Progress Report on 10/31/07

• On October 31, 2007, a project progress report of the “RFID-based Property Room Management System” together with a tour of the UH “RFID and Sensor Research Laboratory” was held at the UH campus.

• A proposed solution for the HPD weapon storage was discussed.

System Architecture• The proposed RFID-based Property Management

System for high security item, such as weapon, includes four components:– Passive RFID to be tagged on high security item (guns,

drug, etc.) for property identification and event triggering.– Passive RFID tag to be attached on the back of

employer’s badge for property chain of custody monitoring.– Multiple IP-based Cameras for capturing room object

movements.– Fingerprinting Reader for personal identification and

verification.

• Shelves similar to one used in the HPD property room were assembled at the UH Lab as showing in the next two slides.

• The following system testing were conducted using the system mockup: – Placement of the High security items in shelves

for efficient reading.– Arrangement of the readers for optimal read rate.– Decrease the error probability

HPD Weapon Storage 3D Layout

• A 3D layout for the weapon storage room of HPD was conducted using Google’s SketchUp software, as showing on the next slide.

• Locations of multiple RFID readers and antennas, proposed by the project team, were also showing on the 3D layout for system feasibility and validity study.

Design Modifications of Original Proposed Solution

• The proposed system was modified based on the feedback from the progress report to the HPD staff on 10/31/07 as follows:– No passive RFID tag will be attached to the back of

employer’s badge.– Instead, Fingerprint Access System will include an

internal camera for weapon chain of custody monitoring.– RFID reader and antennas will only be installed at

storage room’s checkpoint (i.e., gate entrance).– Handheld RFID readers will be used to locate individual

weapon on storage shelves.
