Gate valve data

Gate valve data

Gate valve stem data The Acme thread was developed sometime in the second half of the nineteenth century as a profile

well suited to power screws that has various advantages over the square thread, which had been

the form of choice until then. It is easier to cut via either single-point threading or die than the

square thread is (because the latter's shape requires tool bit or die tooth geometry that is poorly

suited to cutting); it wears better than square (because the wear can be compensated for); it is

stronger than a comparably sized square thread; and it makes for smoother engagement of the half

nuts on a lathe leads crew than square does. The Acme thread form name appears as early as

1895.

Acme screw threads are now extensively used for a variety of purposes. Long-length Acme threads

are used for controlled movements on machine tools, testing machines, jacks, aircraft flaps, and

conveyors.

Short-length threads are used on valve stems, hose connectors, bonnets on pressure cylinders,

steering mechanisms, and camera lens movement

Sizing linear motorized actuator to gate valve

For example:

8” gate valve class 150

Valve’s stem diameter = 32 mm

Number of turns = 43 turns

Thrust = 28.8 KN

Torque = 85.5 NM

Sizing linear motorized actuator to gate valve

We choose Rotork linear electric actuator

model IQ-20

With 36 RPM actuator speed, the actuator

torque = 203 NM >>> more than 85.5 NM

So the actuator timing to open/close = 43

turns x 60/36 = 71.7 seconds

The Rotork actuator model IQ-20 has

mounting dimension of F14

We use the group “A” coupling (for rising

stem), the coupling diameter = 38 mm

>>> more than 32 mm of the gate valve’s

stem diameter

The thrust rating of model IQ-20 = 100 KN

>>> more than 28.8 KN of the gate valve

thrust

So the complete model of Rotork linear

electric actuator is IQ20-F14-A

BIG GATE VALVE

Sizing linear motorized actuator to big gate valve

For example: 24” gate valve class 300 Torque = 2,451 NM, with 30 % safety factor torque = 1,3 x 2,451 = 3,186 NM Thrust = 408 KN Stem diameter = 2-1/2 mm Number of turns = 64 turns

The model IQ-95 can

stand 3,000 NM only !!!!!

So we have to use IQ

multiturn electric

actuator with:

ADDITIONAL bevel gear

model IB.

For example:

We choose model IQ-70, at 48 RPM, the torque = 1,020 NM

With coupling A, thrust of

actuator model IQ-70 = 220 KN

The model IQ-70 electric actuator has an ISO-5210

dimension of F25

Sizing linear motorized actuator to big gate valve

For example:

We choose the IB-10 gear box

Input ISO-5210 flange from actuator = F25

Output flange to valve = F25

Sizing linear motorized actuator to big gate valve

The IB-10 gear box:

Max ACME thread = 3-3/8” >>> more than 2-1/2” ACME thread of the gate valve

24” gate valve class 300

Torque = 2,451 NM with 30 % safety factor torque = 1,3 x 2,451

= 3,186 NM

Thrust = 408 KN

We choose motorized actuator model IQ-70 at 48 RPM, the

torque = 1,020 NM

We choose IB-11 gear model

Nominal ratio = 4

Motorized output torque = 4,067 Nm > 1,020 NM

Valve’s thrust maximum = 500 KN > 408 KN

Nominal advantage = 3.85

Motorized actuator torque + IB-20 gear becomes:

(3.85 x 1,020 NM) = 3,927 NM > gate valve’s torque 3,186 NM
