other materials that don’t need to be edible). Note that there’s no need to show the Cartesian plane with all its quadrants.
