s promised, the Month of May (Bicycle Month) proved to be extremely busy for EBC members. Beginning
on Wednesday the 15th the Ride of Silence traveled through downtown Evansville co-sponsored for the fourth year by the Evansville Area Trails Coalition and Evansville Bicycle Club. The evening weather was perfect and in attendance was Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. Friday the 17th was declared “Bike to Work Day” by the Mayor with many commuters waiving their autos for bicycle transport that day. Saturday found many EBC members riding the 7thannual Wurst Ride along the river bottoms and then traversed to the Marrs Hill Elementary School to assist in the Bike rodeo sponsored by the Marrs Hill Township Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. Then to finish up the week, the 2nd annual “Streets Alive” festival was celebrated on Sunday with the approximately 3,000 attendees riding skating, skateboarding and walking the one mile Fulton Street strip which was closed to auto traffic that afternoon. Dave Gwaltney of Evansville who is a lover of bicycles of a different stroke brought his “Ordinary”, circus mini and slyder bikes to demonstrate to the public how these bikes work. The EBC’s bicycle powered smoothie machine returned for a second year and dished out 326 various flavored smoothies before succumbing to machine tolerance breakdown. Mayor Winnecke traversed the EBC rodeoskills course riding his new bicycle and gave the course a “thumbs up.”
Gary Gardner, Rusty Yeager and Dave Heng rode TOSRV (Tour of the Scioto River Valley) the weekend of May 11 & 12 along with 2,000 other dedicated riders in what were described as “somewhat” windy and “cool”. On June 1, Darlene Wefel and Jane Buchta will be taking off for a week trek riding the Natchez Trace Club Ride. They will travel
to Natchez, Mississippi and then begin cycling to the final destination: Nashville, TN with hopeful arrival on the 8th.
COME OUT to Garvin Park on Monday June 3rdto participate in the Press Conference to be held @ 11:00 a.m. to promote the River City Bicycle Classic. Please arrive fifteen minutes early. Bring your bikes and helmets with a possible a shot on being on TV!
Can you help out? On June 8,the second annual River City Bicycle Classic will be held at Garvin Park and EBC is in need of assistance. As a club, we will be hosting a “skills” bicycle rodeo (10:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m.) plus being in charge of the “kids” races that will begin near 1:00 pm. Please arrive by 9:45 a.m. as registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. There will be four categories of racers; 4 year old w/training wheels, 4-6 yr. old cyclists, 7-9 future racers capping off with the 10-12 year old future racers. Serious racing begins thereafter with various men’s and women’s age categories and levels. Bring the family; enjoy a picnic for a wonderful day at the park.
The “Lose the Training Wheels” will return this year with a new title “I can ride”. This year the program will run through the week of July 15 through the 19th of July. EBC supports this event posting two scholarships and one bicycle. More to come in next month’s article.
I will look for you either at one of our events as a volunteer or on the road at one of our rides.
Cheers,
Parthur
