Extended NSRADMIN functionality
• Problem: Upgrades from 8.x->9.x transitioned to NetWorker policy– New nsrpolicy CLI commands were introduced:
▪ Policy Resource, Workflows, Actions
• 8.x nsradmin group resources convert to policy representation in 9.x– Broke existing scripts that used nsradmin to manage save groups
– Users had to modify scripts to use nsrpolicy commands
– nsrpolicy required users to edit a long string of JSON attributes
policy, workflows and actions were all in one string
• Net Result: Customers performing nsradmin command line backups had to learn
nsrpolicy and modify scripts, which were more complicated to edit
Extended NSRADMIN Functionality
• Solution: Enhance nsradmin to fully support NetWorker policy▪ Nsradmin can now create, retrieve, update and delete policy resources
▪ Splits policy into three simple resources ▪ nsrpolicy, nsrworkflow, nsraction
▪ uses key:value pair (nsradmin policy related resource attribute)
▪ run from nsradmin> improves legacy user adoption
▪ Enables parts of the policy to be updated/created independentlyreduces the size of the command string making the CLI easier to use
▪ Updates the RAP database through a JSON converter▪ Converter avoids complex parsing and eases string manipulation
▪ Changes reflected in GUI and nsradmin CLI,
▪ Helps users streamlines/improves configuration automation
▪ Net Result: ▪ Customers will still need to modify their scripts that used the save group command in 8.2
▪ The benefit is they can now use NSRADMIN commands to control NW Policy
▪ They DON’T need to learn JSON syntax, making adoption easier
Extended NSRADMIN functionalitySolution: enhance nsradmin to fully support NetWorker policy
• Nsradmin can now create, retrieve, update and delete policy resources
• Splits policy into three simple resources
• Reduces the size of the command string making the CLI easier to use
• Updates the RAP database through a JSON converter
• Net Result: – Customers will still need to modify their scripts that used the save group command in 8.2
– The benefit is they can now use NSRADMIN commands to control NW Policy
– They DON’T need to learn JSON syntax, making adoption easier
18.2 Increases # of retries and retry delay
Adds automated multi-streaming for Exchange
• AMS is an advanced DD replication method– Splits large files into multiple slices/chunks
▪ Leverages Multiple Streams on Level0 Clones
▪ Leverages MFR on Level1 Clones (VSF)
▪ Requires DDOS 5.5+ and 10 Gigabit Ethernet
▪ Available when Backup App is AMS Aware
• NetWorker uses AMS when– Save Set Type is Supported (Exchange, vProxy, File)
– Save Set is Larger than 3.5 GB
– No Level0 Base exists at that target DD
▪ Larger Save Sets are Moved Faster because of Multi Streaming
• NetWorker uses MFR with AMS when– Saves Set is smaller than 3.5 GB
– Level0 Already Exists on the Target
▪ Uses a Level1 VSF, resulting in much less data being sent
Automated Multi Streaming Chunking Process
VSF Process for Level1 Cloning
Introduces missed client backup reporting
• NetWorker 18.2 Adds Attributes to the
Workflow Job Record to Enable DPA to report
on Missed Backups of the Following Types– Client is Disabled
– Workflow Overlap
– NetWorker Server is Down
Exposes additional client attributes via REST
The following additional client attributes are now exposed
• Enables additional configuration management options via REST API
Expands NMDA NMSAP compressed restore
• Started in 18.1 for Oracle and DB2– Uses DDBOOST compressed restore
• 18.2 adds Informix, Oapp, IQ, Lotus,
MySQL, Sybase, SAP
• Invoked via Restore GUI or CLI
DDBOOST_COMPRESSED_RESTORE=TRUE
Adds IPv6 support to vProxy
• Industry is shifting towards IPv6– Modern Data Centers
– Federal Agencies are mandating
• All components under 18.1 NVP
supported IPv6 except the vProxy
• 18.2 Adds IPv6 to the vProxy
Additional features in the release
• 8.x->18.2 Upgrade Feature– Automatic Distribution of Groups across Multiple Policies on Upgrade
▪ New feature will create multiple policies when there are more than 50 groups
▪ Each Policy will contain no more than 50 work-flows after the upgrade
▪ Better Aligns upgrades with 9.x+ best practices
• Granular Backup of a Single Save Set in a Workflow via nsrworkflow– Improves Backup Flexibility for Admins who run, rerun or perform add-hoc backups via CLI
• NVE Azure Stack for Private Cloud– Integration lab effort to enable deployment of NVE on Azure Stack

Claims global dedupe
Rubrik … and HCI Appliances in GeneralPain Points they claim they solve…
• Ease of deployment
• Ease of manageability and usage (“Reflect” central management)
• Ease of flexible ‘pay as you grow’ scalability
• Cheaper cloud economics for LTR/archiving instead of tape for archiving
Pain Points they cause…
• Not a low cost solution – low balls initial quotes; adding additional Briks is expensive (often only sizes for 1 year or less)
• Low performance, capacity, efficiency and consistency/predictability – 3:1 – 5:1 “dedupe” based on delta compression or native compression with SQL, Oracle, NAS
• Small VM (100 – 200 100GB VMs) and Stream counts per brik – users often run out of compute before storage and have to add more expensive/fixed nodes (i.e., 4-node Briks)
• Limited to 12 backup streams per brik which increases backup windows by up to 55%
• Dependent on NBD transport which sends up to 98% more data across the network and adds massive traffic on the LAN
• Limited application support (no support for DB2, Informix, Solaris, etc) requires VSS agent for SQL and challenges with Oracle
• High cloud usage footprint (and fees); must do full back-ups + incrementals @ 15 – 30 days depending on data change rates
• 8x 10GbE network ports PER Brik for Rubrik (vs 4x network ports for a IDPA DP4400) drive up network resource costs and complexity (switching and cabling) as more Briks are added in a cluster
Veritas 5240 and 5340…”Little Bear – Big Bear”Pain Points they claim they solve…
• Full Data Protection software – either DiY (5240) or fully integrated (5330/5340)
• Cloud integrated/cloud capable for LTR, Back-up, DR and virtual in-cloud instantiations
• Wide scale range (4TB to 300TB usable) configs – just add a storage shelf
• Highly reliable platforms with NetBackup v 8.1 or 8.1.1; high density storage drives recently added
Pain Points they cause…
• Neither are low cost solutions as they scale (incl support) – 5240 is PBBA; 5340 starts at 120TB usable
• 5340 uses variable block dedupe (NBU 8.1.1); 5240 and 5330 uses 6-segment fixed only (creates mixed
separate dedupe pools unless customer backward upgrades everything to v 8.1.1 disruptive upgrade)
• A separate CloudCatalyst server/appliance is required for Cloud use cases –more HW/more TCO
• Software licensing is somewhat complex – ‘classical’ ala carte licensing or capacity licensing, etc.
• The 5330/5340 is a 2U control head unit; additional storage shelves take up more rack space

“Smaller is not necessarily better for enterprise DP”
Smaller Appliance Vendors…Pain Points they claim they solve…
• Lower cost, simple data protection appliances for entry, low-end and mid-range DP users
• Plug and play and ‘scalable’ (just buy another/separate appliance)
• Cloud integrated with unlimited cloud usage (their own public clouds)
• Simple and easy operation monitoring and management interfaces
Pain Points they cause…
• No ability to grow capacity in place without additional hardware install – additional storage capacity is via additional (or
larger) appliance units
• Lower performance and efficiency – you get what you pay for
• Smaller Appliance vendors have fewer employees, less support capability and smaller “global or market reach”
• Mid-market and ROBO enterprise customers quickly grow out of smaller BU & Recovery appliances – or tire of being
chained to a small player
• Typical warranty is 1-year HW warranty (90-days for SW) – limited (if any) onsite support; parts/replace and CRUs are
norm
• Lower dedupe ratios; less automation and spotty reporting capabilities = lower productivity and DP value
Are Small Players
