Q&A with Bird Apparel by: Anita Condron Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself

A: My name is Anita Condron and for the last four years I have been designing and producing the clothing and accessories line Bird Apparel. I was born in Montreal Canada, and raised in the GTA, and now live with my husband and two kids in a not so small village just east of the city. I studied fashion design at George Brown College and worked on and off in the fashion/textile industry before starting a family and my clothing line.

Q: How did you get interested in designing?

A: I think its in my genes! I’m the granddaughter of a very talented seamstress and tailor. Growing up I was exposed to sewing and designing clothing at a young age by my grandparents who made

everything from coats and suits to curtains for their many loyal customers including moi! They taught me how to sew, and seeing them transform fabric into fancy dresses and suits, made me want to create my own.

Q: How long have you been designing for?

A: I have been designing clothes from about the age of ten. Sewing and pinning fabric together and wearing it out as skirts, dresses and pj’s. How- ever, I have been designing more wearable clothing for the last ten years and started my business and label Bird Apparel in 2007.

Q: Where do your inspirations for your designs come from? A: My inspiration comes from many places and things and is always changing. A major source of inspiration is the fabric itself, like specific colours or patterns as well as lines, shapes and texture. I love walking around the fabric stores and seeing all the possibilities. I don’t generally plan anything out, but I always have a few pieces in mind for a collection. Some- times they work out and sometimes they lead in other directions, It happens pretty organically.

Q: What is your favorite piece from any of your collections that you have created?

A: Every season I have one or two favorites, so it’s hard for me to pin point the one that I liked best. The one that I wear most often from my F/W 11 collection is my swoop tunic/ dress, and the one that I am loving alot S/S 11 this versatile beach dress/tunic.

Q: Do you have a favorite designer? If so who?

A: No I don’t have a favorite designer. I admire so many, that I can’t possibly narrow it down. Right now I’m loving so many young and talented independent Canadian designers.

Q: What are your near and future goals?

A: My near goals are to revamp and update my website and add a line of children’s clothing (my daughter has been bugging me for this!) and more accessories. For my future goals, I’d love to be able to support my family

through my clothing line, have my own studio/ shop and live or vacation often in a warm country by the sea with my family.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring designers?

A: I’m not sure I’m really qualified to give advice. The best thing is to believe in yourself and what your creating. Experiment and try new things. Use quality fabrics. Promote yourself through social media (I’m still working on this one). Collaborate with other talented people like photographers, hairstylists, and make-up artists. Have fun!
