In 2006, a group of young leaders working to
reform education in India came together to
seek an innovative solution to end
educational inequity in the country. The group
met with Wendy Kopp, CEO and Founder of
Teach For America about adapting the TFA
model to the Indian context. Shortly
afterwards in 2007 Shaheen Mistri, the
founder and then CEO of the Mumbai based
education charity Akanksha Foundation,
started Teach For India. Akanksha
Foundation’s support has been vital to TFI’s
successful start-up. In June 2009, Teach For
India placed its first cohort of 87 Fellows in
low-income municipal and private schools in
Pune and Mumbai, the program has grown
dramatically in size, expanding to Delhi and
has now placed its third cohort of over 250
Fellows in June 2011 taking the total numberof TFI Fellows to almost 400. Teach For India
currently employs 70 staff members across
three cities.
TFI places Fellows in low income private and
government English medium primary schools.
Approximately 27% of India’s children are
educated in private schools and in contrast to
the West the majority of these schools serve
low income communities and have very
rudimentary infrastructure. Facilities and
standards in schools vary significantly
however; the students in every school are of
high need. Schools are eligible to work withTFI if their monthly fees for students are
below 500 Rs. (US $11). The schools do not
pay Fellows; instead TFI directly employs
them and only fills existing teacher vacancies
within the school system. TFI is working with
the Municipal Commission of Greater Mumbai
(MCGM) to reform and improve all of the
government schools in Mumbai. This is a huge
project and TFI’s Fellows & Staff are involved
in the pro ject’s strategy and implementation,
Fellows provide pilot classrooms for the
project and also training to teachers within
the system.
TFI pays all of the salaries of its Fellows and
Staff. Presently the Government does not
fund any of TFI’s activities and therefore
fundraising is crucial to the success and
survival of the organisation. TFI is funded from
a variety of foundations, trusts, individuals
and events.
