What We Mean by Power Electronics?
Uses semiconductor devices as switches for power
conversion from one type of source to another.
Applies control techniques in order to obtain the desired
input and output requirements.
We can say that Power Electronics combine Power,
Electronics and Control.
Thus we can define Power Electronics as the applications
of solid-state electronics for the control and conversion of
electric power. Rashid M. (2001)

from electric utility, 1 or 3 phase, 50 or 60 Hz: ac input
from dc supply/battery: dc input
from previous converter output: ac/dc input
Power Output: to load (load can be of R or L or R-L nature)
output parameters: dc/ac voltage, dc/ac current, frequency & number
of phase
Power Converter Core : Using
BJT/ MOSFET/ SCR/ GTO/ IGBT/ MCT as switch,
Diode, L and C as energy manipulators
Because converter core used switches, the electronic circuits are
also called Switch-mode Power Supplies

As electronic switching, there is two conditions, ie. ON and OFF
