Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

Objective: Students will classify matter by physical and chemical properties and identify changes in matter.

Matter is EVERYWHERE and is found in different forms as solids, liquids and gases.

When we examine a substance, we are interested in its properties. A property is

something about a substance that can help to define it.

Properties can be

both physical and

chemical.

Properties of matter are both

PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Physical properties are thing about matter that can be observed without changing the substance into a different substance. There are many different physical properties that can be observed.

Examples of Physical Properties

Color – Gold

GOLD

Au

Density- 19.32 g/cm3

Metal- STATE (solid, liquid or gas)

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Boiling point- 2807 ° F

Melting point- 1947° F

GOLD

Malleable- Bendable-forms into thin sheet

GOLD

Ductile- stretched into wire

Conductivity- Conducts heat and electricity

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Soluble: to dissolve

(without fizzing or bubbling!)

Examples of Physical Changes

When a physical change occurs, the chemical composition of that substance DOES NOT CHANGE?

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Chemical properties are characteristics of a substance that are observed when it REACTS or changes

to produce different

substances.

Iron + Oxygen = Rust

4Fe + 3O2 = 2Fe2O3

Examples of Chemical Properties

OXYGEN

REACTION TO ……

Heat Flammability

When matter undergoes a CHEMICAL CHANGE the atoms in the original substance are rearranged and produce

new substances that

are structurally different

than the original matter.

Iron + Oxygen = Rust

4Fe + 3O2 = 2Fe2O3

Signs that matter is undergoing

a chemical change:

FIZZING and BUBBLING

Giving off HEAT/SMOKE

Color CHANGE

• Smell Change

When matter undergoes a CHEMICAL CHANGE, the atoms in the original substance are rearranged and produce new substances that are structurally different than the original matter.

WARM-UP

Directions: *Number your paper from 1 to 10. *For each item, label it as a physical property (P) or a chemical property (C).
