Reliance Industries demanded the highest possible level of security to achieve the maximum reliability and uptime forthe mission critical servers and other crucial IT equipment to be hosted at its new Navi Mumbai facility. Reliance alsorequired a Green solution that could deliver the desired level of power efficiency. The five story 2000 sqm datacenterbuilt to accommodate the data halls is situated remotely, approximately 0.7 km from the critical power and coolingplant. The Navi Mumbai facility is also situated in an environmentally challenging location that experiences hightemperatures, high humidity and heavy rainfall. The Diesel Rotary UPS (DRUPS) solution from Hitec PowerProtection fully met the requirements of Reliance Industries as it provides a flexible and future-proof solution toaccommodate the ever growing and expanding needs of India’s largest company. It is important to mention thatduring the evaluation process Hitec demonstrated to Reliance that its equipment had been specifically developed tomeet the needs of the Indian market and that it would operate reliably and efficiently to deliver secure power to thecritical IT and cooling loads. By combining Hitec’s efficient, economic and environmentally conscious principles withthe excellent after-sales support from Hitec’s Indian partner Hi-Rel, Reliance has chosen the most suitable andeffective power solutions for this facility.

Project requirementsThe main objective was to design a datacenter facility to be Tier IV compliant. A Tier IV solution is the most resilientapproach possible from the uptime institute and it demands the incorporation of duplicate and physically separateoperating systems to ensure complete fault tolerance and concurrent maintainability (99.995% data hall uptime). Torealize this Hitec installed two completely independent Medium Voltage Hitec diesel rotary UPS systems to a totalresilience level of N+N. There is total system isolation up to the point of power delivery for 3 MVA of secure power. Thestand alone fuel capacity of the system was required to be at least 72 hours. The project counted for many challengesone being the 30 meter high (chimney) exhaust system that would be needed for the individual DRUPS and connectingthe vertical radiators to provide sufficient cooling air.
