Robust workplace safety practices and procedures are essential to keep operations running smoothly
and efficiently while maintaining a safe working environment for employees. Regulatory bodies such as the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have been active in auditing facilities for compliance
and issuing citations and significant fines when violations are observed. Periodic equipment maintenance is
required to keep things running smoothly, calling for equipment to be shutdown before work is performed
and a lockout/tagout procedure is followed to ensure that the machine remains in a zero-energy state until
the maintenance crew has finished the job. A comprehensive lockout/tagout program must include: machine
specific procedures to bring equipment to a zero-energy state, a training curriculum for all employees in a
facility, and processes to maintain and adjust the program.
Key elements of a robust Safety System include the following:
• Awareness of workplace safety regulations • Training for all involved
• Identification of safety hazards • Availability of safety devices and equipment
• Procedures for bringing equipment to azero energy state

Safety System Considerations
In today’s environment, workplace safety is a key concern for all productionoperations. Managing these concerns and the associated energy sourcescan be challenging. Below are a few considerations as part of an overallsafety program:
• How do you ensure compliance with workplace safetyregulations (OSHA)?
• Do you have a training and certification program in place tokeep your workforce aware of the requirements?
• Are you familiar with the latest regulatory changes and/orupdates, (OSHA and NFPA)?
• Do you have a corporate safety policy that is clear, wellunderstood, and enforced by those that are involved?
• Does your Lockout/Tagout program take into account alltypes of energy? Energy sources include: electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, kinetic, and others.
• Do you have available to your employees the necessarysafety devices and equipment required for safe operations?
• Do you properly identify and communicate hazards withinyour infrastructure to employees?

Isolate electrical energy sources in a facility• Broad offering includes lockouts for circuit breakers, electric plugs and switches• Proper isolation of electrical energy sources eliminates the risk of shock hazard
or arc flash during maintenance or servicing of equipment
Disengage energy sources in a facility including mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, pneumatic and more
• Valves: gate valve, ball valve and pneumatic lockout devices• Application-specific kits ensure that electricians, contractors and maintenance
personnel have the necessary devices on-hand• Group lockbox and lockout stations
Create a visual workplace to ensure that hazards are properly identified• Safety signs and labels inform of hazardous conditions• Voltage markers, pipe markers, tapes, and letters/numbers• Broad selection of materials, colors, sizes, and legends are available
Design custom markers quickly and economically• Choice of pre-printed and on-demand labeling solutions• Rugged hand-held printers increase productivity when and where needed• Easy-Mark™ is an intuitive labeling software package for all of
your applications• Stainless and aluminum marker plates and tags, can be embossed or
laser etched to identify cables used in demanding environments
Leverage Panduit’s safety expertise to become compliant with workplace safetystandards (OSHA, ANSI, and NFPA)
• Lockout services establish a sustainable standard in an organization• Arc Flash services include a complete analysis of the electrical system
in a facility to limit exposure of arc flash hazards while providingup-to-date labeling
