Rubber expansion jointsGeneral description of rubber expansion joints
Expansion joints are used in appli-ances, machinery, apparatus andpipe systems where space is limited:
■ to compensate for movement■ to compensate for expansion
caused by differences in tempera-ture
■ to reduce tension■ to absorb noise and vibration
transmission■ to compensate for ground, and
foundation settlement■ to compensate for pipeline
movement aboard ships■ as adapters to compensate for
installation inaccuracies■ as dismantling pieces for fittings■ as elastic sealing elements, where
pipelines pass through walls
Rubber expansion joints are used in avariety of industrial applications:
■ Machine engineering■ Domestic industry■ Processing plant engineering■ Power station technology■ Shipbuilding
STENFLEX® rubber expansion jointshave served with distinction for morethan 45 years. They are the preferredflexible pipe connection elements ofchoice in manufactured appliances, machinery, apparatus and piping en-gineering.

Universal rubber expansion jointsStructure:Rubber bellows with connection parts (flange or thread)
Movement absorption:Axial, lateral, angular and simultaneous movement absorption is possible. Uni-versal expansion joints with two bellows and a connecting pipe are used to ab-sorb large movement.
Fixed points:To absorb axial force a pipe’s fixed points must be robust. Pipe routing must becorrect.
Lateral rubber expansion joints:Structure:Rubber bellows with flanges and laterally movable restraints.Movement absorption:Lateral shift of the expansion joints is possible. The restraint absorbs axial re-action force and relieves the pressure on the pipe’s fixed points. In double jointsthe type of restraint allows for movement on one plane; in ball joints it allows forall-around movement. Lateral expansion joints with two bellows and a connect-ing pipe are used to absorb large movement.Fixed points:Only light fixed points are required to absorb force from lateral movement andfriction force.
Angular rubber expansion joints:Structure:Rubber bellows with flanges and hinge restraint. The rotating axis of the hinge re-straint is in the middle of the bellows.Movement absorption:Angular movement of the expansion joint is possible. The angular joints regulate adefined angular movement, absorb axial reaction force and relieve the pressure onthe pipe’s fixed points. We differentiate between angular expansion joints with a hinge (bellows’ angularmovement guided on one plane) and angular expansion joints with a cardan hinge restraint (bellows movement guided on two planes). Angular expansion joints withconnecting pipe are used to compensate large movements.Fixed points:Only light fixed points are required to absorb angular movement force and friction force.

The excellent features of STENFLEX®
rubber expansion joints include out-standing absorption of movementand good vibration damping proper-ties. Depending on the particular ex-pansion joint type, a maximum of theforces produced by the pipe internalpressure is absorbed by the specificdesign of the expansion joint itself, and not passed on to neighbouringsystem components.
Rubber expansion joints differ accord-ing to the following criteria:■ type (universal/lateral/angular ex-
pansion joints)■ pipe connection type (flange,
thread)■ rubber quality of the bellows (rated
to the media transported in thepipes)
■ bellows structure (rated to thepressure and temperature load)
Our expansion joints are deliveredready to install. Together with thestandard versions featured in the
catalogue, special versions can alsobe developed and produced on re-quest for special operating condi-tions. Connection parts (that deviatefrom DIN) such as ISO, ANSI, BS, VGand SAE standards etc. are also pos-sible.

Rubber bellows
Material qualitiesSTENFLEX® rubber bellows are madeof elastic synthetic elastomers. Theirwide range of industrial applicationsare covered with combinations of thefour standard elastomer qualitiesEPDM, CIIR, NBR and CR togetherwith tensile reinforcing elements.Elastomers are basic materials thatare processed by adding sulphur, fillers, plasticizers and aging protec-
tion agents to produce rubber com-pounds suitable for vulcanization.Under the influence of temperatureand pressure the vulcanizationprocess (cross linkage) converts therubber compounds into rubber grades– with their typical elastic properties.Material properties such as hardness, elasticity, tensile strength, tempera-ture resistance, etc., are rated to the
corresponding application. Docu-ments detailing media resistance ofthe rubber grades are available on re-quest.
StructureSTENFLEX® rubber bellows havebeen optimized by calculation andverified by experimentation to pro-duce highly elastic pressure-resistantbellows with flow contours to meetdemanding absorption tasks.
Rubber bellows have a three-ply wallstructure:
■ inner ply (core) of medium-resis-tant rubber compound
■ intermediate ply of rubber com-pound with tensile elements for re-inforcement
■ outer ply (cover layer) of weather-proof rubber compound
The arrangement of the tensile rein-forcing elements is ascertained bycalculation and experimentation toensure that the force of pressure with-in the bellows can be absorbed. Apermanent bond exists between theembedded tensile reinforcing ele-ments and the rubber material.
The rubber grades used for the inner-and outer ply are empirically definedrubber compounds rated to certainproperties (media resistance, ozoneresistance, UV resistance, elasticity,wear-proof characteristics, etc.)

FlangesFlanges for rubber expansion joints inthe series A, AR, AS, B, E, G, GR-SAER and RS have a specially turnedgroove designed to accommodatethe rubber rim. They are fitted in a ro-tating position at the bellows to sim-plify mounting to the pipeline.
STENFLEX® rubber expansion jointsin the series C, D, and W have press-on retaining flanges.
The flanges have a stabilizing collaron the side facing the bellows (mould-ed bead or welded rim). This stabi-lizes the rubber bellows and ensurescompliance with safety spacing be-tween the ends of the screws and therubber bellows throughout the entirerange of pressure and movement. Thepurpose is to eliminate the risk ofdamage to the rubber bellows causedby the screw ends. Special flangesare fitted with stabilizer rings.
Standard screws can be used be-cause the flanges are drilled forthrough-bolts according to EN 1092(DIN 2501). Other pitch circles and

Restraints are used for lateral and an-gular expansion joints. The restraintsabsorb the axial reaction force pro-duced by internal pressure. Even so,the connected pipe must be equippedwith light fixed points to absorb mo-mentum force. The precise rating and
the material strength values at +50 °C.Reduced strength values are taken in-to consideration at higher tempera-tures.
Tie rod restraintsThere are two types of tie rod re-straints for lateral rubber expansionjoints:■ Outer restraints to absorb reaction
force from internal pressure (e.g. type A-2, AR-2, AS-2, B-2, R-2)
■ Outer and inner restraints to ab-sorb reaction force from internalpressure and vacuum (e.g. type A-4, AR-4, AS-4, B-4).
The tie rods in the flange ears for thelateral movement are carried■ by sound damping rubber sockets
up to DN 150■ by spherical washers and conical

Hinge restraintsAngular rubber expansion joints areequipped with oval flanges and weld-ed hinge restraints that consist ofjoint bars and bolts.
The hinge restraints of unalloyed steelare coated with anti-corrosion primer.Stainless steel parts are used to satisfy tougher corrosion protectionrequirements. Other materials andforms of corrosion protection (hot-dipgalvanizing, special varnish, coating, etc.,) are available on request.
STENFLEX® rubber expansion jointscan be equipped with vacuum sup-porting rings, internal guide sleeves, outer protective covers, protectivehoods or protective tubes.
Accessories
Vacuum supporting ringsDepending on diameter and type,STENFLEX® rubber expansion jointsare used for light to medium negativepressure. Vacuum supporting ringsare fitted to the inner surface of thebellows convolutions for greater neg-ative pressures (vacuum). As a rule, the supporting rings aremade of stainless steel up to DN 1000;for DN 1050 and larger, rubber-coveredsteel rings are used.
Guide sleevesNormally internal guide sleeves arenot required to reduce flow resistancebecause STENFLEX® rubber expan-sion joints have a streamlined innersurface with large transition radii (flowlines).
However, abrasive media or high flowvelocities (see diagram) with high-fre-quency vibrations or turbulence (e.g.behind a pump) require that internalguide sleeves are installed to protectthe rubber structure.
As a rule, the internal guide sleevesare made of stainless steel and are fit-ted with a flared flange. This seals theinternal guide sleeve on the one sidedirectly to the sealing face of the rub-ber bellows; on the other side of theflared flange an additional seal mustbe used against the counter flange.
In the case of purely axial movement, cylindrical guide sleeves are used. Forlateral and/or angular movement, conical internal guide sleeves are fit-ted (tapering cross section).

Double hinge restraint with weldedstraps and bolts (lateral expansionjoint)
Telescopic internal guide sleeves areonly used in special cases.
Being aware of the flow direction isvery important when installing expan-sion joints with internal guide sleeves.
For flow rates, above thecurve, it is advisable to installinternal guide sleeves to pro-tect the bellows. The dataare of indicative nature.Nominal diameter

Protective coversSTENFLEX® protective covers for ex-pansion joints are used where specialoperating conditions make it neces-sary to protect the expansion jointfrom external effects, or where ad-verse operating conditions and dan-gerous flow media make it necessaryto protect the environment with apreventive splash-guard.
Application:As protective cover to prevent flamepenetration up to +800 °C for up to 30 minutes at a medium temperature of+80 °C, to maintain full operational abili-ty of the expansion joint over this period.
When used aboard ships the protec-tive cover together with STENFLEX®
rubber expansion joints complies withthe requirements of the classificationagencies.
However, the best solution is to useour special type AS which is flame-proof.

Compensation systems with angular expansion joints
Expansion absorption depends onthe centre-to-centre spacing L of theexpansion joints and the maximum de-flection angle α. It is calculated accord-ing to the following formula:
The deflecting pipeline must have suf-ficient play in the guide bearing to al-low for the radian measure. It is calcu-lated as follows:
L =/2
sin α /2 = L · sin α
h = L (1–cos α)
