What is the goal of the presentation? What general issues are related to your

topic? How can you use ethos, pathos, and logos in

your speech? What does your audience need to know and

want to know?

CANON:ORGANIZATION

The Introduction~Greeting~Introduce Topic~Your thesis The Body~Points and supporting details~Use connectors The Conclusion~Repeat your topic~Repeat your points

CANON:STYLE

Target certain areas for ornamental language.

Use analogies and metaphors. Use narratives.

CANON:DELIVERY

Don’t read your presentation. Maintain consistent eye contact with the

audience. Be natural with your nonverbal delivery.

CANON:UNDERSTANDING

A liberal arts education is important. Be cognizant of current events. Talk with others. Understanding is not

achieved in isolation. Be engaged.

TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR PRESENTATION

Gather materials. Carefully review the assignment expectation. Use the invention process to accumulate

information. Plan to be organized. Plan to be clear. When selecting details, focus on quality, not

quantity. Edit for style. If possible, practice, practice, practice. Plan for effective delivery. Enjoy the opportunity!
