AAUW: COMMITMENTS AND GOALS

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has been empowering women as individuals and as a

community since 1881. For more than 130 years, we have worked together as a national grassroots organization to

improve the lives of millions of women and their families. Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than

170,000 members and supporters across the United States and over 800 college and university partners. AAUW is a

community of (a) national members who hold two-year or more advanced degrees from accredited institutions, (b)

branch members from nearly 1,000 branches in local communities across the country, and (c) students who are

currently enrolled in accredited institutions.

Our Mission: Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

Value Promise: By joining AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women and girls have a fair chance. Our Vision is Simple: We bring people together for the common goal of breaking through educational and economic barriers for women and girls. Diversity Statement: AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of sex, gender identity, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.

BRANCH VISION STATEMENT

AAUW San Jose will provide visible leadership to support all women and girls; vigorously recruit and retain a diverse membership; and focus on education, equity, and positive societal change.

ORGANIZATION AND OPERATIONS OF THE AAUW SAN JOSE BRANCH

HEADQUARTERS

The AAUW San Jose Branch has more than 300 members. The Branch owns a Craftsman-style house in Willow Glen known as

‘HQ’ or ‘Headquarters.’ This is where many events occur and where the Board of Directors, most committees, and many

interest groups hold their meetings. Maintenance and use of HQ is supervised by the Building and Properties Committee.

Rental of the upstairs office space offsets maintenance costs and allows member dues to be devoted to Branch programs.

LEADERSHIP Branch operations and the stewardship of its resources are the responsibilities of a Board of Directors. The Board consists of

nine (9) elected officers, the Immediate Past President, the Parliamentarian (as advisor), the Chair of the Building and Properties

Committee, and other officers appointed by the President as deemed necessary to carry out Branch functions. Branch members

also volunteer to chair committees, interest groups, and Community Action Projects (CAPs). The duties of these positions and

the rules guiding Branch operations can be found in the Bylaws (revised April 2017) and in the Policies and Procedures (revised

May 2015) which are available in the office at Headquarters.

AAUW SAN JOSE BRANCH MISSION-BASED PROJECTS AND PRIORITIES

The AAUW San Jose Branch addresses the AAUW mission of advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research through a

variety of Community Action Projects (CAPs) and committees.

8

EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY

Public Policy Committee: For more than a century AAUW has influenced legislative debate at the national, state and local levels, and has taken positions on fundamental issues of the day – educational, social, economic and political. AAUW encourages members to be involved in every level of the political process, from grassroots advocacy to running for office. AAUW CA complements the national AAUW Public Policy Program by identifying public policy priorities and choosing to promote or oppose specific bills being considered in the CA legislature. The AAUW San Jose Branch Public Policy Committee is charged with informing the Branch of these priorities and guiding them in effective participation in the legislative process. Our legislative priorities are education, economic security and civil rights. The committee has identified three specific goals of the AAUW mission that are facing significant opposition in the current political climate and from the new Administration: 1) gender and pay equity; 2) Title IX protection, especially with regard to campus sexual violence; and 3) affordable health care including reproductive health care. To support economic security we are also advocating policies that support a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. We will be not only a primary source of information for Branch members but also provide tools and opportunities for advocacy at our meetings and at Branch and community events. With the Branch’s Program Development Committee, College-University Relations Committee, Title IX interest group and relevant community organizations we will present programs which both inform and inspire participants to defend and promote AAUW’s mission and goals. Public Policy general meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month and Public Policy working sessions are held the third Tuesday of each month. All members are welcome at both meetings. Contact: Peg Carlson-Bowen

Tech Trek (CAP): A week-long science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) summer camp for 8th grade girls is

sponsored by AAUW. Our Branch sponsors girls chosen from targeted San Jose public middle schools. They attend Tech Trek

on the Stanford University campus for an exciting hands-on learning experience. The girls live the life of a college student,

interacting with women who model competence and mastery of STEM in their daily lives. Contact Michelle Lalljie

Financially Fit for Life (CAP): FFFL provides women and girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be financially fit for

life. We develop and present financial management programs that serve the larger community as well as our own Branch

members. This past year FFFL conducted an in-depth workshop “Paying for College” at the branch-sponsored Strong Girls,

Strong Women conference in San Jose. This workshop gives college aspirants the tools and information they need to pay for

their college education and minimize student debt. Targeting high school and college women, our “Money Matter$” program

gives them basic money and debt management skills. We take these programs to as many venues in the larger community as

possible. Every year we also present a program tailored to the interests of our Branch members. Last season’s program focused

on understanding and planning for retirement housing needs. Our purpose is to serve others but, in the process, we gain a

great deal of knowledge ourselves. Join us! We meet the 2nd Monday at 1:30 pm at headquarters. Contact Leslie Larson

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (CAP): Neighbors Helping Neighbors collaborates with local agencies and community groups to

provide hands-on help to the homeless, poor, and others in need in our community. Our projects have included sorting

food for Second Harvest, making blankets for Project Linus, providing cleaning supplies and a barbecue dinner at Family

Supportive Housing, donating Mother’s Day gift cards for women at Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, providing

supplies for school backpacks and collecting warm clothing for Santa Maria Urban Ministry, providing survival kits for the

homeless for Sacred Heart Community Services, and donating and sorting clothing at The Grateful Garment Project. Contact

Co-Chairs Sally Bailey (Director) or Karelle Cornwell.

Gifts for Teens (CAP): GFT fills and distributes 1,300 festive gift totes and duffel bags to homeless and low-income downtown

San Jose teenagers served by Home First, the Bill Wilson Center, Unity Care Group, and Sacred Heart Community Service. In

addition to providing a welcome holiday gift, the bags serve as an incentive encouraging teens to access help from the named

agencies. Many members volunteer to fill bags or donate gifts or money to the program. For information, go to

www.gifts4teens.org; on Facebook search “Gifts for Teens.” Contact: Elaine Benoit

Local Scholarship Committee (CAP): The Local Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to support the advancement of

women through their pursuit of higher education. The committee recruits applicants, screens applications, interviews

prospective recipients, and awards scholarships to women who have completed two (2) full years at an accredited college or

university and are enrolled in a four-year institution for the next fall semester. Candidates eligible for our Branch’s awards must

have a permanent home address in Campbell, Milpitas, Santa Clara, or San Jose and a minimum 3.00 GPA. Funds for the

9

scholarships are obtained from individual donations, foundation grants and the annual Holiday Boutique in November. Contact:

Virginia Beck

AAUW Fund: AAUW programs for women and girls at the national, state, and local level are supported by contributions to the

AAUW Fund. Donations may be Unrestricted or Restricted. Unrestricted gifts to AAUW Fund keep AAUW responsive to the

issues affecting women today in the areas of greatest need. Donations can also be restricted, designated for specific AAUW

Funds such as the Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF), Educational Opportunities Fund, Leadership Programs Fund, and many more as

well as to AAUW Fellowships and Grants. Contributions to AAUW Fund are fully tax-deductible. To designate your donation to

a specific fund or program, write the fund or program name on your check or accompanying document. Visit

https://ww2.aauw.org/donate-gift/ for more information. The AAUW San Jose Branch has two (2) AAUW Fund programs, one

focused on Legal Advocacy and the other focused on all remaining restricted and unrestricted funds and projects. Contact: Thea

Jacobs for AAUW Fund and Louise Persson for AAUW Fund LAF.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND COLLABORATIONS

College-University Relations Committee: AAUW encourages branches to connect with local colleges and universities by

recruiting them as college/university (C/U) partners. All undergraduates on those campuses are eligible for a free “e-student-

affiliate” membership in AAUW. They benefit from workshops such as ‘Elect Her’ (how to run for office) and ‘$tart $mart’ (how

to negotiate your salary), Campus Project Grants and scholarships to attend the National Conference for College Women

Student Leaders (NCCWSL). The Branch’s C/U Relations Committee helps to organize AAUW-sponsored campus workshops,

facilitates delivery of AAUW resources and opportunities to its local campus partners, and encourages participation of students,

faculty, and staff in mission-focused activities organized by the Branch. Our current College/University partners are San Jose

State University, Santa Clara University, Evergreen Valley College, and San Jose City College. Contact: Co-Chairs Alyce

Athanasiou and Geri Madden.

Other Collaborations: AAUW San Jose Branch partners with the Coalition for Equal Pay and Bay Area Equal Pay Collaborative,

works with the League of Women Voters of San Jose/Santa Clara to present voter education programs before state and national

elections, and coordinates selected events with the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI).

10

DONATE

Contributions to AAUW Fund, AAUW Fund LAF, the Legacy Circle, and ISPF-AAUW of Santa Clara County are tax deductible to

the full extent of the law.

AAUW Fund: The AAUW Fund helps incubate and grow our successful, community-based, mission-driven programs. In 2015-

16, member donations supported Charting The Course Campaign, the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, the Educational Opportunities

Fund, Elect Her, the Leadership Programs Fund, the Legal Advocacy Fund, Mooneen Lecce Giving Circle Special Projects Fund,

the Morgan Hill Wildflower Run R&P Grant, the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, the Public Policy

Fund, Start Smart and Work Smart, the Public Policy, Tech Trek and Tech Savvy, the AAUW National Convention, research,

and other initiatives. For more information, please see http://www.aauw.org/resource/the-aauw-fund-faq/

and http://www.aauw.org/files/2014/11/The-AAUW-Fund-Diagram.pdf.

Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF): The Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to challenge sex discrimination in higher education and the

workplace. Our resources range from community outreach programs to support of major cases. Sex discrimination today,

which takes a variety of forms including unfair pay, pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and violations

of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, can affect both women and men. LAF addresses these barriers by informing

people of their rights and using the legal system to seek justice and change. For more information, please see Legal Advocacy

Fund.

The Legacy Circle: AAUW members who include AAUW in their estate plans support equity for women and girls and become

members of the Legacy Circle, AAUW’s Planned Giving program. Legacy Circle supporters receive an exclusively designed Legacy

Circle pin, a meaningful symbol of the generosity and commitment of Legacy Circle members to the future of women and girls.

Community Action Projects (CAPs): Donate to the Branch’s local projects through the Inter-Branch Special Projects Foundation

(ISPF) - AAUW of Santa Clara County. Currently four (4) CAPs are part of this foundation, making all donations to them tax-

deductible: Gifts for Teens, Local Scholarship, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and Tech Trek. Make checks payable to “ISPF-

AAUW of Santa Clara County” and write the name of the CAP you are supporting in the memo line. Donations to Financially Fit

for Life are gratefully accepted but are not tax-deductible.

Paid Advertisement for the University Women’s Investment Club (UWIC)

Expecting a company pension is a thing of the past. Since each of us needs to plan and

save for our own retirement, it’s too bad learning to invest in the stock market isn’t part

of the mandatory K-12 curriculum. But it’s not too late. Come learn how to analyze the

market and individual stock earning potential with the University Women’s Investment

Club (UWIC). Started over 30 years ago as an AAUW-SJ interest group, today UWIC is an

independent club of women interested in self-improvement and life-long learning.

Though UWIC can no longer belong to AAUW-SJ we still meet at HQ the fourth

Wednesday of each month at 7pm. For more information please contact Linda Snashall.
