Piero Taramasso, Manager of the Two-Wheel Michelin Motorsport Group
After all the hard work through the winter and the pre-season tests, now it’s time to get down to the competitive business of racing. Qatar is a unique event, with its own challenges, and we made a superb start to our return to MotoGP here last year, so we hope we can repeat those performances this time. The track can be very abrasive when the sand is blown on to the asphalt or very slippery
when humidity rises and this makes tyre choice a very important and demanding decision. This is the first time we will have the official choice of three front and rear slicks, so we will have the correct compounds for whatever condition the circuit is in. This race will also signal the first time that we have brought wet tyres to Qatar. It is hoped that if it does rain the riders will test conditions using the tyres we have available and see if it is safe to race. There has never been a wet race at Losail, so if it does rain and the riders agree to race, it could be an amazing spectacle under the lights.
22Slick tyres
For each grand prix weekend (free
practice, qualifying, warm-up and race),
riders have a total allocation of 22 slicks:
10 front slicks:
Up to five A-specification compounds
Up to five B-specification compounds
Up to 5 C-specification compounds
12 rear slicks:
Up to 6 A-specification compounds*
Up to 5 B-specification compounds
Up to 4 C-specification compounds
* *Riders participating in both Q1 and Q2
(a maximum of two competitors) will be
granted an additional A-specification slick
rear tyre – offering the optimum grip level
– after Q2. This means that these two riders
will have access to a maximum of seven
A-specification rear tyres and 13 rear slicks.
11Rain tyres
Riders have a total allocation of 11
rain tyres per grand prix weekend (free
practice, qualifying, warm-up and race):
5 front tyres:
Up to 4 A-specification compounds
Up to 2 B-specification compounds
6 rear tyres:
Up to 5 A-specification compounds
Up to 2 B-specification compounds
In instances where all of the free
practice sessions and at least one
qualifying session are declared ‘wet’, an
extra set of rain tyres will be allocated
to each rider. The new allocation will
therefore be composed of:
6 front rain tyres
(4 A-specification + 2 B-specification)
7 rear rain tyres
(5 A-specification + 2 B-specification)
Tread re-cutting is prohibited.
