Art of the Earth: the specific content of the initiative
Location – Paradela do Rio (Montalegre), on the North of Portugal
Sectors – Ceramics Characteristics – Family enterprise The history – started in the 80’s,

The environmental issues
This couple had special concerns about the environment impacts and sustainable development
They use recycled clay and use some natural elements with the clay to get different colors and textures, such as earth and spontaneous plants (gorse, broom, heather, etc.)
They try to reuse all waste in future works
They produce unique pieces, in a small-scale production
The social issues
Their work is very intuitive and very personal, but they pass their knowledge and techniques by training and workshops.
All of their work have an aesthetic value, Maria’s work is based in feelings, such love, care and kindness. José’s work is an ironic work, based on the problems of the actual society, their distresses and anxieties.
This couple participates in several craft fairs, in our country and in other countries. That´s a way they can show and promote their work.
They have a particular way of live and change the way that people see the ceramics work.
The knowledge and techniques used were learned by themselves, by trial and experimentation
They work with others partners and try to use new materials and techniques
They are indicated by Craft National Association as an example of creativity and good work.
Most of their work is sold to outside people but they “bring” to this small village many people to visit their gallery and to buy their pieces, so indirectly they had a contribution for the local economy.

Handicraft center o f Melgaço: the specific content of the initiative
Location – Prado, Melgaço, almost on the Spanish border. It is an atelier of handicrafts in a rural area in a rustic house, with not only the marketing but also the development of local craft
Sectors – Textiles. Weaving of linen, weaving in wool (blankets and carpets). The embroidery on clothes, towels, etc.
Characteristics – Family enterprise
The history – started in the 80’s, to recover the traditional craft of the region
Tradition – Recover the techniques and traditional craft
The entrepreneurs – Rosa Maria Gonçalves
The environmental issues
Located in Peneda Gerês National Park, environmental concerns are always patent in the way she works
She produces small quantities, so the environmental impact is low
Collection of all the technical phases of the lifecycle of linen (seed, harvesting, weaving)
The social issues
She works with disabled people, she gives training to these people
Some products are for daily use but the majority are aesthetic products
Adere-pg promote some training in this center
The successive training increase the interest in this type of craft
Contribution to the development of a sustainable economy: areas of greatest relevance
They maintaining the traditional crafts of the region, but giving some innovation that suit the present days.
The embroidery on clothes, towels, blankets are beautiful and diverse, some sober, others more smug. These pieces are made on old linen and the drawings figure are popular or traditional, with the same tone or more colorful.
The future is unstable

Location – Covide, Terras de Bouro (in the heart of the Peneda Gerês National Park)
Sectors – Textiles and traditional tea and jams
Characteristics – Private association
The history – was created as a result of the development work and handicraft conservation started by the Covide Social and Parochial Centre, 1984, with four artisans.
Tradition – The artisans had the know-how of traditional handicraft
The entrepreneurs – 4 local artisans
Located in Peneda Gerês National Park, environmental concerns are always patent in the way they work
The quantities that they produce don’t have a significant impact in the environmental
Collection of all the technical phases of the lifecycle of linen (seed, harvesting, weaving)
The environmental issues
They created several jobs, in work fields, textiles, jams and tea manufactory, etc. (not discriminating against men or women)
It was a very ambitious undertaking but of enormous benefit to the local and neighboring communities
Adere-pg promote several training in this association and they have their own training for member-artisans of the Association.
They have a big support from the municipality

The social issues
With the increase in production other requirements arose, namely the need for a shop for direct sales of handicraft products. They created a mini-shop for direct sale of craft products
Acquisition of traditional equipment; looms and all their accessories, a linen mill and equipment for wool spinning.
Many projects and training courses carried out by the white stones Association.
Planting and processing of flax, cultivating of herbs, aromatic, medicinal and condimentary plants
Participation of exchange visits with artisans from other areas

José Moscoso Office: The specific content of the initiative
Location – Arcos de Valdevez
Sectors – Wood
Characteristics – Family enterprise
The history – started professionally since 1987. He give life to miniatures that reflect the life of an ancestral community, such as traditional granaries
Tradition - Innovate and create artifacts that reflect the everyday lives in the Alto Minho region.

Location – Ponte da Barca Sectors – Textiles (embroidery) Characteristics – Not profit association The history – started in 1997 with the
support of the “Olhar Social” (social service) to help unemployed people and trained them in traditional craft to get their own salary
Tradition – keep the traditional of the region (valentines scarves)
The entrepreneurs – 14 women’s

The quantities that they produce don’t have a significant impact in the environmental
The social issues
This Association born with a social purpose, to help unemployed people
Adere-pg promote several training in this association
Training of member-artisans of the Association.
They have a big support from the municipality
Exchange of experiences - training for young people from several countries (specially Italian girls)
Most of the products are aesthetic
Contribution to the development of a sustainable economy: areas of greatest relevance
They have a space to work with a shop and the exhibition of all the work
They have a cooperative network – they make shifts to open the shop
The future is not famous but is stable
Economic and financial situation – not bad
