Programme and Performance Notes - Bring Him Home (from Les Misérables)
Based on the Victor Hugo's 1862 French novel of the same name, Claude-Michel Schönberg's musical Les Misérables is one of the most successful musicals of all time. Set in early-nineteenth century France, the musical features a number of different plot lines that intertwine. These include an escaped prisoner's quest for redemption despite being tracked by police, a mother's struggle to provide for her child despite the child's abusive caretakers, and a group of young revolutionaries fighting for their country's freedom. The musical was originally written in French and premiered in Paris in 1980. It was later adapted for the West End and opened in October 1985 and is currently the longest-running musical on the West End. The original Broadway production opened in March 1987 and closed in 2003, but its revival is currently running on Broadway. Les Misérables was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won eight, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor (Michael Maguire as Enjolras), Best Featured Actress (Frances Ruffelle as Éponine), Best Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Lighting Design . The musical is unique because it is a sung-through musical, meaning all of the text is sung and there is no speaking, which is more similar to an operetta than a traditional musical. "Bring Him Home" is a poignant and lyrical song sung by the main character Jean Valjean in the second act. It is his prayer to God, and he asks for God's protection over Marius, the leader of the revolutionaries, as they sleep the night before the French Revolution. This arrangement is an excerpt of the song. It is a short, sight-readable arrangement that teachers and students and perform in lessons, classes, and in performance settings. Bring Him Home will be performed in Masterworks 3 by Canadian soprano Rebecca Caine.
