Rumors quashed at the speed of light…or within an hour

At 1:35 EST, March 23, CNN.com reported that a USAF C-17 had crashed near Olney, Texas.

Within one minute, the story had bounced to Twitter.

Nine minutes later, the threads begin to pick up the story & distribute it.

Seventeen minutes later, the official voice of the AF on Twitter countered the CNN story.

In addition to engagement in the social sphere, the folks at our national press desk talked to CNN, AF

Times, etc, using more traditional media engagement tactics, i.e. phone & e-mail.

By 2:31 EST, 55 minutes after the initial report, the following was posted on CNN.com

And AF Times posted this at 3 PM

By 3:15 EST, the search confirmed

the rumor was false

We’ve established a response precedent.
