Abstract: Publication in a peer-reviewed journal is the obvious goal of

most researchers to reach others in the field, advancing knowledge and

encouraging communication between groups with similar research interest.

One of the most important and possibly the least well understood aspects of

the publication process is the choice of a suitable journal that is likely to

improve your research visibility and impact. For instance, publishing your

article in an Open Access journal. On the other side, online profiles is an

essential tool to disseminate your research and publications. Scholarly

identifiers and online profiles like ResearcherID and ORCiD provide a

solution to the author ambiguity problem within the scholarly research

community. In this presentation, I introduce some of the most important

criteria for writing a paper, choosing a journal, and disseminating your

research especially creating online profile that promise higher research

visibility and impact.

From submission to sharing: the life

cycle of an article

• Phase 1: Conception and birth

• Phase 2: Submission

• Phase 3: Reviewers

• Phase 4: Production and publication

• Phase 5: Dissemination and archiving

– The article is published, but its life cycle isn’t

yet complete. In this phase, dissemination can

start; sharing the Share Links article helps

increase readership and make it more visible. Publishing procedure and strategies to improve research visibility and impact

Preparing for Publication – Writing

• Use a unique name consistently throughout academic

careers;

• Use a standardized institutional affiliation and address;

• Repeat key phrases in the abstract while writing

naturally;

• Assign keyword terms to the manuscript;

• Use more references;

• Write a longer paper;

• Write a review paper;

Preparing for Publication – Collaboration

& Journal Selection

• Publish with international authors;

• Publish papers with a Nobel laureates;

• Publish your article in one of the journals

everyone in your discipline reads

• Open Access (OA) has a positive impact on

growth of citations;

• Publish your work in a journal with the highest

number of indexing

Strategies to increase citations

• Target a journal with a high impact factor, or, in fact, with any impact factor

at all!

• Choose a new, rapidly growing field of research. Articles on hot topics tend

to cite much more recent references than those in more traditional fields.

• Target journals in rapidly growing research fields because they tend to

publish papers with a short time interval from submission to acceptance.

• Write research articles, technical notes and reviews. For the purposes of

calculating citations, these are considered “citable” items. Editorials, letters,

news items and meeting abstracts are “non-citable items”.

• Write reviews in addition to research papers. Reviews are more likely to be

cited than original research papers.

• Write at length. Longer articles are cited more often.

31

Strategies to increase citations

• Make it easy for others to access your work. Online availability of articles

clearly increases citations (and therefore, the journal’s impact factor). It

helps if researchers can find relevant articles and access them instantly,

rather than working their way through barriers of passwords and

technicalities. This effect will increase with the availability of search engines

like Google Scholar.

– Target “open access” journals (especially if they have an impact factor).

– Make your work available via the Google searches/ResearcherID.

– Put the address for your ResearcherID page into your email signature as a

clickable link.

• Don’t write as a member of a consortium. It’s better to be one in a list of

individual authors. Some evidence shows citations to articles written by

consortia have been undercounted.

• Find quick publication Journals

Open Access Journal

One key request of researchers across the world

is unrestricted access to research publications.

Open access gives a worldwide audience larger

than that of any subscription-based journal and

thus increases the visibility and impact of

published works. It also enhances indexing,

retrieval power and eliminates the need for

permissions to reproduce and distribute content.

How to increase the visibility of your research?1. Get unique author identifier ORCID to distinguish yourself and your work from that of all other researchers.

2. Share outputs of your research

3. Create and keep up to date online profile (or a web CV)

4. Engage in social networking communities

5. Blog

Adopted from: http://pitt.libguides.com/researchvisibility

Why do I need a researcher profile?

Researcher profiles allow

you to:

– make you and your

research more discoverable

– create and manage a

publication list

– avoid misidentification

– create opportunities to be

cited

– find and be found by

potential collaborators

The Challenge at Hand

• Inconsistent name formats caused by the authors themselves or

editors

• Various transliteration systems, especially where different non-

Roman alphabet names result in the same transliterated Roman

alphabet name.

• Legal name changes

• Cultural variants in the position of surnames

• Compound or hyphenated names

• The sheer volume of scholarly materials

• Highly similar names sometimes even doing similar work at the

same institution.

• The large number of common names, especially certain surnames in

many cultures.Source: A. B. Wagner, “Author Identification Systems,” Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship, 2009.

Why get an ORCID identifier?

Benefits of getting an ORCID iD include:

• Ensuring researchers get credit for their work

• Reducing time to identify scholarly output (see “Publisher integration,” below)

• Enabling scholars to keep track of and report on their work with funders, publishers and

institutions

• Repurposing data for use in CV generation, citation repositories, BU Profiles, annual reports,

faculty web-sites, and other systems (see “Grant submission integration,” below)

• Tying individuals to their scholarly work should make finding academic papers easier and more

accurate

Publisher integration: Elsevier, Thomson Reuters, Nature and other major publishers have begun integrating ORCID

iDs into the manuscript submission process, and embedding ORCID identifiers across their scientific and scholarly

research ecosystem. This will save authors time during submission, and enable automatic updating of author

bibliographies when articles are published. That information can be ingested into BU systems, at each scholar’s

discretion.

Grant submission integration: NIH, NSF and other federal agencies are planning to integrate ORCID iDs into the

ScienCV platform, for linking researchers, their grants, and their scientific output. The US federal government has been

working to create a fed-wide profile system to streamline the grants and contract application process and reduce the

data entry burden for investigators, and ORCID holds promise to be part of the solution.
