An overview of the City of Omaha’s

42nd & Q Street Bridge Replacement and Intersection Improvement Project

OPW 50079 / MAPA‐5057(9) /CN 22279

Safety Is At The Center of This Project

The purpose of the Q Street bridge replacement is to correct deficiencies at this structurally deficient bridge.

The purpose of the intersection improvements is to improve safety at the T‐intersection of 42nd

Street west of the Q Street bridge where crash rates exceed average rates for similar signalized intersections in the state.  Concerns have also been raised about high speed vehicles and pedestrian safety.

42nd & Q Street ImprovementsThe project at 42nd & Q Street will replace the Q Street bridge over the BNSF Railway tracks and reconstruct the roadway on each side of  the bridge (from approximately 41st Street to 44th Street).  Both of the 42nd

Street intersections with Q Street will be replaced with roundabouts.

Safety Is At The Center of This Project

The existing signalized pedestrian crossing between 44th & 45th Streets will be relocated further east closer to  the roundabout.

The offset alignment of the new bridge will keep Q Street open to traffic during construction.

A new 4‐lane bridge over the BNSF Railway tracks will include sidewalk on both sides of Q Street.

42nd Street will be widened to 3‐lanes south of Q Street.

The southbound two‐lane approach will allow traffic to get in the correct lane prior to entering the roundabout based on their destination.

Refuge islands mean pedestrians only need to cross one lane at a time.
