Pastor’s Pondering A Time to Weep
I don’t think any of us knew what to expect
when the pandemic hit and shelter-in-place be-
came the new norm. I don’t think any of
us expected life to change so much. When it began, many of us
believed that when everything was over, the pandemic, the
“murder hornets” (haven’t heard much about them lately), the toilet
paper shortages, the plague of Cicadas to come, the Sahara dust,
and then the riots, we as a nation could return to “normal.” We
would go back to our baseball games, our family reunions, and
our church. We would go back, and it would be just as it was.
Yet, what we are finding is that “normal” no longer exists. The
pandemic has changed us, and we must prepare ourselves for
the changes that have come.
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the church we worshiped
in on March 15th will not be the same one that we will worship in on
July 12th. Our sanctuary will look different. There will be plexi-
glass shields in front of the pulpit, communion table, and singer’s
stand. Pews will be closed off, bulletins will mark where you can
sit, and X’s will mark where you cannot. You may have to sit in a
pew other than your favorite one as we fill in from front to back on
Sundays. Our order of worship will be different with no spoken re-
sponses, no congregational singing, and no choir. Our offering will
be placed in plates as we leave the building, row by row. Social/
fellowship time will not be held. There can be no hugs and no
handshakes. We will come in to worship and then leave when it is
over. Masks will be required.
One day the choir will be back in the choir loft. One day the
plexi-glass will be put away. One day the masks will not be
necessary. Until then, we must live in this changed place and
accept the reality that this change is hard. In fact, all change is
hard because it involves loss. It is okay to grieve the changes that
will take place in our church and in the worship that we hold so
dear. So often people think that grief is only appropriate when
someone dies, so we deny our grief over change because we think
that to engage in it would be self-indulgent, a pity party. There is
nothing wrong with grieving all that has changed in this time; there

Regathering Guidelines The Regathering Team is comprised of the
following representatives: Pastor Burnetta
Armour, Bruce Morgan, Elaine Wiegert, Dave
Arvold, Kim Ciriello, Judy Winski, Jean Kelly,
Jim Crawford and Judy Parsons.
The Committee met by Zoom on June 4 and
June 11, and in-person on June 18th, with the
addition of a representative of our addiction
groups, to finalize these Guidelines for Session
approval. A survey of the congregation was
taken during early June, and the Guidelines the
team is presenting took into consideration the
results of the survey. Our recommendations
are based on the recommended Covid-19
Guidelines established by NEGA Presbytery.
The team has always thought in terms of
a phased reopening of the church facilities,
beginning with worship and progressing through
other uses of the building.
REGATHERING DATE:
July 12 for resuming worship
in the Sanctuary.
Prior to regathering
Deep Cleaning of Sanctuary, Narthex, and
adjoining areas of church.
Hymnals, Bibles, name tags, and other
similar materials will be removed from the
Sanctuary and Narthex and stored for future
use.
Install Plexiglas shields at pulpit, communion
table, and area where singers may
perform during worship.
Order disposable masks and sanitation
station for use by congregants.
MOVING FORWARD
Regathering the Church
(continued on page 3)
is nothing wrong with grieving that for a period
of time church will not be the same. It is not
self-indulgent; it is not a pity party. It is the
honest cry of our hearts to God.
One of the things I love about the Psalms
is the honesty of them. The Psalmist never
minced words with God. He expressed his
anger, his sadness, and his hurt to God,
expecting God to hear even if he didn’t feel like
God did. Take some time to read the Psalms.
Let their honesty inspire your own prayers.
Grieve for the changes in frank words to our
God who is big enough to handle all our human
emotions. Speak to God candidly because God
already knows how you feel.
The writer of Ecclesiastes
wrote that there is a time to
weep and a time to laugh
(Ecc. 3:4). Take time to weep.
It is okay. God hears your weeping, and God is
big enough to handle all your grief for what was
and what is and what will come.

Point of View Jean Kelly
Going the Extra Mile According to The Free Dictionary, to go
the extra mile means to go above and beyond
what is expected, to make a bigger effort than
is required, to exert special energy in order to
accomplish something. The idiom go the extra
mile is derived from the New Testament. In the
book of Matthew, chapter five verse forty-one,
Jesus says, "Whoever compels you to go one
mile, go with him two”.
In the time I’ve known Pastor Burnetta, she
has always had a smile on her face, genuine
warmth in her voice, and a positive approach to
any concerns or problems I’ve shared with her.
Our church is so blessed to have Pastor B,
James, and Collin as part of our family. Since
her arrival in Cleveland, just a few short months
ago, she has faced many challenges. Broad-
casting from her spare room or porch, week
after week, she has uplifted us, kept our spirits
high and our faith strong during these difficult
times. Not only has she gone the extra mile for
all of us, she has run a marathon. And . . .
Thank You Pastor B!
Special Thanks . . . A Big Thank You for keeping us upbeat and
encouraged and for bringing us together during
these difficult times.
- Tom and Linda Leslie
You told us early on that you loved us as a
congregation. Now you have put that love into
action with the extra effort you have made to
keep us connected to the church and to each
other. As we regather, may our love for each
other be stronger than ever.
- Rita and Bruce Morgan
Thank you Burnetta for all you have done
since being called to our church. It must be
SO hard to be in this position when you’d
hardly got to know your new congregation.
You’ve done an amazing job, I love your
sermons and am excited you’re preaching
on the Old Testament. - Mary Smith
While Bob and I are in Florida, we miss our
church family and the opportunity to worship
together, more than you know. We are so
grateful for the opportunity to share in the
services via Facebook during most of the year.
During our quarantine, we especially needed
the connection with our church and we are so
blessed to have you, Burnetta, as our spiritual
leader, and we thank you for all you have done
to keep us all spiritually fed, and connected to
each other. Thank you also to Dave, James,
Clair, and Kim, for adding their talents, and to
Lindalee for our weekly prayer meetings. Bob
just expressed a desire for the men to have
some kind of Zoom meeting so they too, can
visit vicariously.
- Penny and Bob Murdoch
Pastor Burnetta, you have shown leadership
skills and maturity beyond your years. We
thank you for all you have done for us during
this unprecedented time.
- Judy and Ron Winski
Judy and I would like to express our sincere
gratitude for being there, in your home and in
the sanctuary, for us throughout the pandemic
and, more recently, the racial unrest in our na-
tion. Your messages are topical and inspiring
and a daily reminder of our commitment to
Christ and His teachings.
- Judy and Charles Massingale
Thank you Pastor Burnetta for your enthusi-
asm and willingness to lead our congregation in
this diffcult time. We appreciate you and we
are glad you accepted God’s call to be with us.

Burnetta, Pastor, preacher, minister, wife,
mother, teacher, friend, gift from God, loved by
all, awesome lady. We are so blessed and
grateful that God sent you to FPC. Thank you
for shepherding your flock during this difficult
time. We will get through this together and be
stronger. I shudder to think what would have
happened to FPC if you had not become our
pastor. We have been truly blessed.
- Becky and Tony Clark
Burnetta, Thank you for jumping in to your
new role as our Pastor during these crazy
times. You have not skipped a beat. Your
positive spirit, enthusiasm for embracing the
times, and finding the joy amid the uncertainty
has kept our family going. Even with your
challenges of being our new pastor, home-
schooling Collin, James having a new job, and
both of you having to work from home, you
have added a weekly online bible study and de-
votions, three nights a week. You amaze us.
We have enjoyed the bible studies and the de-
votionals are so genuine and uplifting. It has
been a wonderful way for us to learn more
about your personal faith journey and to get to
know you better. Thank you for everything.
We are so blessed to have you as part of our
church family.
- Kim, Dave, TC & Zack Ciriello
Burnetta, It seems to me that you -- like
Queen Esther -- "have come to the kingdom
(our church) for such a time as this!" Your
contagious enthusiasm for learning, and teach-
ing encourage us to be like Paul's Berean
believers, "who received the word with all
eagerness, examining the scriptures daily.”
Your presence and attitude are a regular
blessing and inspiration to me. Thank you so
much for responding to God's call to lead us in
our desire to learn and grow and serve.
Gratefully, - Betty Sloop
Burnetta, When you came to First Presby-
terian Church in Cleveland, none of us had
any idea of how these last three months would
unfold. After being with us only six weeks, we
had to close the church doors for the safety of
our congregation, but thanks to your leader-
ship, we didn’t close the church. You helped us
find ways to be together virtually and we are so
grateful to you for not only bringing us together
for worship, but also for bringing us together
during the week for evening devotionals and
Bible Study. These evening gatherings have
become a new routine in our family.
You accepted all of this added responsibility
with such energy and grace. Thank you for
your leadership during this most unusual and
unprecedented time. - Elaine and Hans
Dear Burnetta, Thank you for being a
wonderful pastor during this trying time and
keeping us old folks "in the Word." You have
gone above and beyond what is expected of a
pastor, and, for that, we are so glad to call you
"Pastor", for you truly are. Love in Christ,
- Gypsy and Betty Smith
Thank you Burnetta for going above and
beyond the call of duty in this unprecedented
hard time. Thank you for being real, sharing
your thoughts, life, and family with us. Thank
you for helping us feel loved and accepted.
Thank you for showing the grace of Jesus at
every turn. You are a keeper!
- Melody
It is hard to know where to begin because
her Sermons, Devotionals, Bible Studies, etc.
have meant so much to me in this time we are
having to be apart. Her words of encourage-
ment help to keep me going. She does not
have to go to all the trouble of setting things up

We still live in challenging times and the July
Mission of the Month continues to be the White
County Food Pantry. In addition to non-perish-
able food items, there's a great need for things
like Laundry Detergent, Paper Products, Per-
sonal Hygiene items, Pet Food, and monetary
donations. Plans are in the works for holding a
Drive-In Pantry Party towards the end of July,
collaborating with the community and our

Since January you have proven to be our
Pastor Burnetta, those trips to the hospital and
homes were deeply appreciated by specific
individuals, however they affirmed my feelings
of the PNC’s call.
Via “technology” (that some resent) you have
allowed us to get to know your family better. I’m
thankful to allow interruptions to not frustrate
your messages! (Must be akin to crying babies,
or folks nodding off).

Pastor Burnetta, Thank you for working
so hard to draw us in to community at a time
when it would be very easy for us to lose touch
with each other. And thank you for being a "non
-anxious presence" with us so that we all can
relax and believe that "all will be well." And
thank you for having a delightful and encourag-
ing sense of humor through it all. You are defi-
nitely the best Metha-Catha-Christa-Bapta-
Terian pastor that any church could ask for
and you are ours! Praise the Lord!
- Bonnie and Dick Frost
What a way to start your journey with our
church family. You have been an amazing an-
chor to ground our church during this unique

family join our family.

Burnetta, What a blessing you’ve been dur-
ing this time of uncertainty in our lives. You’ve
always been there for us and the rest of the
congregation during these trying times. God
has blessed us with your presence and leader-
ship and we are truly thankful. If you ever need
help with the cabin in the woods, let us know.
May God Bless you Always.

Introduction for Lectio Divina:
This year the focus of our PW NEGA
activities is prayer. At the PW Coordinating
Team Retreat in January, we learned and
practiced several different types of prayer,
among them, Lectio Divina. Lectio Divina can
be practiced using scripture, but it can also be
used to meditate on the text of hymns. During
this first stage of reopening, perhaps we can
practice Lectio Divina while we are listening
to the hymns during worship.
Intention: Experience a word from God in God’s Word.
The Exercise:
Step One: Silencio
After choosing a Scripture and placing it
nearby, become still and quiet within. Silently
turn all your thoughts and desires over to God.
Let go of all concerns, worries and agendas.
Just be for a few minutes.
Step Two: Lectio
Read your short passage slowly and care-
fully, either aloud or silently. Reread it. Be alert
to any word, phrase, or image that seems to
have energy for you. It could be a word that
invites you, a phrase that puzzles you, or an
image that intrigues you. Wait for this word,
phrase or image to speak to you; do not rush
or force it. Read the passage as many times
as you like.
Step Three: Meditatio
Take whatever word, phrase, or image from
your Scripture passage that has energy for you
and allow yourself to ponder it in your heart. In
the phrase, we ruminate over our chosen text.
Repeat it to yourself like a mantra. Allow this
word, phrase, or image to interact with your
deepest self – your thoughts, desires, memo-
ries. Let it speak to your life.
Step Four: Oratio
Let your soul be deeply in prayer, allowing
God to transform you through the word, phrase,
or image from Scripture. Let your feelings be
open and honest with God. Let your heart be in
dialogue with God. Consider how this word,
phrase, or image connects with your life today.
How is God present to you in it?
Step Five: Comtemplatio
Rest silently in the presence of God. Move
beyond words, phrases, or images. Enjoy the
freedom that comes in contemplation.
If you desire, write about this prayer experi-
ence in a journal. What is your word, phrase, or
image? What does God reveal to you in it?
What does it have to say about your life right
now?

We have made it through to July. Wow!
The “Regathering Team” is working hard to
make a safe transition for our church family to
return to in-person worship while continuing our
online presence. You will be receiving detailed
information closer to the reopening so please be
on the lookout for it.
If you haven’t already accepted your invite to
REALM, please watch your email for another
invite or contact the church office for assistance.
Realm is how you will be able to register to
attend the in-person worship, as attendance will
be limited due to the Covid19 restrictions.
Your Deacons continue to reach out to the
members via phone calls, messages, texts, and
social media. I am so proud of our church family
for supporting each other and our community
through the past several months.
The congregation connections committee
made the remainder of the Synod Transforma-
tion grant fund to aid NEGA Congregations in
providing "distance ministry" during the Covid-19
pandemic and beyond. Each congregation was
eligible to receive a grant up to $750.00.
FPC applied for and received the $750.00
toward the purchase of a computer with better
capabilities of
providing us live
streaming. The
team had been
working with a
laptop about 10
years old. That old laptop will be put to use
by Burnetta and other ministry areas.
Thanks to David Arvold for his researching
and purchasing a new Mac Book to use for our
‘Facebook Live’ posts. This new computer,
from a grant from the Presbytery for Covid19
technology improvements, helps keep our
online presence strong.
David also spent countless hours researching
software applications to help enhance our online
worship presence. David Arvold and Kim Ciriello
have worked together to enhance the virtual
worship experience. Yes, there have been
hiccups along the way, but there always are,
especially when technology and humans are
involved.
It is our hope that the worship experience
has been helping everyone get through our
shelter-in-place experience. Thank you, also,
to Judy Winski for helping our church with the
application for this grant.
