201 Manitoba Derby8 Memories
1969 Manitoba Derby Winner
Fire N Desire
Today we salute all participants, past and present who have made the Manitoba Derby what it is today!
In 1960 the Manitoba Derby with its storied past was resurrected and it has been run at the Downs ever since. In 1985 the
Derby was changed to an open event for all three-year-old thoroughbreds. To date, three Manitoba breds have won our
Derby. Gowerlace was the first to accomplish the feat in 1938. It took almost 40 years for the next home-bred, Merry's Jay to
win the race in 1976 and Royal Frolic followed in 1993.
Assiniboia Downs proudly celebrates the history of the Manitoba Derby. The list of previous winners includes national and
local champions such as Fanfreluche, Merry's Jay and Overskate; owners include Levesque, Mitchell and K5 Stables, and
trainers Rowntree, Blake and Starr. Jockeys Hawley, Krone and Platts are but a few of the riders who have won our Derby.
The 2019 Derby is the 71st running and a special anniversary of the race. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth ll presented her cup
for the first time on July 15, 1970 at the Manitoba Centennial Derby. Monday August 5, 2019 marks the 50th time the Queen's
Cup is being presented to the Derby champion.
In 1941 the name of the race was changed to the Canadian Derby. Few people realize that the heart and soul of the
prestigious Canadian Derby can be found in Winnipeg and that the Canadian Derby was “born” out of the Manitoba Derby. At
that time, Canada was the only major country that did not have a national “derby” so R. J. Speers sacrificed "Manitoba" for a
national name.
The Canadian Derby was run at Polo Park race track until it closed in 1956 and the race was relocated to Edmonton. Jack Hardy
tried to bring the race back to Winnipeg when Assiniboia Downs opened in 1958, but was unsuccessful so the Canadian Derby
is still run in Edmonton.
The first “Derby” was run in 1930; although from 1930 to 1933 it was known as the Manitoba Stakes. In 1934 the name of the
race was changed to the Manitoba Derby. It should come as no surprise that our Derby was the brainchild of Robert James
Speers, the Father of Thoroughbred Racing in western Canada. Speers established the race for horsemen to showcase
thoroughbreds that were foaled in western Canada.

In 1936 the Derby was opened to all horses bred in Canada. The race was run annually at old Polo Park racetrack with the
exception of 1937 when it was held at Whittier Park in St. Boniface.

CALL IT A WRAP
Call It a Wrap began his career in B.C. as a 2-year-old, where he showed his class with a win in the CTHS Stakes and a
third-place finish in the Jack Diamond Futurity. As a 3-year-old, he's continued to roll in stakes at Century Mile in Alberta,
finishing third in the Jim Coleman Province Stakes and second in both the Western Canada Handicap and the Count
Latham Handicap.
Trainer Tim Rycroft wants a Manitoba Derby to add to his resume and he might just get it with Call It a Wrap.
A proven rallier, Call It a Wrap was stretching out to a route for the first time in the one-mile Count Latham and he
recorded his lifetime best Beyer Speed Figure of 74. The son of Jamaica Handicap-G3 winner Finality appears that he will
only get better as he goes further, and he's out of a Lemon Drop Kid mare, which should bolster his stamina perfectly for
the longer distance of the Manitoba Derby.
The 56-year-old conditioner from Alberta currently leads the standings at Century Mile; he's already won the Canadian
Derby-G3 twice and the B.C. Derby-G3 once; and the owners of Call It a Wrap, Riversedge Racing Stables Ltd. were
partners on his 2015 Canadian and B.C. Derby winner Academic. Simply put, these connections know how to win a
Derby.
Slated to be ridden by one of the top Century Mile riders in Wilmer Galviz, Call It a Wrap shipped in from Alberta a week
before the Manitoba Derby, just to get a feel for the Assiniboia Downs surface, and he loved it.
All systems go.

CANDY CON
Owners: 2PF Stable
Trainer: Tom Gardipy, Jr. Jockey: Richard Mairs
3 Year Old - -Dark Bay Gelding
Pedigree: Sidney’s Candy - Simple Symphony by ConsolidatorBred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall
A son of Santa Anita Derby-G1 winner Sidney's Candy, Candy Con appears to be improving as the races get longer. All
seven of his lifetime starts have been at Assiniboia Downs, and after winning the first race of his career two starts ago in
a Maiden Special Weight going seven furlongs, he stretched out to a mile and jumped up in class to finish third in the
Harry Jeffrey Stakes, despite being disadvantaged by a slow pace.
Candy Con is a tough hard-trying horse conditioned by Assiniboia Downs leading trainer Tom Gardipy, Jr. He rarely runs a
bad race no matter where he shows up and he can be expected to give his best in the Manitoba Derby.
CANDY CON : 15-1Probable odds
Gardipy has won the training title at Assiniboia Downs five times and he often wins when least expected. Up against the
race-fit stables of Jerry Gourneau and Juan Pablo Silva this season, he somehow managed to get his horses fit enough in
the snows of Manitoba and Saskatchewan to win 35 races and lead the standings.
Candy Con recorded his career best Beyer Speed Figure in the Harry Jeffrey and should be able to improve on that
number again in the Manitoba Derby under regular jockey Richard Mairs, especially if he gets a pace to run at. Mairs is
winning at a 20% clip and is having one of his best seasons ever at Assiniboia Downs. He currently sits second in the
standings with 29 wins, many of which have come for Gardipy, who can never be underestimated.
Like his trainer, this horse could outrun his odds.
Owners: Mike Powers
Trainer: Jerry Gourneau Jockey: Chavion Chow
EYE CLOUD3 Year Old - -Dark Bay Gelding
Eye Cloud owns the honour of having the classiest company lines in the 2019 Manitoba Derby field, and 2018 Assiniboia
Downs leading trainer Jerry Gourneau must now help him find that class.
Eye Cloud won his first ever lifetime start in a Maiden Special Weight race at Evangeline Downs in Louisiana and went on to win
the second race of his career at Delta Downs, also in Louisiana. He then travelled to Sunland Park in New Mexico, where he
met monsters in the $100,000 Riley Allison Derby, the $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby and the $800,000 Sunland Derby-G2.
Surprise package.
Pedigree: Point of Entry - Last Fever by Storm Cat
EYE CLOUD 20-1Probable odds:
Bred in Kentucky by Steve DeMaiolo & Beechwood Racing Stable LLC
The Sunland Derby was run at the same distance as the Manitoba Derby, 1 1/8-miles, and the field included not only El Camino
Real Derby winner Anothertwistafate but also Affirmed Stakes-G3 winner and Haskell Invitational Stakes-G1 runner-up Mucho
Gusto. Finishing fifth in that tough 9-horse field was an accomplishment in itself, but Eye Cloud also recorded his lifetime best
Beyer Speed Figure of 74 in the race.
After one race at Lone Star Park in Texas in June, owner Mike Powers sent Eye Cloud to Assiniboia Downs to see if Gourneau
could find the key to his horse. Gourneau has been turning the careers of horses around for decades, and many of them have
been longshots. He's also finished second in the Manitoba Derby twice, with Big Blue Caboose in 2011 and Witt Six in 2015.
Eye Cloud has run three times at Assiniboia Downs, with his most recent start being a fourth-place finish in the Harry Jeffrey
Stakes. He's been gelded since then.
FLINCH
Owners: M J Racing
Trainer: Juan Pablo Silva Jockey: Alex Cruz
3 Year Old - -Dark Bay Gelding
Bred in Florida by Maria M. Haire
Silva said he got lucky, but we're guessing it was more than that. He used the most valuable skill a horse trainer can
possess – imagination -- to bring out the best in Debonair Joe, training him without shoes before the Malibu Stakes to
help Julie Krone become the first female jockey in history to win a Grade 1 race at a California track.
Flinch may be a tougher case, but he has shown flashes of talent. The son of Breeders’ Cup Classic-G1 winner Fort Larned
began his career in Maiden Special Weight races at Indiana Downs before moving to maiden claiming races in Tampa Bay,
Florida. Finding no success there, he shipped to Assiniboia Downs and after two second place finishes, he romped home
on top by 10 ¼-lengths in a $5,000 maiden claiming race going 7 ½-furlongs. Silva claimed Flinch for $5,000 in his next
start, and has run him back once, finishing third going a mile. Horses often improve in their second starts for this hot
stable.
Longshot flyer.
There's a good chance Flinch will be the longest shot on the board when the horses load into the gate for the 71
Manitoba Derby, but trainer Juan Pablo Silva isn't worried, he's pulled off major upsets in races even bigger than this.
st
Currently battling for the leading trainer title at Assiniboia Downs with 33 wins, 17 years ago Silva claimed a horse named
Debonair Joe for $12,500 at Fairplex and went on to post shocking victories in both the Vernon O. Underwood Stakes-G3
at 53-1 and the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita at 22-1.

Trainer play.
Lifesbeengoodsofar has big horseshoes to fill, as Plentiful has won seven stakes to date and he's not done yet, but you can never
count Duncan out. Lifesbeengoodsofar has run three times at Assiniboia Downs since being claimed for owners Garth Grieder and
Violetta Adamczyk, and he's already returned a good portion of his investment with a win in the Royal Frolic Overnight Stakes.
Pedigree: Ministers Wild - Life Is a Stone by Globalize
Trainer Murray Duncan has made a second career out of claiming horses at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas and winning stakes with
them at Assiniboia Downs. Lifesbeengoodsofar is his latest project.
In his most recent start, the son of Golden State Mile Stakes winner Ministers Wild Cat finished second with a wide rally in the
Golden Boy Stakes. He hasn't made a local start at over six furlongs yet, and he might just love getting to stretch his legs in the
longer Manitoba Derby. His dam, Life Is a Stone, is a stakes-placed full sister to Life Is a Joy, who won the one-mile Charlie Palmer
Stakes. And Lifesbeengoodsofar did break his maiden going a mile.
This horse's name seems perfectly fitting for the 78-year-old Duncan, who may not be the oldest trainer on the grounds but might
just be the sharpest. Horses Duncan has claimed at Oaklawn Park that have gone on to become stakes winners and champions
locally include C J's Flair, Pleasant Closing, Lady Warrior, Go Go Lolo and of course Plentiful, who was claimed for $15,000 and
went on to win the 2017 Manitoba Derby five starts later. And he had to outrun Manitoba-bred super mare Escape Clause to do it.
LIFESBEENGOODSOFAR 6-1Probable odds:
MOSCOW MINISTER3 Year Old - -Dark Bay Colt
Owner: John Ganas
Trainer: Steven Gaskin Jockey: Christopher Husbands
Currently fourth in the trainer standings and winning at a 20% clip, Gaskin has already proven his ability to get the most
out of his horses and turn them into overachievers. If he can do the same with Moscow Minister, he could be right there
at the wire.
Pedigree: Power Broker - Busy Listening by DehereBred in Kentucky by E.H. Beau Lane III
Trained by up-and-coming fourth-year trainer Steve Gaskin, Moscow Minster broke his maiden for a $50,000 tag at
Churchill Downs going 1 1/16-miles in the mud in his second lifetime start as a 2-year-old. Unsuccessful forays to
Gulfstream Park, Tampa Bay and Turfway Park brought him back to Keeneland in Kentucky, where he won a $20,000
claiming race going 1 1/8-miles and recorded his lifetime best Beyer Speed Figure of 75. Two starts later he won again for
a $20,000 tag going 1 1/16-miles at Churchill Downs.
After finishing out of the money in his next start, Moscow Minister was purchased by Ganas with the hope that Gaskin
could take this horse to the next level, and this owner-trainer partnership has done it before. Last year Ganas claimed
Zack Ridge Road at Woodbine for $20,000 and Gaskin conditioned the new purchase to win both the Balooga Bull and
Golden Boy Stakes at Assiniboia Downs before finishing sixth in the Manitoba Derby. The team also won the Manitoba
Mile and Gold Cup here last year with Media Melee.
Don't underestimate.
MOSCOW MINISTER 3-1Probable odds:
A recent private purchase out of Kentucky by local restauranteur John Ganas, Moscow Minister is another in this year's
competitive Manitoba Derby field that looks like he will get better as he goes further. And he's already won at the Derby
distance of 1 1/8-miles.
3 Year Old - -Dark Bay Gelding

OIL MONEY
Pedigree: J P’s Gusto - Cryptocandiac by Candy Ride (ARG)
Robertino Diodoro won the Manitoba Derby in 2016 with Inside Straight and in 2018 with Sky Promise. One of horse
racing's elite trainers, Diodoro finished 3 overall in North America by number of wins last year with 255, and he's on
track to do similar this year. He currently ranks third among all North American trainers with 146 wins.
rd
OIL MONEY 5-2Probable odds:
Bred in Florida by Brent & Crystal Fernung, Mike Sebastian Sr., Daniel Flanigan & Eugene P. Cahalan
Oil Money broke his maiden in a $30,000 claiming race at Turf Paradise last year and followed that victory up with a win
in the $75,000 Zia Park Juvenile Stakes. He then finished out of the money in the Lost in The Fog Juvenile Stakes at Turf
Paradise before winning his first start as a 3-year-old in an allowance race at the same track.
Oil Money has speed to burn. The 3-year-old son of Del Mar Futurity-G1 winner J P's Gusto has never run further than
6 ½-furlongs, but he's already a double stakes winner and he'll be looking for a hat trick on the stretch out in the
Manitoba Derby. As will his trainer.
After a freshening, Oil Money finished out of the money against tough horses in the $150,000 Bachelor Stakes at
Oaklawn Park. He then ventured north to Assiniboia Downs in an effort to get back on the winning track and didn't
disappoint. Setting sizzling fractions of 22.20 and 44.40, Oil Money ran the locals off their feet in the Golden Boy Stakes
and coasted home a 6 ½-length winner under last year's co-leading rider here Prayven Badrie.
The one to catch.
3 Year Old - -Bay Gelding
Owner: Rick Wiest, Clayton Wiest and Charlie Butz
Trainer: Robertino Diodoro Jockey: Antonio Whitehall
ROCKNROLL ROCKET
Pedigree and potential.
ROCKNROLL ROCKET 10-1Probable odds:
Rocknroll Rocket is owned by the partnership of Charlie Butz and Clayton and Rick Wiest, the latter two of which were partners
on last year's Manitoba Derby winner Sky Promise, who went on to win both the Canadian Derby-G3 and the B.C. Derby-G3.
Not only is Diodoro third among all North American trainers with 146 victories, he's also won the Manitoba Derby twice
before, in 2016 and 2018. And not only did he win the Manitoba Derby last year, he also had two other horses in the race that
finished second and fourth.
Rocknroll Rocket began his career at Churchill Downs in a Maiden Special Weight race against the bluebloods of the breed but
was claimed three starts later by Diodoro for $50,000 at Fair Grounds in Louisiana. Since then, Rocknroll Rocket has run six
times and never finished worse than third. His last four starts have all been in Maiden Special Weight company at Canterbury
Park in Minnesota, and two starts back he missed by only a head going seven furlongs in his first ever turf start.
Pedigree: Curlin - Rocket Twentyone by Indian Charlie
A son of multimillionaire Breeders' Cup Classic-G1 winner Curlin, Rocknroll Rocket is out of Arlington Washington Lassie-G3
winner Rocket Twentyone, who is a daughter of Santa Anita Derby-G1 winner and Kentucky Derby-G1 third-place finisher
Indian Charlie. Based on pedigree alone, it's clear why Diodoro thought this horse might improve with experience.
Rocknroll Rocket is still a maiden, but his pedigree and race record are suited perfectly for the Manitoba Derby distance and his
trainer, Robertino Diodoro, is one of the best in the business.
