For Marivaux’s The Game of Loveand Chance, the second play by theBrandeis Theater Company this fall, costume design student Deirdre Mc-Cabe (GRAD) and the others work-ing on the play faced a dilemmaconcerning design choices.

“We talked a lot about making theshow accessible to contemporaryaudiences, and one of the ways wedecided to kind of play on it, havesome fun, was with these little popsof modern touches,” McCabe said ofthe costumes, which contain manyfeatures appropriate for an 18th-cen-tury French play, but also incorpo-rate bright colors and modernaccessories like sunglasses. “Noth-ing’s quite period—it’s alwaysbreaking through into these inter-

esting contemporary elements, which is kind of fun.”

McCabe continued, “A lot of thecolor came out of almost the veryfirst design meeting the group of de-signers had. We had this picture ofa green wall—we kind of alwaysknew that the set was going to endup being this bright green color, soall of the colors of the costumeswere designed to pop off that greenwall. There’s also a black and whitefloor, so they also had to pop offthat.”

The play features largely gradu-ate student actors and designers, al-though undergraduate actors,Anthony Rios ’11, Viktoria Lange’13 and Rebecca Miller ’13 have beencast, and Hannah Kaplan ’10 willstage manage.

Beginning next Thursday, Nov.12, the play will run through Nov. 22in Spingold’s Laurie Theater.
