Picture Coding - Double Consonants and Digraphs

This drawing activity is a highly effective way of giving each child ownership of the letter shape, of its sound, and its embedded character.

The following pages are large plain letters. Make copies for the children to picture code. The support of having the letter shape provided for them at first helps build their confidence for drawing. Provide time for picture coding while sitting quietly making the letter sound. Children enjoy it because they are in effect giving the plain letters life!

Provide a model to encourage children who lack confidence in their drawing.
