We hope that all new residents will come to the Parish Center to register.
Adult Christian Initiation If you are interested in exploring the Catholic faith or completing your initiation into the Church please call
the Parish Center.
Infant Baptism Preparation If you wish to arrange a baptism at Sacred Heart Church, please contact the Parish Center at 516-379-1356 X10. One of our baptism coordinators will be happy to arrange a
time to meet with you. This conversation provides an opportunity to discuss the Baptism ceremony as well as
set a date for the sacrament. Ideally, both Godparents should be practicing Catholics. We will review the
procedures for the sacrament and you will be able to fill out all the necessary paperwork. Baptisms are held on
the first and third Sunday of each month at 2pm in the church. First time parents need to attend a Baptism
Class. They are held on the last Monday of each month in the church at 7:30pm. Crying babies welcome!
Godparents are encouraged but not required to attend.
Sacrament of Matrimony Please contact the Parish Center at least one year in advance of the intended date of the wedding. A priest of the parish will interview you, set the wedding date and help you
register for the required marriage preparation program (Pre-Cana).
Sacrament of Reconciliation A priest is available each Saturday at 4:00 P.M. in the Church. Please don’t hesitate to call a priest at the Parish Center for an appointment for Confession at another time.
Sacraments for the Homebound If you or a family member are not able to attend Mass due to temporary or chronic illness, and would like to receive the Sacraments of Communion, Reconciliation and/
or Anointing of the Sick please call the Parish Center.
Child Protection Program All adults volunteering as liturgical ministers and in other ministries are required to have a Background Check. To attend a session register at www.virtus.org

CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS Regular meeting Monday May 20th
7:30 pm in the teachers lounge.
Many thanks to all of our parishioners and all the folks outside of our parish that came out and made the selfless sacrifice of donating
blood on Friday, May 10.
We had a grand total of 100 units, which was way more than we were even hoping
for. A huge thank you to my co-chairperson Ed Ronan and all of the Knights that donated and/or loaned a helping hand. To Barbara,
Phyllis, Pat and Elena another huge thank you!
Did you know that each unit donated has the
potential to save three lives?
“We must be the change we wish to see in the world” - Mahatma Gandhi
Hoping to see even more of you at our next
blood Drive in October.

Today’s Gospel Reading John 13:31-33a,34-35 Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment: love one another.
Background on the Gospel Reading
Today's Gospel again comes from the Gospel of John.
John's Gospel does not include an institution of the Eucharist narrative; instead, Jesus washes his disciples' feet. Immediately after, Jesus predicts his betrayal by Judas. Today's Gospel follows that prediction. It can be read as a continuing explanation of Jesus' act of washing his disciples' feet. It begins with the announcement that this is the moment when the Son of Man will be glorified. This theme continues throughout John's Passion. Jesus will be glorified in his death on the cross and in his Resurrection, and the disciples will glorify Jesus in the love they show.
John's Gospel does not present a sentimental view of love. This is a type of love that is shown in service and sacrifice. It is difficult to choose to love when faced with hatred and anger. Jesus tells the disciples that all will know that they are his disciples because of the love they show for one another. This description of the early Christian community will be repeated in the Acts of the Apostles: “See how they love one another.” Christian love is the hallmark of Christianity. We see it lived in the witness of the martyrs. We see it in the example of the lives of the saints. We see it in the holy women and men who live and love daily, making small and large sacrifices for others.

Anointing of the Sick after the 12:00 Noon Mass on Sunday, May 19th.
Anyone in need of being anointed is invited to receive the Sacrament when it is offered.
This Sacrament brings the blessings of God’s comfort, peace and grace, offering strength
and the assurance that one is facing the illness in union with Christ. Who should be
anointed?
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is for baptized Christians whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age.
It should be celebrated at the beginning of the illness or during the illness and should
not be delayed. So, the condition should be more serious than just a cold or some
normal illness, but the old thinking about waiting until one is near death is no longer
proper for this Sacrament, either.
Also, it is appropriate to be anointed before undergoing any kind of surgery, or when one has received a diagnosis and will be
undergoing a course of treatment for something significant.
“Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the
grace of the Holy Spirit.” ―Rite of Anointing of the Sick
****************************** If the announced intention at Mass is for
your intention, or if you have memorialized the bread and wine, and you would like to
carry those offerings forward at the Presentation of the Gifts during Mass,
please be sure to let the ushers know this before the Mass begins. They will be happy
to have you do this. If no one steps forward to specifically
request this, then they will select people from the assembly.

"The Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang meets on Monday nights at
7pm in the Cafeteria. Everyone
attending should bring a loaf of bread. Our sandwiches are
being donated to the Long Island Council of Churches in Freeport and to The Inn in Long Beach. We are also still collecting toiletry items for the Blessing Bags. We
make them up for distribution about once a month depending on how many
contributions are received. Your donation helps so much in enabling us to buy peanut butter, jelly, sandwich
bags and also gallon size bags for the Blessing bags. We also greatly appreciate
the many donations that are sent in by our wonderful parishioners! Maureen Paladino
