    1. Exams(25%each):Theexamswillconsistofmultiplechoicequestions

    whichwillbecompletedonscantronforms.Thismeansyouwillneedtobringapencilandanerasertoeveryexamperiodtocompletethescantron.YouwillalsoneedtobringyourstudentIDoranotheracceptableformofgovernment-issuedphotoID.Theexamsarenotcumulativeandwillconsistonlyofmultiplechoicequestions.Anymaterialcoveredinlecture,thetextbookorrequiredLaunchpadexercisesmayappearontheexam.Pleasenotethatmaterialcoveredverballyinlecturebutnotlistedonthelectureslidesisexaminable.Itisthusrecommendedthatyouattendeveryclassandtakecomprehensive,detailednotes.

    Allexamswillconsistof60multiple-choicequestionsandwillbe80minuteslong.Thefirsttwoexamsinthecoursewillbeheldduringnormalclasstimeonthedateslistedinthecalendarbelow.Pleasenotethat,becausethisisa

    BecausethedateandtimeofthefinalexamisnotannouncedbyUBCStudentServicesuntilmid-semester,youmustnotmaketravelarrangementsuntilyouknowthedateofthefinalexam.Youwillnotbeexcusedfromthefinalexambecauseofpre-existingtravelarrangements.

    Multiple-choicequestionsontheexamswillbeansweredonascantron.Ifyouhavenottakenanexamusingascantronbefore,pleasemakesurethatyouseeyourTAforinstructionsonusebeforethedayofthefirstexam.Becausescantronsaremarkedbymachine,notbyhand,mistakesmadeinfillingthemoutcouldreduceyourmark!

    Testsareoftenasourceofstressforstudents,andyourinstructionalteamwouldliketolessenthisstressasmuchaspossible.WeencourageyoutovisityourTAthroughoutthetimeleadinguptoexams(notjusttheweekbefore!)toensurethatyoufeelcomfortablegoingintotheexam.Despiteourdesiretobeflexibleandtoensurethesuccessofeachstudent,becauseofthelargenumberofstudentsinthiscourse,someguidelinesmustbeobservedregardingexams.Pleasenotethattheseguidelinesarenotflexibleandwillnotbemodifiedonanindividualbasisforanyreason:

    • Latearrivaltoexams:Ifyouarrivelessthan30minuteslatetoanexam,youwillbepermittedtowritetheexam,butwillnotbeallotedextratimetodoso.Forexample,ifyouarriveat5:15pmforanexamthatstartedat5:00pm,youwillstillonlyhaveuntil6:20pmtofinishtheexam,alongwiththerestoftheclass.Ifyouarrivemorethan30minuteslatetoanexam,youwillnotbepermittedtowritetheexam.

    • Leavingduringanexam:Ifyouhaveamedicalconditionthatmayrequireyoutoleaveanexamandreturntotheroomtocontinuewritingtheexam,youmustprovidethisinformationtotheinstructoratthestartofclassesinSeptemberorattheearliestpossibledatepriortothefirstexaminwhichthemedicalconditionisapplicable.Otherwise,nostudentwillbepermittedtoleavetheroomduringanexamforanyreason(including

  • bathroombreaks).Ifyouchoosetoleavetheroomduringtheexam,youmustfirstturninyourexam,andyouwillnotbepermittedtocontinuewritingtheexamafterthatpoint.

    • Examsecurity:UBCtakesthesecurityofitsexaminationproceduresseriously.PleaseseetheendofthisdocumentforadditionalinformationontheUniversity’sproceduresregardingbreachesinexamsecurityand/orplagiarism.Notethatitisrequiredthatyouremaincompletelysilentduringexams,includingwhenturningyourexamin,untilallexamshavebeencollected.Notremainingsilent,usingunauthorizedmaterialsduringtheexam,andlookingatanotherstudent’sexaminationmaterialsmaybegroundsfora0ontheexam.Pleasenotethattheinstructionalteamreservestherighttoaskanindividualstudenttochangeseatsduringaexamforanyreason.

    • Missedexams:Weunderstandthatcircumstancesmayarisethatcauseastudenttomissanexam.IfyouplantomissanexambecauseofareligiousobligationorbecauseofofficialtravelaspartofaUBC-sanctionedextracurricularactivity,youmustpresentthisinformationtotheinstructoratthebeginningofclassesinSeptembersothatarrangementscanbemade.Ifyoumissanexambecauseofanunexpectedillnessorevent:

    • ImmediatelyapplyforanacademicconcessionfromyourFaculty(e.g.,Arts,Science,etc.).

    o Youmustdosoatyourearliestpossibleconvenience,andatamaximumof48hoursafterthemissedexam(unlessmedicallyincapacitated).YoucanfindyourFaculty’sacademicadvisingoffice’scontactinformationbysearchingonline.Youwillberequiredtosendthemdocumentationoftheeventthatcausedyoutomisstheexam.Theywillprocessyourrequestandwillcontacttheinstructorwiththeirdecisionregardingyourconcession.

    o IFyourfacultyaskstheinstructortograntyouanacademicconcessionandtheinstructoragrees,yourmarkforthecoursewillbeadjustedsothatyourtworemainingexamscountfor37.5%eachinsteadoffor25%each.Therearenomakeupexamsinthiscourse.

    o PleasenotethatthereisnoguaranteethatyourFacultywilladvocateforanacademicconcessiononyourbehalf,orthattheinstructorwillagreetoprovideaconcession.Whileconcessionsareusuallygrantedformedicalemergencieswithamedicalprofessional’swrittenanddatednote,theyare

  • typicallynotgrantedforothertypesofevent(e.g.,sleepingin,academicorprofessionalworkload,etc.).

    2. Launchpadexercises(10%):Launchpadexerciseslistedinthecourse

    calendarbelowarerequired.Eachweek,youwillbeassignedoneWeeklyExerciseandoneSummativeQuiz.ThesearebothdueeachFridayeveningat11:59pmPacifictime,exceptwhereindicateddifferentlyonthecourseschedule.WeeklyExerciseswillcountfor40%ofyourLaunchpadmark(4%ofyourtotalgrade)andSummativeQuizzeswillcountfor60%ofyourLaunchpadmark(6%ofyourtotalgrade).

    3. Mythbusters(13%):Thisisatwo-partassignment.Thefirstpart,yourproposal,isdueonFriday,September23by11:59pmonConnect.Thisproposalshouldbeapproximately250wordsinlength(12-point,TimesNewRomanfont,double-spaced).Inyourproposal,youshouldidentifyacommonlyheldbeliefaboutpsychologyandgivesomebackgroundaboutthatbelief.Thereisnoneedtoreferencesourcesforthispartoftheassignment.Failuretocompleteaproposalbythedeadlinewillresultinanautomatic15%deductionfromyourMythbustersmark.

    Thesecondpartoftheassignment,thepaper,isdueonFriday,November25by11:59pmonConnect.Thispapershouldbeapproximately1000wordsinlength(12-point,TimesNewRomanfont,double-spaced).Inthispaper,youshouldinvestigatethetopicthatyouproposedinSeptember,nowrelyingoninformationthatyoulearnedinlecture,fromthetextbook,andfromscholarlysources.Forthispaper,youarerequiredtociteatleastfourscholarlysources,ofwhichonecanbethecoursetextbook.APAformattingmustbeusedthroughoutthepaper.Additionaldetailsregardingthisassignment,aswellasarubric,willbemadeavailableonConnectinearlySeptember.

    4. ResearchExperienceComponent:AllPSYC101studentsatUBCarerequiredtocompletetwo(2)creditsofresearchexperience,whichwillearnyou2%ofyourfinalmarkinthecourse.Therearetwooptionstoearnyourresearchexperience:1)throughparticipatinginrealpsychologyexperimentsviatheHumanSubjectsPool,and2)throughwritingareportbasedonapsychologicalresearcharticle.Thesetwooptionsareexplainedindepthbelow.
