Energy Efficiency in Sub-Saharan Africa –
Situation
• The potential for energy and energy cost savings in Sub-Saharan
industries is huge – according to UNIDO between 25 and 40%
• Installed machinery is often outdated, processes might run effectively
but often not efficiently
• Manufacturers have to deal with frequent blackouts, shortage of fossil fuels and depend on self-generation with diesel, oil or gas
generators
• Energy plays a much greater role in Sub Saharan African business
expenses than in Europe: often energy costs range between 20 to 40% of production costs
05.05.2017 Company-Presentation – GFA Consulting Group GmbH 14
• Decreased energy consumption (and GHG) and energy costs
• Growing competitiveness (increased productivity) within domestic economy
as well as on international markets
• Higher independence from fossil fuel for self-generation
• Increased skilled labor in efficient technologies and processes
• Business development: Released capital can be utilized for expanding the
business or invested into R&D
• Prices could be lowered, if cost reduction is passed through to consumers
• Employment on the supply side: Demand for energy service providers rises
• Safety of employment in the industry: Less cutbacks of working shifts
• Capital investments: Investment-related energy efficiency measures
require debt financing, thus could involve national financial sectors
Energy Efficiency in Sub-Saharan Africa –
Benefits
05.05.2017 Company-Presentation – GFA Consulting Group GmbH 15
• Awareness on the potential of energy efficiency is relatively low among
Sub-Saharan manufacturers
• Skills for analyzing energy performance, developing energy management
systems, and implementing energy efficiency measures are rather rare
• Low capital availability existing for investment-related energy efficiency
measures among most Sub-Saharan manufacturers
• Energy policies and promotional schemes usually prioritize the expansion
of the installed generation capacity instead of promoting energy efficiency
• Low quality of equipment (second hand, under-developed quality
infrastructure, missing efficiency labels) hinder wide-spread use of EE and
RE technology

Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, on behalf of the BMZ with
co-financing by the EU
• The programme is set up to promote conditions for the application
of and investment in Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Rural Electrification
• Programme period 2013 to 2018
• Energy management project period July 2015 to June 2017
05/05/2017 Company-Presentation – GFA Consulting Group GmbH 18

Energy Audit Revealed Potential Energy
Savings of 41% of Total Energy Costs
Major Recommendations
• Eliminate compressed air and steam leakages
• Return steam condensate to boiler feed water tank and make use
of flash steam
• Install automated voltage regulation (AVR) to reduce generator
running time
• Retrofit the old lighting system to energy saving lights/LED
Results
• Installation of an 1 MVA AVR (USD 31,563 investment) led to
electricity cost savings of USD 9,469 per month and CO2-
emissions by 12.3 tons per month
• Retrofitting the lights at Feed Mill 1 by replacing 132 light-bulbs of
5.3 kW with 24 energy saving CFLs of 2.5kW results in annual cost
saving of USD 2,670 with 1.3 months payback time
• In total, the energy audit revealed potential energy savings of 19%
of total consumption and 41% of total energy costs
• More recommended measures are under implementation
