rouND LYInO one ON THE FIlLD Or anTsL.

Wreck of a warrior passed away !Thou form without a name!

Which thought and felt but yesterday,And dreamed of future fame !

Stripved of thy garments who shall guessThy rank, thy lineage, and race ?If haughty chieftain, holding asway,Or lowlier, destined to obey ?

Thelight of that fixed eye is set,And all is imoveless now,

But Passion's traces linger yet,And lower upon that brow;

Expression has not yet waxed weak,Thepallid lipeseeeme'en to speak,And clenched the cold and liteles hand,As ,if it grasped the battle brand !

oT ugh;om that head, late towering high,The Waiig plume is torn,

And low in dust that form doth lie,Dishonored and forlorn !

'Yet death's dark shadow cannot hideThe graven characters of pride,That on the lip and brow revealThe impress of the spirit's seal.

Lives there a mother, to deplore. The son she ne'er shallsee ?Or maiden, on some distant shore,

To break her heart for thee ?Perchance to roam a maniac there,Wild, wild flower wreaths to deck her hairAnd through the wehry night to waitThy footstep at the lonely gate.

Long shall she linger there, in vainThe evening fire shall trim,

And gazing on the darkening main,Shall often call on him

Who hears her not-who cannot hear-0! deaf forever is the earThat once in list'ning rapture hungUpon the music of her tongue!

Long may she dream-to wake is woe !Ne'er may remembrance tell

Its tale, to bid her sorrow flow,And hope to sigh farewell:

The heart bereaving of its stay,Quenching the beam that cheers her wayAlong the waste of life-till sheShall lay her down and sleep like thee!

An Incident of the Revolution.* The want of provisions in the camp of Bur-goyne, just previous to his capture by the'Americans, began to be severely felt; theAmericans had seized their last supply whichsome boats contained; all resort to the countrylyisg round, where tory friends were to belousd, was totally out off. The prosecutingAmericans had fenced them in as with a wallof vengeance, which could not be passed; faminehad commenced its unnerving power, sicknesswas multiplied among the soldiery, fever, at-tended with its deliriums, raved from couoh tocouch. Water, water was the incessant cry.And although the Hudson on one side of thecamp poured. along its silent waters, and therapid stream of Fish Creek roared sweetly inthe ears of the sick and desponding forces, yetit was impossible to snatch a drop from thosedreadfully guarded waters: a hundred bulletswere sure to pierce whoever made the attempt, soon as they stooped to touch the silver current. But such were the cries for water, by the sickand dying, that their women, moved by pity, were made superior to the dreadful crisis (ima-gining that the Amnericanswould not, from feel-ngs lf gallantry, shoot a female,) snatched

hastily their pails,. and ran to the shores to trywhat the event might be. Their opinion of theenemy, as it proved, with respect to their per-mond, was correctly formed, but their pails were

doomed to a harder fate, for while they couldnot find it in their hearts to spill the blood ofdefenceless females, they were sure to riddletheir pails as they hung from their hands, sothati ttle or no water could be procured.

'In this dilemma, a faithful wife, who had lefther native country for love of her husband, whowas one of the unfortunate Hessians sold by hisGovernment to the King of England at a certainsum ahead, to fight in a cause, the merits ofwhich he knew nothing; this woman, as shemoved from couch to couch, listening to themoans of the sick for water, suddenly resolved;"I will try, perhaps I may sunoceed to bring alittle." Her huSband tried to dissuade her, butshe persisted, her sympathies were strong, foras akind and comforting angel she made it herbulsness to hover over the diseased and woundedof her countrymen (the Hessians) all the whilesheehad been in the army. She sprang alongthe adventurous path that led to the dreaded

.•hore, her husband following close as far as he-dared; already she stood at the brink in full viewof the guns on the other side; for a moment sheoast an imploring glance that way, and then toheaven for protection; her right hand. haddashed the vessel deep into the waters; a strug.gle to clear the openshore and reaoh the deeply-shasdpd bank, had marked her agitated demean.or,. when a ball, aimed at her pail, struck, aslse had stooped over the vessel too low, herangel bosom; the blood spouted and dyed theground before her quivering frame fell crim-sened in the gore of her faithful heart.

Her husband, who had waited but a shortdistance for.her return, had not moved his con-eant eye from his all of earth, while within hissoul vibrated between the east extremes of hopeapddespair, her screoeh struck his ear, herreeling frame showed him that the shaft of deathhad cleft her heart asunder. She had buttocpelld the ground where she fell; when, hisarmsnaleeed her, dyed .in spouting blood fromher m; fr;atig1with grif, he dreAspd not

Nor along a line ofroad to the northeast of the hill, he saw a thick acloud of dust, from which quiekly plunged out ba group of horsemen, evidently officers; the;foremost not so tall as most of them, nor sograceful a rider as many of them, though he' asat firmly too, was recognized by Colon aid his amen (long before he was near enough fr.thein. uto distinguish a single:.feature of his face) byhis gray frock-coat and smallat three-corneredcooked hat. -

Colon gave the word of command; and in an- aother minute Napoleon, at the head of his staff, areined up on the top of the hill. He htd leftthe march of the grand army some leagues be-hind, and ridden on towards Labarre, in order, with his wonted watchfulness, to take-the de-tachment by surprise, and see what they were idabout. His eagle eye, whose glance saw every 'thing like another's gaze, had at once de-teoted the party on the hill, and he had riddenfrom the road at fall speed up the slope to die- tcover what the object of the meeting was ; alglance, too, told him that; and while he wasyet returning the salute of the men and theirsergeant, be said, in a,voice pasiting after hishard gallop, "Hey I .hat's this?--a detar-`tion?" "Yes, sir-no, sir; not exactly," stammeredColon.

"And what business hadet thou to advise acomrade in a breach of duty? Stand back, tothy place."

And Resumer retired, covered with shame.Napoleon beckoned Jean to him; he came, andRollo with him; and the latter, as though 'un-derstanding the power ani authority of theman his master thus obeyed, put his forepaws-against his stirrup, and whimpered imploringlyup to him.
