PRACTITIONERORIENTATION

Kim Pakney, CPCS, CPMSM

Manager, Medical Staff Services Dept. Providence Alaska Medical Center

Past AKAMSP President 2000 & 2004

NAMSS Board, Director-at-Large 2011-2013

How to get started…

Consider what they need to know

• About your facility

• About providing clinical care at your facility

• Federal & State Requirements

• Specifics about practicing in your state

• Internal Departments that have an important message

How much time will you need?

• Originally we did a 4 hour orientation and 4 hours of computer training.

• Then we moved to 5 hours for orientation as more speakers came forward with important messages.

• Then 6 hours…

• Now we are at 7 hours for orientation, with computer training remaining an additional 4 hours.

What to consider…

• Administration Buy-In

• What happens if orientation isn’t done?

• We say must do within 30 days or lose privileges until completed.

• Tracking attendance.

CME for Attending

We award Cat. 1 CME for attending orientation:

Need an evaluation from each participant

For the physicians you need the new C11 evaluation several months after the orientation.

Tips for success…

• Start on schedule…

• Stick to the schedule…

• Require the A Team…

• Keep the information pertinent and current…

• If people no show, give a reminder, if it happens again, they lose their time…

What do the attendees think??

It’s a LOVE/HATE Relationship –

• Some love it…

• Some appreciate it after the fact…

• Some think parts of it are important and parts of it are not…

• Some think we have wasted their time…

THE END!
