CHALLENGEImprove new member retention
OUTCOME• Piloted their top idea in two
YMCA branches
• Since completion this idea is now being implemented in all 16 participating locations
METHODOLOGY• 4-week timeframe with 4
in-person half to full-day sessions and nearly 40 participants
• Used Independence design tools and processes to understand the depth and details of the challenge
• Learned how to gather insight that would inform idea generation
• Practiced reductive thinking
• Executed the art of storytelling to pitch top ideas to executive leadership

CHALLENGEDesign a dedicated teen space at the Fumo Family Library in South Philadelphia
OUTCOMEStudents processed each stimulus, sketched their ideal Teen Corner, and presented to library leadership
METHODOLOGY• 1 half-day session with the
library director and nearly 20 local teens
• Learned how to think more expansively and reconsider assumptions of what this space “should” look like
• Participated in a post-it exercise to individually envision the new space
• Researched how color and design influence a space
